C's Call Reggie Miller

ESPN Reports:

ReggieSince his playing days ended he has worked as a television analyst for TNT.

Miller was all set to continue that job when Celtics general manager Danny Ainge and coach Doc Rivers asked him to think about joining their revamped team in a reserve role, playing about 15 minutes per game.

Miller said he is calling friends and peers, seeking their advice and listening to their feedback before he makes his decision. He still plays recreationally, but must determine if he wants to go through the physical and mental grind of an 82-game season. He also wonders how his body would respond to the intensive training it would take to get him back to NBA shape.

He would be a great addition, even at his age.

Your not exactly exactly asking him to come in and play 15-20min a game.

He would be coming in for 5-10 min a game and compared to what we currently have for a bench, that’s not a bad idea.

Just think about the arsenol he would bring to this team when say Paul or Allen are sitting, you still have an offensive weapon coming off the bench.

The problem as many of us have mentioned is “Defense”

Even if Reggie broke down by game 82, you have to like the fact that having him, would have kept Pierce and Ray’s minutes down some and they’d be fresher for the playoffs (when we need them healthy and fresh)

Wow, that was unexpected. The guy can still make shots, but I feel like our needs are more at PG and C. We have a ton of wing players. This probably means either Wallace or Manuels gets cut. I think Manuels is a goner.

Well, I think I’m an odd ball in that I’ve always loved Reggie Miller. I’ve lost track—how many spots are now open. When I went thru the list in my head, I came up with 12 players under contract, counting House and Pollard but not Oliwikandi (I think they will wait on Motumbo before doing anything with Kandi).

That leaves 3 spots open. I wouldn’t mind at all using one of them on Miller, if he believes he can get in shape, and the other 2 on Motumbo and … well, I’m stuck for PGs. Maybe the Sarunis character? I’m skeptical of him. 2 teams in 2 years, and neither seemed the least bit thrilled by him.

Perk, I’m not sure if you were serious or joking about Malone, but I bet if he was motivated to get in shape, he could outplay those guys.

by Cousin It on Aug 8, 2007 12:46 PM EDT reply actions

Miller looked great in his last NBA season so he must have some burn left in him. I think this would be a great move to play him with our reserve unit consisting of great defenders in Scal,Wallace,Pollard, and Allen. Who cares if he can’t play D when Scott Pollard and Scal are locking down the paint! (I really mean that, Scal is the 2nd best defender on our team behind Garnett)

by FatoineLover on Aug 8, 2007 12:47 PM EDT reply actions

Sign him up, he and Rondo can play HORSE before and after every game/practice.

by docextension on Aug 8, 2007 12:48 PM EDT reply actions

I also can’t wait for the first time that he kicks his defender and gets to shoot 3 free throws for the “Foul”. That used to really make me mad when he did it to our team, but as a Celtic I will enjoy it.

I’m with Jeff here…I despised him and don’t really want him on the team. I’m surprised how many people are in favor of this potentially becoming a reality which it most definitely will not. But what the hell it made an otherwise boring Weds. a little bit more interesting.

by lovethecees on Aug 8, 2007 12:54 PM EDT reply actions

Hmm, this makes me think that Tony Allen might not be ready in November.

Miller doesn’t play anywhere near the defense that TA does, but scoring wise, if he can still make it up the court without crumbling to dust it would be an adequate replacement for Mr. SAL-MON. A confident veteran who won’t panic in any situation, eh…I suppose so. And when TA is healthy, it would mean that both Paul and Ray could come off the court at the same time.

I couldn’t be any happier to be a Celtics fan right now. Gone are the days where I had to convince myself that some randomn 2nd round pick or an undrafted free agent was the answer to this team. Long gone are the days of Chris Herren and Doug Overton. These are the days of Reggie Miller, Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Scott Pollard.

Holy ****, this came out of nowhere.

Although, I’d love to see how some team would try to defend, Rondo, Ray, Miller, Pierce, and KG. That would be fun.

And if this does happen, TNT better get on the phones to find some color analysts.

by MBurke15 on Aug 8, 2007 1:24 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t understand how anyone could not like this move. I was never a fan of his act, but it’s not like he’s completely out of control ala Stephen Jackson or Ron Artest. And of course you have to respect what he accomplished as a player. Just a few days ago everyone was complaining that the Celtics would be relying on a bunch of second round picks to fill out their bench. Eddie House and Scot Pollard were decent, if unspectacular pickups that helped rectify the situation. Miller would absolutely fill a need – scoring off the bench. And once again, you get another guy who’s been through playoff wars. In a limited role he could help, it’s just a question of whether his body is up to it.

I think the Celtics have multiple reasons.
1. It will sell more tickets home and away.
2. They have a better chance of winning with
a veteran on the floor for 15 minutes a game in
crunch time and in the playoffs vs a role
player or rookie at the end of the game.
3. If Paul or Ray are ill or have foul trouble they
have another shooter to go to.
4. He wants to win a championship might as well
   take the opportunity.
5. He is great foul shooter and this will give
them 4 stars to shoot the ball to win the
   game.
6. Defensively they will play zone when they have
   to.
7. He will Boston’s designated shooter or pinch
shooter. Similar to pinch hitter in baseball.
Dave Bing and Pete Maravich ended there careers
with us. They were not 42 but life is different
   now.
I remember when Bird and Maravich played together for 1 year it was great to watch.
8. We might as well have 4 future Hall of famers
at once on our team.
9. I could make it 10 reasons but hopefully 10
will be he makes the right decision for all.

Wouldn’t you love to have him coming off the bench with 20 secs left in the game, we are up by two points, the opposition has to foul, and Reggie gets the in-bound pass?

How about we are down by 3 points with us owning the ball at half-court and 3 secs left in the game?

by Wilt on Aug 8, 2007 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

After spending so many years watching games close out with PP having the ball, and the rest of the opposing team guarding him, how scary for coaches would it be knowing that you would have to find a way to defend Allen, PP, Miller and KG. Any one can beat you,and you only can double one of them.

Age is only a number, sign him up!

If Doc goes to TNT in a trade for Miller, can we do this with no hit to the cap. He can be a player/coach and take Doc’s salary.

by Hondo on Aug 8, 2007 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

I like it.

As long as his body can take 10-15 minutes a game for most of the season/playoffs, then it’s a great addition. He can come in, and park out near the three point line, run some screens, etc. He won’t help on the defensive end, and we wouldn’t be able to expect much past fifteen minutes a game, but what’s the downside?

Even if he can’t contribute that much on the court, I bet he can help in the locker room and as a mentor.

Why the heck not?

I bet he outplays Eddie House, that’s for sure.

by jarobiso on Aug 8, 2007 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

Indeed, Wilt, he would be a useful sub at the ends of games. His ability to hit a big time three [should it still be there] would be a definite boon.

Also, if I remember correct, he was a fantastic free throw shooter. 88.8 percent in regular season, over 89 in the playoffs from NBA.com. Again, another role he could fill as a situational sub; if you’re up by two or three and know the other team is going to foul, you could do a hell of a lot worse than trotting out Reggie Miller and his near 90 percent free throw average. In such a situation you could go small with Allen (88), Pierce (79), Miller (88), Garnett (76) and player to be named later and you have a lineup that could ice those types of close games. That’s something to consider.

by jarobiso on Aug 8, 2007 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

If we get Reggie, expect even more nationally televised games. We’d become the team to root for, b/c of the theme of four allstars all joining forces to get that elusive ring. Pierce and Ray aren’t as well known, but the national media would definitely be all over KG and Reggie going for the ring. This should be the next Real World cast. What if 4 allstars who’ve never won a ring were put on the same team? See what happens when they…

Look at the last 4 guys we brought in, Shuttlesworth, KG, House, and Pollard. Yeah the last two arent anything special, but their vets.

So how about letting other teams worry about stopping us for a change? As Coach Tommy used to say back in the 70s, “Hey guys if you can just hold ‘em to 115, we’ll get 120.”

Wilbon – PTI said he’s seriously considering it. Who knows? You really couldn’t do much better than Reggie Miller as scoring punch off the bench.

by JHTruth on Aug 8, 2007 5:49 PM EDT reply actions

The C’s signing Reggie would be interesting, but I don’t think it would work out all that well. Let’s be extremely optomistic and say the C’s win the championship, signing Reggie would have little to do with it. I see it being very similar to Mitch Richmond’s role on the 2002 Lakers championship team, or Steve Smith’s role on the Spurs 2003 championship team, looks good on paper but that’s about it. Just check out the playoff stat lines:

Richmond (age 36) – ’02 Playoffs – 2 games played (out of 19 possible), 4 total minutes

Smith (age 33) – ’03 Playoffs – 9 games played (out of 24 possible), 66 total minutes

And Reggie would be 42!

I can see Reggie maybe in a slightly smaller role than say Michael Finley on the Spurs. I mean all he has to do is come in and hit some shots. You don’t need an all-star for that role..

by JHTruth on Aug 8, 2007 6:04 PM EDT reply actions

I’m all for it. The guy will be able to bury open jumpers into his 60’s, the question is whether he can still get himself open like he used to. Reggie was the master at using picks and moving without the ball to get open, but he is in his 40’s now and has 2 years of rust on his body.

BTW, rumor has it Oliver Miller is on a crash diet. Just sayin’…

Hey … if the Celts are recruiting retired NBA players, I would be prefer that Ainge “ressurect” old Celtics players such as Bill Russell, KC Jones, Dave Cowens and/or Havlicek for 2-3 minute stints on the court! ;-)

I believed he was a mormon, I could be wrong. When all things seem equal when trying to decide which road to travel, sometimes people feel more comfortable when they share the same ideals.

by Little D on Aug 8, 2007 6:45 PM EDT reply actions

I think that a player like Reggie Miller would not only be great for the young guys on the team to have player that defines how to create shots for their self. As well to show everyone how to move without the ball. Reggie would be perfect to have come off the bench as sixth man of course he’s 42 so the mins should not go over 15 mins unless he felt and showed he could go longer at times. I hope decides to come and get his ring or rings ha ha ha. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Little D,
Van Horn had 2 or 3 kids while still in college and never married their baby momma. Not a mormon, trust me.

But I do agree he’d be worth a call. It’s the perfect fit for him—all he would be asked to do is score some off the bench and rebound. With all the pressure off him, he could be a nice reserve.

by Cousin It on Aug 8, 2007 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

I’m 100% certain he is not. He was recruited out of California just like Andre Miller was by Majerus. Here’s one that will blow your mind though. Pollard is. I recall a story back when I was living there in SLC that while at Kansas he was debating leaving for a church mission. He didn’t go, and from what I hear he stopped being active in the mormon church. Maybe you have something Little D…

Once again though, I don’t really think that it has anything to do with it. I guess if he starts luring Shawn Bradley out of retirement then maybe you have something. He also would have insisted that Mark Madsen was part of the deal.

Any truth to the word Ainge has been seen “working out” too?

Sure… sign me up. He can sit at the end of the bench just as well as the next guy… plus he can shoot ft and probably be useful in other ways.

by phaze on Aug 8, 2007 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

Okay, I was wrong, it won’t be the last time. Let’s try this (not that it matters) but isn’t someone in ownership from the mormon faith? Was that one of the connections that Danny had in obtaining the job?

by Little D on Aug 8, 2007 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

How about the fact that he was a former Celtic star being his connection?! He had quite the impressive resume. I don’t think he needed religion to get him a foot in the door…

by EJPLAYA on Aug 8, 2007 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

If Ainge turns into George Allen and we become the Washington Redskins of the NBA, in a very bizarre way I could dig it. Sign up every NBA veteran who is ring-less and smell the hunger. Seriously.
Ryan’s right: It’s a five-point heave shot of an idea, but one so crazy it just might work.
But yes, the question about defense remains (among others).

Next up: Karl Malone.
Why the heck not?

by Big_Easy on Aug 8, 2007 8:48 PM EDT reply actions

Hey, why not get MJ while we are at it! Hell, why doesn’t Danny solve the guard problem by signing himself as a player/GM.

by Meangreen Machine on Aug 8, 2007 8:53 PM EDT reply actions

The C’s need a decent vet PG. As much as I like Miller & his killer instinct, he has A TON of miles on those wheels. HS, College and TWENTY full seasons in the NBA. That’s no joke.

TAllen & House will be decent 10-15 mpg backups.

by LuckyNumber07 on Aug 8, 2007 9:04 PM EDT reply actions

C’mon Reggie! This team is too good for you to pass up.

by Greenhorn on Aug 8, 2007 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

Neither do I. I was just trying to see if their were any mutual interests other than basketball.

by Little D on Aug 8, 2007 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

Where’s Keon Clark?

by Little D on Aug 8, 2007 10:02 PM EDT reply actions

It also would be fun to have someone telling Spike Lee where to stick it everytime we play in the Garden.

haha tru that i think thats wort paying reggie alone.

by celts34 on Aug 8, 2007 11:28 PM EDT reply actions

Considering we lost an assistant coach and have such an inexperienced bench, wouldn’t the leadership alone be worth the vet min, with each basket made a huge plus?

by steinalive on Aug 9, 2007 12:16 AM EDT reply actions

with Jeff here…I despised him and don’t really want him on the team. I’m surprised how many people are in favor of this potentially becoming a reality which it most definitely will not. But what the hell it made an otherwise boring Weds. a little bit more interesting.

Trust me on this: If the fandom thought a combinatoion of Darius Miles, Ruben Patterson, Ron Artest, Andre Blatche and Jamaal Tinsley coming off the bench would bring title #17 to Boston, they’d be clamoring for Ainge to go and get ‘em. Hey, that’s not a bad idea!
