Old Friends

ESPN:
In the last 20 months, McHale has made two trades with former teammate and good buddy Danny Ainge to bring nine Celtics to his Wolves, and parted with the two most popular players in franchise history in the process.
In January 2006, McHale traded fan favorite Wally Szczerbiak, Michael Olowokandi and a No. 1 pick to Boston for Ricky Davis, Mark Blount, Justin Reed and Marcus Banks.
Then came the big move last week, when McHale pulled the trigger on a blockbuster that sent All-Star Kevin Garnett to the Celtics for Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and two No. 1 picks.

really sad to see them leave….
am worried about how the MINNESOTA crowd would warm up to Mchale’s move though….
it is much easier for us bottom dwellers (used to be..excuse me) to get a boost from KG’s addition…and deal with the changes..but am sure the timberwolves feel differently about the whole situation
That picture is surreal…but it’s good to know that none of those players will ever match the careers of pierce or garnett. I’d say Jefferson has a shot at surpassing ray allen by the time he is done, but even that could be a stretch. There is no question we made the right move. By the way, when did a 3-4 year window of winning a title become a bad thing? Seems that is the consensus around the country, and it makes no sense to me. Franchises build for years to get that type of opportunity, and some never do. Ainge is a lock for GM of the year and we are a lock to facing the Spurs in the finals this year. For once everyone must bow down and praise Ainge. There is only one thing that scares me about this team, and his name is Doc Rivers. He now has his chance to prove me and everyone else in Boston wrong.

This picture shows something interesting that I saw at every Celtics game I went to in person. The rap against Gomes is that he’s an undersized PF. Meanwhile, everyone calls Al Jefferson Big Al. Well, take a look at the photo. Al has maybe an inch on Gomes.
It’s not just the angle, either. Al is not a very tall guy. I used to say this all the time when people talked about him playing center. I’m not saying he CAN’T play center; but he is only about 6-8. I thought he did it quite well last year. But a more accurate nickname would be not-very-big Al.
Break my heart.
I would have been very happy watching those guys over the next ten years.
I am praying about injuries and Doc.
I cannot believe people write off Gerald at 21 years of age and straight out of high school. Roy, a scrub??? Maybe in three years time you can look back and say “told you so”, or maybe …………..
Cheers
Aussie
This press conference seemed like a wake. Pretty insulting to the players to constantly be given such low expectations. Kevin should have set a better tone, or Randy should have. Instead, the tone they set was one of losing, losing, and losing.
Interesting that Al didn’t answer the question about extending his contract in Minnesota.
Sad to see Al and Gomes go. Our team is way better now, but I wonder what would have happened if we traded Theo, Green, and Bassy what we could have gotten back.
Heres my interpretation of the picture:
Theo is trying to figure out if the other four used to be on his old team
Al, Gerald, and Ryan are like get me the F outta here, I dont want to go back to Blount
Bassy is sepreated from the group hoping no one fines his gun under that jersey, oh wait its his girl friends.
Jefferson goes from being the most popular player in Boston and the future of the franchise to being that guy we traded KG for in Minnesota.
He deserves better. :’(

That actually hurt for a second. I felt much better once I went over photos from the KG press conference.
that’s exactly how i felt. i watched this press conference and felt sorry for gerald and al, it really looked as if they didn’t wanna be there. ryan looked professional as always. telfair looked happy though (screw him) and theo didn’t care.
saw the press conference thru NBA.com…I wouldnt say Al and Gerald looked “depressed” in this presser, at TIMES they looked kind of down, but there were also a couple times they joked around with each other, and Mchale needled Gerald about improving his ball handling…all in all though, it was a STARK contrast to the Celtics press conf., and it did have a much flatter, dour tone to it…kind of sad, cuz I LOVED Big Al, and liked Gomes and Green…Telfair to me is no loss…im sure the Garden will be rockin when these guys roll into town that one game this year..

Here is how Wolves fans are feeling about the trade:

Can’t dwell on what would have, or could have been. We are the Celtics with PP, Ray Allen and KG. We are going to be extremely good for the next 3-5 years, no doubt. The three guys we’re all pining over in this photo may never amount to squat, or may end up all stars. The reality is that there is no reason to dwell. It’s not like we gave them up for a losing squad. There’s no reason to be depressed. This is not like JJ or Chauncy. We gave those guys up for nothing. We are now going to be serious contenders for a title. Enjoy it!
