Blockbuster History Bodes Well For C's

Hopefully history will repeat itself.  From ProBasketball News

Historically, whenever a superstar or rising player is traded, his old team doesn’t get back equal value or a fellow superstar and his new team gets an energetic, hungry player who just needed a change of scenery.

Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett are expected to give Boston more than that. They’re expected to bring a championship right away or in the near future.

History is on Boston’s side.

Many greats who have been traded either have brought their new teams a championship in their first seasons, brought a title within a couple of years of their arrival or gotten the squads to the Finals in Year 1. And many of the players have won the MVP award.

The article goes on to site several examples.

The examples are quite mixed. Shaq, Drexler and Oscar were good ones. The rest, all the players were too young and how many of them gave up a premier young post player in the trade? Shaq, Drexler and Oscar were sold for 20c on the dollar. KG wasn’t. Just saying.

There is one trade not mentioned that is a catch 22 of some sorts. Remember the Hawks gave up Bill Russell to acquire Ed Macaulay and join Bob Petit. Easy Ed was pretty much the face of the franchise (although by this time Cousy and Sharman were already making their mark). Nevertheless, The trade worked for the Hawks short term when they won it all in 1958. But we all know how that worked out for the Celtics. This is why I am a bit nervous about the trade. Al Jefferson is most likely not going to be Bill Russell. But the Wolves did trade away their Ed Macaulay.

Hindsight is 20-20. In 10 years will Al be seen as the ‘rising star’?

Who knows? it’s all speculation…Big Al and Gerald could become superstars or maybe Big Al remains plagued with injuries like he was prior to this year, while Gerald never develops. The other question mark is going to be the first rounder of Minnesota’s that we gave back to them. We’ll just have to wait and see….at least we have 2 teams to keep track of now since the Wolves are the Celtics West.

The reason that I like the deal is because the one sure thing is that KG is a superstar now and we don’t have to wait to see if he lives up to his potential.
