Eddie House is the most underrated player on the C's

Eddie House is your prototypical Celtic. He bleeds Celtics pride. I emphasize the "bleed." This guy has been disrespected by being benched in favor of inferior players throughout his career, yet has established himself as one of the best #3 or 4 guards in the NBA. On many teams, I believe that Eddie House would be a viable starter. It's easy for outsiders (fans of other teams, casual fans of games) to insist that House only performs in his role due to the talent he's around, but this is a shortsighted comment that doesn't take into account knowledge of how Eddie plays. To me, House on a good day is nothing short of AI. It's kind of a stretch, one might add, to compare a backup guard to a future hall of famer, but once again, if you've seen Eddie House play, you know what I'm talking about. The way House can shoot over his defender all day everday without a conscience is amazing. This guy has a total knack for making a shot in traffic that has no business going in. He makes them when he's open and they count, too. In BOS's game 4 comeback, he nailed a jumper to give the Celtics a lead - a lead that seemed unfathomable, unattainable for the majority of the game. In a moment of rememberance, he thanked the fans in a bow down salute immediately after the clock finished ticking in game 6 ; that exact point in time had sealed relief yet glory for Celtics fans who had just been waiting too long. He just knows how to be in the right place at the right time - focusing his energies in places where they matter and where he's recognized, but really he's not doing it for his own personal recognition.

Live long, Eddie. Stay away Sam. This is Eddie's role.

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

I would agree with you that Eddie is the most under rated player on the C’s. I will tell you last year at the start of the playoffs when Eddie was not playing at all and sam was out there shooting terrible I was going nuts! Eddie will always stretch the floor and knock down the shot!

I love Eddie and agree that he personifies what being a Celtic is all about. I thought these intangibles were overlooked often last year. I really wanted the C’s to bring him back because I thought he was a great fit.

However, saying he could start somewhere is a bit of a stretch. He has been a career journeyman for a reason. He is a specialist and has really found his niche with this Celtics team. But to be more than a valuable reserve, he would need to be more of a point guard at 6 feet tall, and would need to be bigger to play the 2 permanently.

Most never consider defense when pining for Eddie to play the 2, ironic, since this Celtics team prides itself on defense and is what makes this team great. So every player’s ability to defend their position is what makes them most valuable, Eddie simply cannot cover 2’s in the NBA on a consistent basis. If another team pairs 2 combo guards for stretches, sure, Eddie can come in with Pruitt and matchup. But night in and night out as a starter, he cannot play the point, and he cannot defend 2’s.

Eddie is a great bench player, that is all he will ever be, but for the Celtics, that is more than enough with all the other great players that start ahead of him.

Well...

Thanks for your response KJ33. The funny thing about Eddie’s defense, though, is that it wasn’t supbar despite popular opinion. His feet are always shuffling and he does a sound job of simply staying in front of his guy and having the recognition for the rebound. Perhaps KG and Perk down low help give us the illusion that Eddie is a great defender based on the limited points per contest the opposition usually tacks on against our bolstering D, but hey, he does EXACTLY what’s needed of him, and then some more. We can’t have Lindsey Hunter on the defensive end and Eddie House’s 3’s at the same time. That’s just plain greedy now.

Wasn’t thrilled about getting eddie in the beggining but he completely won me over. makes up for his small size with a nose for big plays and the fastest release in the game. should see alot of floor time this year as our 1st scoring option off the bench if tony doesn’t explode. sam-i-am better have his allien ass in a suit this year.

Hey, welcome to the NEW CelticsBlog Eddie! Excited for your first game Tuesday? Lol!
Nah, Eddie’s the man, but a lot of that article was very overblown. JMO

Was it really overblown?

It might seem like a very confusing piece based on the fact that he’s a bench player, but he really did have a tremendous impact on our title bound team last year with his shooting and stability from a position that was billed a problem child in training camp. One could also argue that House’s stability helped Rondo feel more comfortable in his role as a starter, given that a reliable option behind him would be there to “save him” when he wasn’t performing. At times, though it may not have happened often, Eddie did come to the rescue when Rondo came up blank.

TPD, as the (unofficial) number 1 Eddie House fan, I support your fanship of him!

However, your post inspired me to coin the phrase, “CelticsBlog Gaffe,” to describe the following statment:

To me, House on a good day is nothing short of AI.

You may have gone a bit overboard there. Perhaps you made a typo, and meant to say, “House’s heart, energy, and intesity are nothing short of AI’s.”

i like eddie

but he’s not underrated. he’s got a ton of heart but he is not and will never be a clutch player. hes about rated correctly IMO.

Also I don’t get why people have the mentality that it’s either House or Cassell. Can’t you like and root for them both?

Either way good post hats off to you

God bless and good night!

Well...

I like Eddie too :)

But yes he is underrated by Celtics fans.

A lot of people wanted his head during our ECF date with the Pistons. Remember? They were shockingly much more content with Cassell running the point. You know, the Cassell who missed shots and didn’t protect the ball even though he was said to be the savior in that regard?

Thankfully, Doc re-optioned Eddie to the rotation where he belonged. I’m surprised he re-signed. He was disrespected by being replaced by the broken down version of “Sam I Am” midseason. I know it was smart at the time to nab Sam for nothing – for he provided experience and a proven track record – I just was never in favor of seeing House replaced in a role he really couldn’t have performed better in.
