Rondo 50/50, Pruitt May Get Time
As coach Doc Rivers put it yesterday, "They're playing better than anyone in the NBA right now. Our record is better. But Portland is playing better. So, it's a good test."
But maybe not a fair one, as the valuable Rondo was held out of practice yesterday with his combo bad back/hamstring. Rivers said it was "50-50" whether Rondo would play. Rondo himself said it was the proverbial "game-time decision."
Neither Tony Allen nor Eddie House has Rondo's expertise, speed, craftiness, or point-guard mentality. Rivers said he might decide to use rookie Gabe Pruitt instead. Pruitt has generally been either inactive this season or playing for the Utah Flash in the D-League. He last appeared in a Celtics uniform a week ago, making a 31-second cameo against the Bobcats.
"One thing Gabe gives us is the shot," Rivers said. "He can shoot the ball. We need that."

well he might as he thinks we need his shot.
why does doc think we need his shot though? we have ra pp and kg all shooting from the outside. then we have house and scali shooting from outside.
i guess its his ideology outside game vs inside game. heck perk only gets about 3 to 5 shots a game and could be 3 for 3 and never get another shot, i think he has the highest shoting % on the team w/3 hall of famers. Also KG is shooting and doing most of his scoring from deep outside. I guess doc wants another outside shooter in Gabe to spell house and Rays outside games.
i would like to see his play inside and crash the boards, KG used to get 12 to 13 rpg now he gets 8 or 9rpg max, even perk scores more than he rebounds according to his avg, and thats saying something
I want to see Pruitt, as well, but the last thing we need him for is “his shot”. We need a point guard who can actually dribble the basketball, and make smart decisions with it. One of this team’s problems lately is that it has relied too much on jump shots, and not enough on penetration and ball-movement.
I’m very dissapointed about the way we lose at Garden last Monday. Even not playing good basketball we leaded by 14 in the fourth quarter. If we consider us a team with serious expectations, WE CAN NOT LOSE THAT GAME. I think it’s that kind of games that you must win even not playing well (considering the 14 points lead in the final quarter). I’m not so optimist about tonight’s game. I hope we could return to victory’s way as soon as posible.

KG couldn’t get his ‘shot’ to fall the other night.
Had his jumper with whatever it was (10 seconds?) on the clock gone down, we’d have split with the Wizards.
Now is the time for Gabe it appears, I’m excited to see what he brings to the table.
I still say Payton would’ve been a good backup PG, but what the hell do I know?
3 comments, maybe off topic—1. On “Celtics Live” last nite there was a segment on Johnny Most (died 15 years ago). Bob Ryan made, what I thought, were unflattering remarks. To me this was a tribute to Johnny and those remarks should not have been made and, in my opinion, should not have been included. Johnny is a Celtic Legend and it is he who passed on the team traditions to different generations of players and fans. If this was to be an objective opinion segment on Johnny, fine, but that wasn’t the purpose. 2. Bill Bulpett seems to have the Celtics recent problems right on. He basically summarizes them as a lack of practice of a team that hasn’t been together a long time. Teams like Detroit and SA can handle this. Even the Wizards have been together longer. Of course we are missing a healthy Rondo, but I think Bulpett has it right regardless. 3. On Perk. There has been an uptick lately of anti-Perk rhetoric. Bulpett pointed out that even though Perk’s stats didn’t show much in the first quarter of the Wizard’s game, he pointed out that the Wizard’s would have been way ahead if not for Perk’s play. He was talking about his man on and help defense where he continually interupted the W’s offense. Just had to get it off my chest.
hmmm
Good comments, TrueGreen I don’t think Bob Ryan meant any disrespect. Bob over the years is trying to rejuvenate his career. So I give him a Mulligan 1000 times LOL
But, Perk and Rondo are the “ONE” of the reasons for the Celtics position in the standings. Perk still is growing into his body and learning the game. He would be a first year rookie this year if he had gone to college for 4 years. I think Doc is going with Possey more because of his experience and I can’t blame him for that in the 4th quarter.
As far as Pruitt, he is extremely raw and with all the potential, it will easily take him another 2-3 years before he develops. He will for all intents and purposes get his pocket picked by the better guards in the league. I question his decision making and if he panics in certain spots. Again maturity at that level is very important…
We will have growing pains for sure with the Point Guard position.
Play Pruitt and see if he can handle the traps they will use against him. You need a point guard when you run. If you walk it up, Pierce or Ray Allen or Tony Allen can bring the ball up.
Where it would be factor would be on the defensive end. Can he
guard opponents PGs? If as Doc suggests Pruitt has a shot it would be helpful against Portland’s zone. Boston’s zone attack
is not very good.

I think the Cs do need some offense out of the point position just as much as they need the decisionmaking. I think part of the problem is the lack of production from Rondo. Even before he got hurt the offense was sputtering and I think that points to his lack of production. He is not keeping defenses honest, not being aggressive at all lately, which leads to defenses smothering the big 3. If we had a point that kept the defenses honest, like Rondo was doing earlier in the season, then that would open things up a bit for the Big 3, making the offense flow better. Not a good thing when your point guard is putting out 4 pts and 1 assist games. PP leading the team in assists is not a good thing, imo. I’m not buying that it’s the system. There have been several games where Rondo had 7 assists. He’s young and inconsistent and I think that will hurt the team in the long run if he doesn’t find some consistency in his game.
A veteran point guard is definitely in order.
I think Doc mentioned his shot because of the open looks that Rondo always seems to have on the weak side. Sure, he’s been taking more of them. But, if you could put someone out there who could both bring up the ball AND hit that shot more consistently, then we’d really have something. So, I think he mentioned it because it is the thing he knows Pruitt can do, while he’s not as confident in his ability to handle the ball under pressure.
