Ryan On Reggie

Bob Ryan checks in with thoughts on Reggie Miller:

I'm not going to pooh-pooh this until I see it. I have too much respect for Reggie Miller, a very intelligent man. We know he hasn't gained so much as an ounce. He could conceivably get into very good shape. I don't know if that would be 15 minutes a game NBA shape, but it would assuredly be good shape.

He knows himself. I assume he has reason to believe he can still make an open 15-footer. The larger question would be how he gets it off. He was always the master of Getting Open. Could he still do that against defenders young enough to be his son? Doubtful, but not necessarily inconceivable, I guess.

This Reggie comeback is a long, long shot, a five-pointer at the very least. What it does tell us is how impressed Reggie Miller is with what Danny Ainge has done. He thinks it would be cool to play with Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen. He must smell a ring.

Like he said this guy is not dumb. Reggie won’t do this unless he feals he can contribute, and won’t embarrass himself. That being said, if signed he will play as an important piece off the bench and if successful throughout the season, don’t be surprised to see 20 maybe 25 min. a game come playoff time. You may see lineups in the 2nd half of the season with all 4 of these guys on the court at the same time.

I love how Bob ended his blog post:

“It’s the first week in August, and we can’t stop talking about the Celtics. The glam Pats start on Friday. The Red Sox make more news losing than most teams do winning. But the Celtics are once again in the news.”

Not sure if this helps with the two needs the team has; PG & big guy — but it sure answers points off the bench. Miller better put up the points when he’s on the floor because who ever he’s guarding will be doing the same.

Is it me, or does Ryan look like a corpse on his TV show? Get to the beach Bob.

we would really benefit from all of those b.s. foul calls that reggie miller has gotten through out his career.

and ryan looks less like a corpse, and more like an empty shell of a once great sports writer.

Seventh game NBA finals, Celts down by 2, their ball , a few seconds left on the game clock, the ball goes to Miller. He sinks the 3pt. shot. Cameras search out Danny Ainge in the crowd. Reggie, Ray, Paul, and Kevin all celebrate their first title, the C’s #17, there’s Ainge. The mastermind of it all is grinning like horseshit from ear to ear. Back here at the blog we are naming the 3ptr. the greatest, most clutch play of all time. A poll is taken over the entire world.

let’s not get too carried away with reggie miller. let’s get out the geritol. and let’s get a vet pg.

by nazzbo on Aug 8, 2007 8:31 PM EDT reply actions

If they did invent the 5-pt. shot, Reggie would definitely be able space the floor. He’d only need to nail two a game. Add in a few technical/end-of-the-game free throws and that’s 13 pts. a game right there!

Why couldn’t Ainge have vacationed in Wyoming (?) near John Stockton’s farm?

by JB_Celticsstuff on Aug 8, 2007 8:48 PM EDT reply actions

If Reggie thinks he can contribute and decides to make a comeback; probably he can still get it done to a certain degree. If he doubts it and shys away, nothing lost.

I can see Reggie playiing a sporadic 10 minutes a game, given us a lift and also in the last couple of minutes when we are up and other teams are hacking away as he hits 90% from the FT stripe.

It may not take a whole heck of a lot from the bench to win a championship anyway. Look at the Spurs with Finley, Barry, Horry. Of the 12 total games played (4 games/3 players) they had maybe only 3 good performances. Other games had Barry going scoreless, Finley shooting 1 for 5 and 1 for 7, etc.

Duncan, Parker, Ginobli were the keys to the crown.

having quality vets sign on with the celtics for the minimum is a precedent I would like to set.

If we win with miller…it could open doors to other free agent possibilities in the future.

I’m embarrassed to say I never realized Bob Ryan was an idiot until the last ten days. It’s not me, it’s him. He didn’t know stuff like this would happen?? He didn’t know having three stars on the team would bring other fa vets wanting a ring?? I mean is he a TOTAL retard?? I am sorry but I just never knew

Maybe Danny’s got a call into Karl Malone too. I think at the very least if these guys are interested in providing bench depth, we should at least determine if the ex-player may be interested in an assistant coaching position. Seems to me that Doc mentioned hiring one more guy as an assistant and maybe this assistant is the 13-15th guy on the depth chart. I could think of worse candidates than a guy like Reggie Miller or Mutumbo (even though he’s not coming). Even if Reggie was just a a practice guy and still had gas in the tank, guys like Rondo and Pruitt and other rotation players can learn a lot from a guy like him. Not sure how much money Miller would be giving up as an TNT commentator but I’m sure the C’s would sign him to a non-guaranteed contract with the promise that if he feels he can’t compete at a high level, he’s hired as an assistant. The story’s worth following.

I mean EVERYONE in the BBall universe knows we need a about 10 minutes of fill in work at every position. if Parish still thought he could go he would, no question. Ewing?? I am surprised that Camby doesn’t want in, but he can make too much money elsewhere. There is always next year

Charles Oakley has been planning a serious comeback. His wish list didn’t include the Celtics; but, that was before the KG trade. Perhaps he’d respond to an invite.

by migit on Aug 8, 2007 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

migit, just my opinion, which I’ll be the first to admit means nothing to anyone but me, but I would actually prefer a guy like Brian Skinner to Oakley. Only because Oakley has been out of it for so long and was never a great athlete to begin with, so I can’t imagine he would be able to get in any sort of playing shape. Reggie is a wiry guy. Seems like he’d have an easier time getting back into shape (and even that is a long shot at 42).

by Cousin It on Aug 9, 2007 1:19 AM EDT reply actions

Unless Ainge is contemplating using Miller at the 1 and/or 5, he’d be better off pursuing Russell and Cousy.

I love the idea of us becoming the Washington Redskins of the NBA with an Over The Hill Gang of our own; I just wish we’d sign current veterans and not retired ones. But still, if anyone can come back after a few years, I guess it’s Reggie. I just despise the guy for his snaky, foul-faking ways. But otherwise he’s classy enough. Bury the 3 and it’s all good. (Forget about defense.)

by Big_Easy on Aug 9, 2007 6:11 AM EDT reply actions

I loved watching Reggie and I hated his games against the C’s. But his last year showed his age. He could still shoot but he couldn’t get open. I doubt cutting his minutes will change that. Good for a laugh, Danny, but not good for the team.

sg..its just plain and simply not the position we should be spending
our remaining money on.
But what do i know, i thought giving away the farm and our projects
and Big Al was to much for a position we were strong at.
I would have thought we would give say gomes telfair gerald green
theo and one 1st rnd picks in picking up a vet allstar pg like a jason kidd, but not kidd someone at his level.
pg jason kidd r rondo pruitt
sg ray Allen t allen fa
sf paul pierce manuel or wallace
pf Big Al l Powe scali
ctr K perkins davis mle

4 allstars in the lineup Rondo learning from a top vet
pg and being 6th man and we still have a first to trade
or pick a player to replace allen in 3 yrs, but most of all
we would have a team for a long long time.

by perk on Aug 9, 2007 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

i do like what we have now though and really want to win it this year
so im on board now even though i was thinking in a different direction
than upgrading our finally strong pf position.
