New Word In Basketball: "Chippy"
Manchvegas Bob has a very amusing take on the increased use of the word "chippy" in association with basketball and the Celtics in particular. A fun read.

Chippy is used when other teams are taking cheap shots or mouthing off to the other team or refs. Used a lot here in CT high school hoop.
Chippy is not a positive thing at all and if you are called chippy it is like calling you a …..well maybe I shouldn’t go there.

it feels like ‘chippy’ is the word that describes semi ok physicality and trash talk to the next level, but bordering on getting dangerous. red himself was always mr. chippy, and so were his teams. and just say tommy and that’s enough. the refs have control and they just seem inconsistent. there’s a land between ticky tack, screw the rookie, don’t breathe hard on michael jordan or the league’s designated box office saint du jour, and the floppomatics that screams for chippy to creep in.
I’ve noticed the word… I’ve embraced the word… and I’ve started using it in contexts that make no sense whatsoever.
The other day this chick I am sleeping with started throwing a text message tantrum because I wasn’t inviting her over…. I responded with, “Don’t get chippy with me darling… I’ll call you as soon as this game is over”.
Her response… “Chippy??… What’s chippy?”
I implore you all to join the chippy bandwagon.
