Allen Cleared To Play
The Celtics are cautiously optimistic that guard Tony Allen will be ready once training camp begins.
Allen missed the final 48 games of last season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Celtics executive director of basketball operations Danny Ainge said today that Allen was recently cleared to play, was working out on the floor today at the team's facilities in Waltham and is expected to be ready for the upcoming training camp. The 6-foot-4, 213-pounder averaged 11.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.48 steals in 33 games last season.
"(Allen's) been cleared to play and do everything on the court," said Ainge, in a phone interview. "We've been totally conservative. It takes time to get the confidence back. You worry about significant injuries, but I'm optimistic for Tony."

I love his style of play and would love to see him back. Hope this is a good sign he’ll be ready to go sooner rather than later.

if he’s ready to go at camp, that would be a huge boost to our bench, as Posey could then use some bench minutes at PF while Allen spells the SG and ray or pierce slides to the 3 spot. Rondo/Tony/Pierce/Posey/KG; Rondo/Tony/Pierce/Posey/Perk or even House/Tony/Pierce/Posey/Perk are not bad lineups to rest the starters a few minutes right off

Tony Allen returning to form might be the difference between the second round and the finals for the Celtics. Him and Posey give the Celtics two defenisve stoppers. I know it is a long shot, can you imagine if he picks up where he left off?

Great news, the sooner he can start practicing at full speed the sooner he can get closer to his old self(hopefully). Good luck TA.

go slow with tony. basketball is a a torque pressure game on the joints. tony is also a herky jerky rather than a smooth mover. build up his confidence. after all, they traded every one else and kept him. they don’t need him now, but they will need him later, especially in the playoffs.

Just a request— whenever we mention Allen in a title line, can we more specific? A simple R or T will be fine. Thanks.

Been there, done that, had ACL replacement surgery. The knee is solid, but the reality is every time you come down on it, every time you cut lateraly, everytime your ankle threatens to roll, your mind cringes in memory of what it felt like to have that ligament torn.
The good news is once he learns to live with it, or ignore that he’ll be totally solid again!

Tony’s the X-factor for this season. In an ideal world, we’ll be able to sub in Tony and Posey whem we need an energy boost and some defensive stops. Rondo at the point, Tony at the 2, Posey at the 3, KG at the 4, Perk at the 5; once those guys get comfortable playing together, that’s a potentially dominant defensive unit.
He’s also one of the few guys left on the roster who can get out on the break. Gotta have somebody to make Tommy happy.

It’s amazing that at one point last season I thought TA might have been the worst player I have ever seen on an NBA court and could have possibly had a mental handicap. Now I can’t wait to see him on the court winning the 6th man of the year award. If he is healthy, I can see him averaging 25 minutes a night covering 3 positions and being a huge factor in this championship run.

This is a credit to the C’s medical staff and all of Tony’s hard work.

Thanks Jeff… it’s easier for us lazy folks/slow readers.

Cool. I’m hoping with this and his off-the-court problems all resolved he’ll learn to appreciate what he’s got and focus on B-Ball. Correction: I guess if he’s been cleared to play, he is focused on B-Ball. I hope he does well.

I’m with tmcdon. I still have the flash of my acl tearing and it was a long-long time ago (before MRI’s). I still haven’t seen Willis McGahey’s or Shawn Livingston’s because I think I’d throw up. I’m lucky to say nothing since hurt that much. Good luck to Tony. I agree with nazzbo, go slow. I’d be happy with Jan. Keep the faith, Tony. The repair shops nowadays are a lot better than in my day
