Oden Out For The Year
Greg Oden , the Portland Trail Blazers' No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, will miss the 2007-2008 season after knee surgery on Thursday, two league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Oden, the 7-footer out of Ohio State, underwent exploratory surgery on his right knee on Thursday in Vancouver. The extent of the damage was not immediately clear, but Oden, one of the most celebrated young players in years, will be lost for the season.
The Blazers are expected to make an announcement shortly.
Wow. Sorry Blazers fans. Better luck (rebuilding) next year.
Update: Henry Abbott reacts.

I really hope he doesn’t become an injury prone big player. Someone mentioned in another thread the other day that it’s really up to him to take the reigns from Shaq as a dominating center. With no offense to Yao Ming it’s true seeing that there’s really no other dominating centers in the game today.
Does this mean Raef will see a lot of PT?

Boom goes the dynamite.
How awful for Portland.
Getting a bad lottery pick was the best thing ever to happen to the Celtics.

Man, I feel bad for Blazers fans. Imagine how excited we would have been here had we got Oden, and how depressed had this happened. Sheesh. Sucks royally.

The basketball gods are looking out for the celtics again

This isn’t ‘suicide watch’ time for Blazers fans, Oden probably wasn’t leading them to a title this year. Provided he’s able to make a full recovery (like Amare) and this isn’t indicative of a pattern, the future in Portland is very bright. Especially if the get a higher pick this year because of it.
If it was KG, then there be some rightful bridge-jumping around here.

Celtic luck is back baby! and everyone thought we got unlucky with the draft
by Pashm on Sep 13, 2007 2:06 PM EDT reply actions
Think of our luck… The blazers look really unlucky right now because of this, so now it looks like the Sonics are the lucky ones. But because the Sonics landed Durant, it enabled them to dispose of Allen, which enabled us to get him and make getting KG possible. It seems now that what happened on may 22nd was the best outcome we could have had
Dear David Stern,
Thank you for manipulating the draft so the Celtics dropped to 5th. You’re like Santa Claus.
Sincerely,
Green Bear
Seriously, can you imagine what we’d all be like if the Celtics got Oden? There wouldn’t be enough room on the ledge! That sucks for him. I feel terrible for Oden.

I feel bad for the guy, but at least he got his guaranteed millions even if things don’t work out.

Who said that we were coursed???…. As Celtic fan I am happy that we didn’t pick up Oden in draft, but as a sport man I feel sad for him. He is a great player.
I know Oden will be very good next season.

swe1989 … interesting thought about the lottery, although I think Mayo would have to show massively improved character. The Blazers aren’t taking character chances anymore, it seems.
May be beyond us to say we dodged a bullet. Would Oden have been on that couch in Boston? We don’t know. Heck, something worse could’ve happened to him in Boston. Ask Tony Allen. ‘’Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.’’ (Ecclesiastes 9)

Portland has a good young team, and they’re still a better off with Greg Oden recovering from microfracture surgery then they would be with Corey Brewer, or whoever they would have gotten if they didn’t win the lottery. And they should get another player this year. They’re going to be fine. Last time I checked, the Sonics still wanted to leave Seattle – would rather be a Blazers fan right now

I feel bad for Port and oden both. If the C’s had won the lottery and drafted Oden, the Celtic fans would be finding a way to blame Danny for this as well.
Poor Danny, can’t win. He could fire Doc tomorrow, Sign Popovich or D’Antoni as coach the same day, trade for Jason Kidd and Tim Duncan without giving up PP, KG, or RA, and the fans would still try to lynch him . . .
Wow, that’s a shame about Oden and he’s only 21.The Blazers have had some of the worst and unluckist brakes i’ve seen. Passing on Jordan and getting Bowie ;D , Oden, the star center of the furture, out for season – to bad.

Yahoo sports reporting many teams privately had health concerns all along on Oden. I had heard many of the looks like a 40 year old jokes but this is the first I have heard about the concerns ran that deep.
As far as comparisons go, Sam Bowie analysis is ridiculous. If injuries persist, it will be more like a Bill Walton type career.
IMO if it is west of the Mississippi River, go Blazers. Play your hearts out or get another great lotto selection.
For all we know the same may be what happened in the long term with us and Bird. We got him but had to wait a year before we cashed in.

Had we gotten the #1 and took Oden, would we have to read all this nonsense about the Celtic curse for months to come? Come on people, curses are for the ignorant.
Portland, take your lemons and make lemonade the next several years.

This could actually be a blessing in disguise – if they suck again this year and get a good pick, they will have a tremendous duo of rookies next year.

This is simply horrible horrible news for the league in general and NorthWest basketball.

Bottom line, one team down (Portland) 28 to go. Best wishes on a speedy recovery next year Mr. Oden.
