Just In Case
As of yesterday, Ainge had not made contract offers to the free agents working out at the team practice facility in Waltham: ex-Celtic forward Eric Williams, forward Linton Johnson III, center Kelvin Cato, and forward-center Esteban Batista. Ainge said he also has interest in free agent swingman Dahntay Jones.
Ainge acknowledged some interest in adding more big-man depth prior to training camp. He did, however, express concern about the aforementioned free agents probably wanting guaranteed contracts.
The Celtics currently have 15 players on their training camp roster, including 12 with completely guaranteed contracts.
"I'm not concerned about depth," Ainge said. "But you're always concerned about injuries or whatever can happen."

I did see comments by Kolbe that he thought Batista was the real deal, based on the Americas. Let’s be real, our post play offensively is soft and we are undersized. So, looking for help makes sense. Some of these guys may be here for the competition and exposure, maybe a favor to an agent…nothing more.
I expect the C’s will remain open to any backup player, Big to PG. I think there could be more options once some veterans become available as training camp progresses, and teams get a chance to see how their youth fits the team, leaving some expendable/bought out.

Greenwise, Jones is an upgrade to Manuel.
Manuel will be replaced by Cato/Batista
Wallace might be replaced by Johnson/Williams (whoever wins the invitation)
The article says that Ainge isn’t ready to give out fully guaranteed contracts. That means that nobody is willing to sign, Ainge will try to replace Manuel with Jones.

I think the SF are there because the Celtics have little faith that T. Allen will be able to get healthy enough this year to contribute.
A big man that can play C will likely beat out Manuel in camp.
Having a SF/SG that Wallace has to beat out for a spot is also good.
Still would like to see another PG invited, but I guess the pickings are slim.
Were talking about Ainge acquiring a player who might be the 10th or 11th guy off the bench…if that
Don’t be concerned who Danny signs because Pierce, Garnett and Allen will be playing at least 35 min a game. And I expect Rondo to be playing close to 30 min per game….That leaves Perkins playing 20-25 min per game…
So where does that leave everyone else with min?????
Please with respect o Batista, Williams, Cato, etc…they will not command many min…but will get much DNP
So leave it alone…lets start talking about trainning camp!!!!
Batista has never gotten any kind of consistent playing time. But just because the Hawks aren’t that high on him doesn’t mean he can’t become a good player. He’s only 24 years old, and teams often give up on guys too soon. I’ll admit, I was impressed by him during the Tournament of Americas. Neither Dwight Howard nor Amare Stoudamire could do much to slow him down. Maybe he won’t turn out to be anything, but it’s obvious he has the most upside of all the guys in the group.

Insurance. If KG goes down, who is scoring on the block? Who has any NBA experience to play defense? Are you willing to go the distance with Perk, Powe, and Davis?
I think it is important to continue to evaluate talent, because injuries do happen, right PP?

Hahaha … Greeenlove I’m with you on questioning his past performance. Doesn’t seem to be an NBA player. Dominant Euro in the making that could return to the big L some day but not this year.
swingmen? Why are we looking at swingmen? Hey Danny, everybody says you need a point guard, you might want to take a looksie. We’ve got Pierce,Allen,Allen,House,Posey, and Wallace already. Garnett could even play a little SF in dire circumstances. If there is one place we are solid it is on the wings. I don’t understand what he could be thinking, if the injuries are so bad that the 6th or 7th wingman on the roster ends up playing at all, we might as well forget the season. The only reason this would make sense is if there are plans for a trade, but I really doubt that’s the case.

I’m thinking that Ainge is thinking Dahntay Jones could play some pg, like he did for Memphis.
As for the poster who said they could’t see the role of adding another big, as they would only be the 10th or 11th man off thebench at best, I disagree. Perkinds is bound to hack like he normally does. Therefore, a guy like Batista could easily get 20-25 mins per game.
