Damon Verbally Opts Out
The buyout is scheduled to be made official Monday, sources said. After the Grizzlies formally release him, Stoudamire would then have to clear a 48-hour waiver period before choosing his new team. But the 33-year-old is expected to go unclaimed.
It is also being reported at the Memphis Edge. Not sure which source was first.

he’s not a stopper on defense but someone has to stop him on offense.

He’s not perfect, but are we really going to roll the dice on Cassell being traded or bought out? Furthermore, while I like Cassell better, he’s hardly a defensive force or, at his age, a sure thing to work out here. At this point, we need a backup PG, Stoudamire fits the bill, we might as well go for it.

how does he play defense?
He’s put in an awful body of work this season on the defensive end. He can’t keep anyone out of the lane. He’s been letting opposing point guards prance down the middle of the court and get right to the cup whenever they want. Very poor defensive player.
How Rondo guarded Telfair last night …. that’s Damon on a good day, not his best day, but a good day. Giving up too much space, been beaten on screens, been beaten by quickness and penetration.
Yep that’s the present day Damon Stoudamire.
I’m not sure how much our team D will save him either. I like Gasol and especially like Darko as weakside shot blockers and help defenders. KG brings a lot more than either (I’d take Darko over Kendrick for D) but not enough to hide Damon.
I don’t think he’ll be much of a help. His skill set is something we need, but his lack of D will stop him from being a rotation player. He’ll be like Scal or Powe, some nights he plays some nights he won’t play. His standard of play is too low to be a regular in the rotation.
Look at 3 things, defense, setting up team mates and scoring. Cassel wins on D (not by much but better TEam D – if he gets beaten its in the direction of help etc. and he is big enough to play post D which Stoudamire cant, setting up team mates (edge to Cassel)which Cassel is great at and Stoudamire regards it as an afterthought, and scoring – Stoudamire is a volume scorer and has better outside range, and I would not want him to take the last shot, while Cassel would be a great money guy to compliment Ray Allen (problem with Pierce is they never call the fouls in last seconds.
