Oden Out For The Year

Yahoo sports reports:

Greg Oden , the Portland Trail Blazers' No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, will miss the 2007-2008 season after knee surgery on Thursday, two league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Oden, the 7-footer out of Ohio State, underwent exploratory surgery on his right knee on Thursday in Vancouver. The extent of the damage was not immediately clear, but Oden, one of the most celebrated young players in years, will be lost for the season.

The Blazers are expected to make an announcement shortly.

Wow.  Sorry Blazers fans.  Better luck (rebuilding) next year.

Update: Henry Abbott reacts.

wow, remember whe Oden was the “safe” pick between him and Durant

you just never know

I really hope he doesn’t become an injury prone big player. Someone mentioned in another thread the other day that it’s really up to him to take the reigns from Shaq as a dominating center. With no offense to Yao Ming it’s true seeing that there’s really no other dominating centers in the game today.

two sobering words for Blazer fans… Sam Bowie

by Jeff Clark on Sep 13, 2007 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

wow…im shocked…maybe we really were lucky to fall to the 5th pick…i mean imagine where we would be if we had the first pick and took oden?

by samkicks36 on Sep 13, 2007 1:10 PM EDT reply actions

Wow I joked about this sounding like Sam Bowie when his surgery first got mentioned and now it might actually turn out that way. I think I would be on suicide watch if we had drafted him and this happened. Tough break for the Blazers.

Does this mean Raef will see a lot of PT?

Boom goes the dynamite.

How awful for Portland.

Getting a bad lottery pick was the best thing ever to happen to the Celtics.

by Stan Van GULLY on Sep 13, 2007 1:22 PM EDT reply actions

Man, I feel bad for Blazers fans. Imagine how excited we would have been here had we got Oden, and how depressed had this happened. Sheesh. Sucks royally.

by Real World on Sep 13, 2007 1:24 PM EDT reply actions

lol..two words….OJ Mayo….if the blazers end up in the lottery and get the first pick again….they could get him and they will have an even brighter future for yrs. to come

by swe1989 on Sep 13, 2007 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

Wow. That’s too bad for Oden and the Blazers. I hope he gets back 100% next year.

OUCH! Oden is Odone!

I thought this stuff only happened to the Celtics.

by Mon on Sep 13, 2007 1:36 PM EDT reply actions

Hey on the bright side for Oden, at least he can let his wrist heal fully now.

by KobraKaii on Sep 13, 2007 1:42 PM EDT reply actions

I always like Durant a bunch better but it still is bad news for Blazers and Oden.

This isn’t ‘suicide watch’ time for Blazers fans, Oden probably wasn’t leading them to a title this year. Provided he’s able to make a full recovery (like Amare) and this isn’t indicative of a pattern, the future in Portland is very bright. Especially if the get a higher pick this year because of it.

If it was KG, then there be some rightful bridge-jumping around here.

Celtic luck is back baby! and everyone thought we got unlucky with the draft

by Pashm on Sep 13, 2007 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

awful news for (us) blazer fans.

but things like this are why i wasn’t peeing my pants w/excitement when my #1 team got the #1 pick, or offing myself when my #2 team fell to #5. the draft is such a crapshoot. you just never know what you’ll end up with.

by game sink on Sep 13, 2007 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

I bet Stern is kicking himself right now that he didn’t make sure the Celtics got the #1 pick.

Haha Stern. :D

by Bankshot on Sep 13, 2007 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

Think of our luck… The blazers look really unlucky right now because of this, so now it looks like the Sonics are the lucky ones. But because the Sonics landed Durant, it enabled them to dispose of Allen, which enabled us to get him and make getting KG possible. It seems now that what happened on may 22nd was the best outcome we could have had

by WBrownTrophy on Sep 13, 2007 2:24 PM EDT reply actions

The big concern with this year’s Celtics team is that we’re old and injury prone. Well, injuries happen regardless of age. And pretty severe ones at that.

by ChiefDK on Sep 13, 2007 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

Dear David Stern,

Thank you for manipulating the draft so the Celtics dropped to 5th. You’re like Santa Claus.

Sincerely,

Green Bear

Seriously, can you imagine what we’d all be like if the Celtics got Oden? There wouldn’t be enough room on the ledge! That sucks for him. I feel terrible for Oden.

by Green Bear on Sep 13, 2007 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think injury is as big a concern as some think or it is at least no more of a concern than any other elite team. All the elite teams are veteran teams with a bunch of guys in their 30s. We are no different than any other contender. They all have the same injury concerns.

by Bankshot on Sep 13, 2007 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

I feel bad for the guy, but at least he got his guaranteed millions even if things don’t work out.

by Pashm on Sep 13, 2007 2:32 PM EDT reply actions

what a shame.

by SShoreFan on Sep 13, 2007 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

Who said that we were coursed???…. As Celtic fan I am happy that we didn’t pick up Oden in draft, but as a sport man I feel sad for him. He is a great player.

I know Oden will be very good next season.

by Fredy_7 on Sep 13, 2007 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

swe1989 … interesting thought about the lottery, although I think Mayo would have to show massively improved character. The Blazers aren’t taking character chances anymore, it seems.

May be beyond us to say we dodged a bullet. Would Oden have been on that couch in Boston? We don’t know. Heck, something worse could’ve happened to him in Boston. Ask Tony Allen. ‘’Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.’’ (Ecclesiastes 9)

by Luke Middleton on Sep 13, 2007 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

Too bad for Oden, but as swe mentions above, it might be a sort of blessing in disguise for the Blazers, who may be able to build around a core of Oden, Aldridge, Outlaw, Roy and Mayo/Rose. That is a nice group of youngsters at every position.

by Cman on Sep 13, 2007 2:49 PM EDT reply actions

Hey Master Po….theres a Slow Train Coming up around the bend. Wow..gotta feel a lil for the Blazers. Good Lord be watching over us and of course Mr Red ;)

by Ref10 on Sep 13, 2007 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

It’s a big leap to go from Oden missing a year to the Blazers getting the #1 again next year. First of all, they still have a competitive young team. And even if they do suck, that in no way guarantees a top-3 pick (see: Celtics, 2007 draft).

by Cousin It on Sep 13, 2007 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, Are we in a better position as a team or what…. I’m telling you things are looking more and more better each day for the Boston Celtics……

by The Real Large James on Sep 13, 2007 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

Oden won’t be 20 years old until January 22nd. The Blazers can wait a year. They still have Aldridge, Przybilla and Frye to play center.

Portland has a good young team, and they’re still a better off with Greg Oden recovering from microfracture surgery then they would be with Corey Brewer, or whoever they would have gotten if they didn’t win the lottery. And they should get another player this year. They’re going to be fine. Last time I checked, the Sonics still wanted to leave Seattle – would rather be a Blazers fan right now

by Cullain on Sep 13, 2007 4:44 PM EDT reply actions

I’m no Doctor…lol..but Amare seems OK and CWebb/older,not so good..my guess ,as with hips/knees etc that Micro surgery gets better each time…and the younger the patient the better

too bad, but i’m not gonna cry…

by ManUp on Sep 13, 2007 6:10 PM EDT reply actions

I feel bad for Port and oden both. If the C’s had won the lottery and drafted Oden, the Celtic fans would be finding a way to blame Danny for this as well.

Poor Danny, can’t win. He could fire Doc tomorrow, Sign Popovich or D’Antoni as coach the same day, trade for Jason Kidd and Tim Duncan without giving up PP, KG, or RA, and the fans would still try to lynch him . . .

by tmcdon on Sep 13, 2007 7:03 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, that’s a shame about Oden and he’s only 21.The Blazers have had some of the worst and unluckist brakes i’ve seen. Passing on Jordan and getting Bowie ;D , Oden, the star center of the furture, out for season – to bad.

by celticsboy746 on Sep 13, 2007 7:28 PM EDT reply actions

I feel bad for Oden but it ends there. I have no remorse for someone like Henry Abbot who questions whether a Celtics title would be considered “bought” because of a couple good trades while his team goes out and buys draft picks every year from other teams.

by Byrdman on Sep 13, 2007 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

i hope he doesn’t turn into another walton, extremely gifted with anatomical defects- small feet. no brittle bones for greg. in the long run, luck evens out. you just have to take advantage of the good luck when you get it to the max. for us, i hope it’s our turn for some good luck.

by nazzbo on Sep 13, 2007 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

Yahoo sports reporting many teams privately had health concerns all along on Oden. I had heard many of the looks like a 40 year old jokes but this is the first I have heard about the concerns ran that deep.

As far as comparisons go, Sam Bowie analysis is ridiculous. If injuries persist, it will be more like a Bill Walton type career.

IMO if it is west of the Mississippi River, go Blazers. Play your hearts out or get another great lotto selection.

For all we know the same may be what happened in the long term with us and Bird. We got him but had to wait a year before we cashed in.

by docextension on Sep 13, 2007 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

Had we gotten the #1 and took Oden, would we have to read all this nonsense about the Celtic curse for months to come? Come on people, curses are for the ignorant.

Portland, take your lemons and make lemonade the next several years.

amazing what a few months can do

by Weird Facts on Sep 14, 2007 12:12 AM EDT reply actions

This could actually be a blessing in disguise – if they suck again this year and get a good pick, they will have a tremendous duo of rookies next year.

by gileyal on Sep 14, 2007 1:14 AM EDT reply actions

This is simply horrible horrible news for the league in general and NorthWest basketball.

by havlicekstoletheball on Sep 14, 2007 3:43 AM EDT reply actions

thank god we didnt get that #1 pick.

by whales on Sep 14, 2007 9:46 AM EDT reply actions

I wish the Celtics would have tossed some money around for one of those Phoenix picks.

by Cousin It on Sep 14, 2007 11:27 AM EDT reply actions

Bottom line, one team down (Portland) 28 to go. Best wishes on a speedy recovery next year Mr. Oden.

by docextension on Sep 14, 2007 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

Cousin It,

I couldn’t agree more, but that doesn’t change the fact that for him to insinuate that our team is bought is utterly ridiculous.
