Big Men Working Out For C's

Mark Murphy reports:

Former Celtic Eric Williams, journeymen big men Kelvin Cato and Linton Johnson, and Esteban Batista, the first Uruguayan to ever play in the NBA, all worked out for the Celtics yesterday.

All are expected to continue their workouts today, with coach Doc Rivers and his staff expected to invite at least one and quite possibly two to training camp.

A team source stressed last night that none of these players have been offered guaranteed contracts, though Batista is reportedly demanding exactly that in exchange for a training camp invitation.

I wouldnt mind seeing Cato or Batista here. Cato might be able to provide some decent third string minutes. He’s always been a good defender with a big defensive body, never been super but he could throw out some fouls for a few minutes a game.

give batista a garunteed contract. I watched him in the FIBA tounament and the guy was a BEAST. If we sign him I garuntee he will move past Pollard as the backup C within 2 months. Sign Batista Danny, he is the only one on that list that can greatly improve and could be the steal of this off-season.

I second the other thoughts. Sign Batista. Eric Williams would be nice for sentimental reasons, but I seriously doubt he can still play. Let him be an assistant coach or something.

In a related story, I am also demanding a guaranteed contract in exchange for a training camp invite. Just waiting for that phone to ring…

yeah, e-dog is past his prime. cato would be fine. i worry about batista looking for too many minutes and shots – may be better off on a younger team.

I’m glad the C’s are still in the hunt for another big! If a full guaranteed vet minimum contract is all that is needed for Batista then the C’s should definitely grab him!

Ewill! Ewill! he fixed his teeth – bring him back. Great post up move, great guy. The old version of Gomes

Warning signs are up.
Pollard may not be able to play because of his back.

E-Dubs- I love it! #55 is still available right? Waive Manuel and Wallace to make room.

by tb727 on Sep 24, 2007 7:53 PM EDT reply actions

LOL JB, starting the panic button early huh?

Eric Williams would be great,… as an assistant coach.

Jeff, I am not for sure but I think Linton Johnson is a SF/wing type of guy. You imply he is a big, am I wrong?
Nice player IMO. He was one of my favs, pre-Posey as a defensive wing guy. 8)

Sign Esteban Batista.
Scored 20 against the US, shot 9 for 14.
6-10 270 guy who can play Center minutes and bang.
Averaged 2.5 rebounds in 8.7 minutes in 57 games last year in the NBA.
Only just turned 24 can already bang.

Cato would seem to be the logical choice as insurance if he is healthy and in shape. The last time he played in the league he was coming back off an injury and not in shape…..and looked horrible. There has to be a place in this league for Linton Johnson who isn’t that bad of a player…..i don’t see that place being Boston though as we are looking for veterans to round out the roster.

Jeff – Ewill assistant coach? Come on – show some “old school” spirit

How many Celtic assistant coaches does it take to screw in a light bulb errr…. I mean use a timeout wisely

5….one to hold the clip board and 4 to hold Doc down while somebody draws up a real play

by Master Po on Sep 24, 2007 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

I dont think Eric Williams is done. I think he still has some game, would be excellent for Chemistry and in helping to develop Powe, Wallace, and Davis. Sign him now and let him be one more great veteran off the bench.

Cato or Williams please…

by greenwise on Sep 24, 2007 10:51 PM EDT reply actions

Batista is worth the guaranteed contract. If he plays like he did during the Fiba games, then we will have an absolute steal.

With the others mentioned, we know what their upside is…because they’re already reached it and have expired awhile ago.

Eric Williams: good! We need some more veterans with playoff experience. Drop Manuel and pick him!

Kelvin Cato: good! Good defender and good piece for playoffs We need that kind of player on the bench! Drop Bandon Wallace and keep him!

Batista: average! Maybe a good player but only a project. However, i prefer him that pollard!

Linton JOhnson: good! But how many places can we generate? :D

by branhunter on Sep 25, 2007 2:32 AM EDT reply actions

posey can do what eric used to do. cato is another injured retread. batista at least is big and young and even tho i don’t know him, he seems to resemble potapenko, which would not be too bad.

by nazzbo on Sep 25, 2007 6:45 AM EDT reply actions

It’s Cato or Batista, clearly. If it’s a one year contract we’re talking about, I would take Cato. By the way, where do you have that workout pic from, Jeff?

by P_two on Sep 25, 2007 6:49 AM EDT reply actions

“Original Creation”, back in effect?

Could be a nice story…as long as he can still hoop.

by mcpu40 on Sep 25, 2007 7:03 AM EDT reply actions

Sign Batista. Sign Eric Williams as one of Doc’s assistants. The Cs don’t need Williams on the court.

by Bankshot on Sep 25, 2007 7:35 AM EDT reply actions

WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! DANNY!!!!!

Danny’s doing a great job at looking at this team and realizing what they need.

by ManUp on Sep 25, 2007 8:12 AM EDT reply actions

This discussion shows that we should have found some way to move up from #32 to above #28 and taken Tiago Splitter. DA’s failure to do that is going to go down as one of the biggest missed opportunities of his reign.

by Eeyore III on Sep 25, 2007 8:21 AM EDT reply actions

I see what you mean. I’m sure this has nothing to do with so many UConn fans that just happen to be Celtic fans.

by Birdbrain on Sep 25, 2007 9:01 AM EDT reply actions

Is Grant Long also getting a look or is that an old picture?

by tb727 on Sep 25, 2007 11:46 AM EDT reply actions

Have you people ever seen Kelvin Cato play? Especially in the last couple of years, when he’s looked like a wounded bird on the court? Seriously.

I can’t understand how the same fans who constantly moan about Scal would be clamoring to get Kelvin Cato. Scal has better skills and is younger and healthier. You’re not making any sense.

by Cousin It on Sep 25, 2007 12:35 PM EDT reply actions

btw, tb727, I would prefer Grant Long to Cato.

by Cousin It on Sep 25, 2007 12:36 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah that’s gotta be an old picture though right? Isn’t Long like 42?
