Sarunas Jasikevicius Is A Free Agent

Sarunas Jasikevicius was bought out by the Golden St. Warriors today (per RealGM).

The Golden State Warriors have requested waivers on guard Sarunas Jasikevicius after reaching a contractual buyout agreement, Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released.

"We think this was in the best interest of both parties," said Mullin. "As a competitor, Sarunas obviously would like to have an opportunity to play a significant role on a team. This could potentially open up other avenues that will allow him to pursue that opportunity."

Worthless player. A waste of a roster spot.

He needs the ball in his hands to be effective, which means it’s not KG’s, Ray’s or Paul’s hands. He can’t play defense. And he no athleticism and gets abused from all quarters in the NBA. He literally gives nothing worthwhile.

Manuel at least gives some D. What a waste of a roster spot if we get this plonker. Can we get a big man please? Pretty please?

I am fine with him needing the ball in his hands as the backup PG with 2 of the three, or possibly even all three, of the stars sitting on the bench resting. Rondo would play the majority of the minutes, and he could run the backups. At a decent price, which shouldn’t be an issue, he is a great option with upside. How do we not think he is worthy of Manuels spot?!

So you would sign him for the full mid-level exception, then, Who?

I’m stuck in the fact that Indiana, while Saras played for them, ran pretty much the same half-court offense that we’ll run. He did nothing for them. That speaks volumes to me. Rondo will need help. He won’t play more than 28MPG because of fouls. I know you don’t believe that PLAYA, but his stats speak to that….Without considering the way games will be officiated this season…it may be less. So we’d better have a true point beside him.

Great shooter, compensates Rajon’s weakness- he will fit in nicely with the Big 3. And the only time he needs the ball in his hands is when he’s knocking down a wide open 3 pointer. Get this guy Danny, he’s the missing piece!

by tb727 on Sep 20, 2007 4:30 PM EDT reply actions

Why were we (Danny) reported to be offering Powe and/or Baby Davis to Golden State when Warriors were going to buy him out anyway?

by docextension on Sep 20, 2007 4:41 PM EDT reply actions

The guy shot 40-37-90 for the Pacers & he’s got some point guard skills. All we need out of him is 10 minutes a game, and insurance in case Rondo goes down. Lets sign him to a 1 year contract!

by Mr October on Sep 20, 2007 4:42 PM EDT reply actions

I think also everyone is forgetting he has big game experience. He was the MVP during the Eruo playoffs or something. But I know he is a solid PG off the bench. Off the bench, why not.

Okay I don’t know why you are asking about the mid level exception so I’ll leave that.

Rondo won’t average the same number of fouls next year … he is a year more experienced and he can pull back a bit for the good of the team no problem. Now whether he is worth more than 30mins is another quesion.

My problem with Saras is that he can’t outplay Rondo or Eddie House or Gabe Pruitt. Plus Ray Allen and Tony Allen can do more than Saras. I don’t want him because he’s worthless.

He is a walking talking … catastrophe. Players that can’t run are in trouble. Players that can’t run and can’t play defense are impossible to win with. It’s not like his offensive talent is awe inspiring to the point where we want all 4 other defenders having to pick up cheap fouls, leave their men open and compensate for this chap.

He is worthless, he can’t outplay our guys already. I’m all for getting a point guard but one who can earn minutes.

I saw him play recently against Spain in the Euro championships. He plays with a passion. He does possess a really good three ball shot and he also has a flair for the spectacular pass, steal, etc… as I said he plays the game with passion. Yet, despite all this he is definitely challenged defensively. (The man is slow.) He is challenged as well when put under pressure defensively. He will often cough up the ball in one way or another. I like him but I don’t like him. What is so bad about signing Darrell Armstrong? That .fills my cup much better. Also, a question has to be asked. If Sharus is so good, what happened in Indy and San Francisco? He has had a lousy NBA career.

by gustusias on Sep 20, 2007 6:18 PM EDT reply actions

two words : get him

by cons on Sep 20, 2007 6:30 PM EDT reply actions

Like most Europeans, his game is suited for the international game(i.e. catch and shoot). Problem is where are we going to find the minutes for him. As far as I can tell, he wanted out of GS because of mins issues.

by cocofan on Sep 20, 2007 6:52 PM EDT reply actions

Plowboy – Yeah I’m sure you’re right. NBA players definitely play at the same level for their entire career that they did as a rookie. No way Rondo has a chance of improving on his stats. We should probably just cut him and only sign a player that is a Hall of Famer as a rookie because that is our only shot of them playing well in year 2.

Come on Plowboy, even you can come up with something a little brighter than that rebuttal…

What’s the risk in a 2 year contract with C’s option on year 2. If he doesn’t make it out of training camp due to them wanting someone else out there that looks better, or because he doesn’t outplay Pruitt or House at the backup, then fine. No harm done. You didn’t see me salivating over the guy. Just remember that Nash wasn’t all that impressive his first couple years.

by EJPLAYA on Sep 20, 2007 7:36 PM EDT reply actions

Why would we get him?
31 yrs. old life time avg. in pts = 7. something.
A waste of money.

by celticsboy746 on Sep 20, 2007 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

Celticsboy746- How about because he is a 90% free throw shooter we could bring in to get fouled at the end of games and clinch games? How about because his 7 pt career avg is in 18 min a game? How about because he is a 35% three point shooter? He can bring the ball up the floor well, he is a decent scorer and a solid shooter that can play a few minutes for a reasonable price.

How about most importantly if we sign him, Brick will quit whining about going out and getting a Euro?!

by EJPLAYA on Sep 20, 2007 7:53 PM EDT reply actions

I still don’t want him. His game is far from complete and has about as much to offer this team as Eddie House. I don’t think he plays well when he isn’t comfortable.

by rickyfan3.0... on Sep 20, 2007 8:00 PM EDT reply actions

Jasikevicius is a god in Europe and is reportedly being offered a 2/$9m deal in Euros. It is almost certain he will not play in the NBA during this time although he would have been a great fit as a weak-side spotup shooter with the Big Three.

by HRB on Sep 20, 2007 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

From everything I have read, he would much prefer to play in the NBA, not in Europe. He wants to play with the big boyz.

by footey on Sep 20, 2007 9:41 PM EDT reply actions

That would be all well and good if his buyout was for 90% or so of his current deal….but it wasn’t. He isn’t going to pass up over $10m in American dollars to sign a one-year deal at the league minimum which is the only offer he would receive.

by HRB on Sep 20, 2007 11:04 PM EDT reply actions

gustuias,
I love that idea. Darrell Armstrong isn’t a true point, and he’s old as dust, but he still plays with energy, and with KG, PP and RA, he wouldn’t have to run the offense — just play his role effectively and be a leader. That’s always been one of his greatest strength as a player.

I think he’d be an ideal fit. I’ve been wondering why the Cs aren’t talking about him.

by Cousin It on Sep 21, 2007 1:24 AM EDT reply actions

Hi from Spain!

You people definetly don’t know nothing about Sarunas. Forget about his defense and all this stuff. He is an amazing shooter and a very good passer but the most important thing, he is a winner and knows how to win it all. He won 3 straight Euroleague, and was dominant in all 3 Final Four (and his teams won even with his very poor defense, so maybe is not so poor).

Definetely take him now!

by PiensaEnVerde on Sep 21, 2007 5:02 AM EDT reply actions

international and the NBA are 2 different animals. yes, sarunas plays very well in international competition but in the NBA he can’t get off the bench. If the celtics played internationally all the time I would say sign him but he’s not for the nba.

by Red2 on Sep 21, 2007 8:37 AM EDT reply actions

I hate to say it, but I told you so. ;D When people were talking about trading for him, which made no sense money wise, I said he was just going to get bought out anyway so why even consider it. I wouldn’t mind taking a flyer on him for the vet minimum. What’s to lose? If he stinks, or CP, then you just dump him. Personally, I’d like to see Troy Hudson over this guy. TH is a better defender and player.

Also, if he is getting a 2/$9 million Euro offer overseas, he needs to take it. The Euro is at $1.41 today, and that translates to somewhere near $13 million. YIKES!

by Real World on Sep 21, 2007 9:14 AM EDT reply actions

C’mon EJPlaya, remember that Dan Dickau came to us after having his career year and was reaaly bad (although a lights out free throw shooter).

If Jasik sat the bench for one team he would be tempting based on PiensaenVerde’s evidence, but you have to conclude after two needy teams didn’t use him that he doesn’t have an NBA game.

Danny already drove past the warning signs that had Telfair the #3 PG at Portland, until we got him and he was, Yup!, #3 PG here.

I think Gabe Pruitt will be better than Orien Greene (just a hunch) thus I would leave as is (although I’m not buying any of the T.Allen as PG stuff). Eddie House is not nothing!!

by Wildblu1 on Sep 21, 2007 9:19 AM EDT reply actions

Dickau’s season in NO could be classified as a “career year” i suppose……but that is only because he never even won a backup PG job and hadn’t played regular minutes ever up until that point. Dickau was horrible in NO, shot poorly, couldnt create his shot or shots for others and defended nobody. Don’t let playing time when no other options were available fool you into believing a player “put up numbers.” Putting up numbers (and Dickau’s were pretty bad anyway) on terrible teams mean absolutely zero as somebody has to put up numbers on a bad team…..doing so does not add any value to a player.

by HRB on Sep 21, 2007 10:28 AM EDT reply actions

Wildblue – You’re talking like I am saying this guy is going to be our starting point. Here is a fact. He would play 10-15 min a game backing up Rondo. He has the ability to bring the ball up the floor against the other team’s backup and make a play or two. He can score the ball and has done so in his limited time.

Most importantly, we get down to a game where they are up 5 pts and the other team starts fouling, Rondo needs to be sitting on the bench. He can’t hit a clutch free throw because he is a poor shooter. He has a 65% free throw average last year. You need a pure shooter with a solid form to hit those game winners. Ray Allen is going to make them, but I don’t count on KG or Pierce to make them. I want 2 guys on the floor that can get fouled immediately and walk down to the other end and win the game for you. That’s what will make this team a true contender in the playoffs. At ‘’THE RIGHT PRICE’’ he would be a good option. Veteran Minimum is the thought. If not, then he can go to Europe.

On that same note, why can’t we find someone out of an IVY League school that is a solid ballhandler and shoots 90% from the floor that can be paid next to nothing? Probably because we actually want them to be a threat on the floor in those 10-15 minutes or a viable backup in case Rondo goes down. That is what SJ would do for you. He also might surprise some people and push Rondo a bit if everything went ’’perfect’’.

Guys,
I don’t mean to speak for EJPLAYA, but I’m not sure why everyone is jumping all over him. All he’s saying is that having another point wouldn’t hurt, and this guy does offer some skills and background that could make him valuable.

by Cousin It on Sep 21, 2007 11:54 AM EDT reply actions

I’m not jumping on EJPlaya. I don’t think a good case can be made for Jasik’s given 1.our recent track record finding PGs 2. Jasik’s recent history in the NBA 3. my belief that Eddie House can hold down the #2 spot and 4. my hunch that Pruitt will be better than his Las Vegas showing.
PS. Sure glad we didn’t somehow come up with Kirilenko. He sounds dead serious about wanting to go home. I don’t think Doc Rivers could get his head back in the NBA.

by Wildblu1 on Sep 21, 2007 1:04 PM EDT reply actions

Wildblue – I don’t feel like you are jumping on me about it, but I still disagree completely with:

1- Just because we have a recent track record of not as successful as we would have liked signings, doesn’t mean we stop trying to find someone who sticks.

2- I don’t see how his play hasn’t constituted a backup role. Decent numbers in limited minutes. If it were better than that we wouldn’t be having this discussion because he’d be starting there.

3- I agree that House should be able to bring it up, but he is a 2 really and if Rondo goes down he can’t be the starter.

4- I also feel Pruitt will be better, but he is the same IMO as House.

I do feel that Kirilenko would be a good pickup for a team that wants to run. Don’t think we really are though even though every year we have said we were going to. Older means less running. We’re a half-court team. No question. He would be just as unhappy here after a while. He would like Doc better though. Sloan is a hard-a** to his guys. Great coach, but you have to have thick skin with him.

Thanks Cousin IT! That really was my point.
