C's Make Offer On Mutumbo
Houston Chronicle reports that the Celtics have made an offer:
I still think Dikembe Mutombo will sign. I was wrong this morning when I told Matt that the Rockets have offered $1.83 million. I got that figure from someone assuming that number in a conversation about the Rockets' luxury tax situation. For now, they have offered $1.2, the veteran's minimum. If they have to, they will have a tough decision to make about going to the $1.83 figure. Also, I said the Celtics were very interested, but had not made an offer. That was true at the time, but they have since made their offer, also the veteran's minimum. I'm hearing there is a third team showing interest.

I think our chances at Mutombo are at 20% .. someone at his age wouldnt want to uproot his family for the same amount of money, he seems comfortable there ..
They should be looking to Europe in my opinion..

I heard thought I read somewhere that we was leaning towards Houston so that he wouldn’t have to relocate his family again..? Let’s hope he’s willing to sacrifice for a better chance to win.

As much as I would like for him to come here I have feeling that he won’t. I remember watching something on TV about Mutombo a few months back and he said he was very taken to being a mentor to Yao. He was really happy in seeing how his game has grown. I also recall reading an article online not too long back (sorry cannot recall where it was) that it was Olajuwon that was talking him into playing another year. May mean nothing but I have a gut feeling that he isn’t coming to Boston.
If we’re not gonna outbid the Rockets we could at least offer to let him start (and by start I mean let him play the opening five minutes and then sit him til the 3rd of 4th quarter. I like Perk, but if there was another player last season who picked his first foul up in the opening minute of the game more than Perk I’m not aware of him.

Found the article I was referring to above. From ESPN, http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2882038
Trying to put myself in Mutombo’s shoes, I think that he could convince himself that with McGrady, Yao, and Francis, along with solid contributors in Battier, Bonz, and Mike James, that he has just as much of a chance winning it all there as here. Sadly to say, I think he is right. We will be great in the East, but only a Celtic fan could make the statement we are definitely better than them. They do lack team chemistry though. Players like Francis and Wells don’t help that.
I hope he convinces himself of this because I don’t think he has anything left…
Based on seeing both Motumbo and PJ Brown play last year (about a dozen times each on League Pass), I’d rather have Motumbo. The guy is still a productive rebounder and solid defender. Brown didn’t look anyhting like the defender he once was. I’d rather them make a better offer than Houston to entice Motumbo over rather than throw the money at Brown. I also agree that the Cs should target Webber as well and try to get 2 of the 3. The team would be very old, but incredibly experienced and suddenly deep.
I think he’d have a better chance of winning with us. Remember Houston is fighting Western conference teams in the playoffs. Houston might be as good as us now but we are in the weaker conference.

They should also go after Anthony Johnson with a second draft pick and cash considerations.. he is easily a buy low candidate whose value was hurt with a strange Dallas tenure.Elsewhere ive seen him he has been solid solid solid.

Who believes anything a player says about where he wants to play? It’s all lip service – with the intent of not making ANYONE mad. Mutumbo might not switch from Houston for a tiny amount of money, but for any decent offer, I’ll be he’ll come. He is on the Last Roundup and I’m sure he knows that. Plus I would presume he would higher in the playoffs here then in the west and that’s extra cash too. Mutumbo is a very smart individual and will factor all this in.

Honestly how much left can Dikembe have in the tank? I know that he was surprisingly productive last year, but to expect or hope that he would be able to repeat it is a big gamble. Same with PJ Brown. He’s what 37, 38? Do you really think its a wise bet to count on these guys 1) staying healthy and 2) still be productive?
