Cleveland is the best team in basketball...

If they can find a way to finagle some scoring out of the 4 spot, they are going to be really tought to beat. I didn't think we'd beat the last year, but we did...

They have the best player in hoops (by far), a bevy of nice pg's, great defense and a 7'3 guy who catches fire every time he plays us. Mo Williams is a nice addition (although slightly overrated) to that squad.

I hate them though... I am going to hate it when they eliminate us this year.

I basically just wanted to post something, so here it is.  It beats my "Mark Blount: handsome philanthropist" idea. Love the new site.

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

I still don’t think they could beat the Celtics.

I picked Cleveland over us last year…

I just think Bron will not be denied this year. The refs wont let him!!

Huh

How is Cleveland better than Boston? I will take Rajon over their point guards, I know Rajon’s offense isn’t great, but he can at least play defense. SG – Sasha or Ray Allen – that’s easy. SF – Lebron over Pierce, but not by as much as some say. PF – KG is three times the player of Big Ben. C – Big Z over Perk, but Z is due to be injured again. As for the bench, the Cavs have West and Wally, two players the Celtics already gave up on. I personally don’t see Cleveland finishing ahead of Boston, Philly, or Orlando. LeBron is a stud, but nobody could carry that team to the championship the way they are currently set up.

They aren't the best

I’m sorry, they aren’t the best. You have a defensive oriented coach working with mostly offensive players who don’t play much defense. Mo Williams is a good shooter, but how much defense does he play? How about Boobie? Pavlovic? Big Z? And Ben Wallace has never been that great of a defender, he was piggybacked by Rasheed on those Detroit teams. Rasheed is the one who truly covered the paint and guarded it whereas Wallace went for weakside rebounds and blocks (he had quick hands and athleticism so he put up some outstanding numbers for a while). Devoid of athleticism, he’s been rendered useless today.

I think LeBron James is the best player in the game as well, but his personnel is pretty much the same as last year’s. I’m sorry.

I don't buy that they're the best either,

but I think that they are the Celts’ biggest threat in the East (supporting cast being what it is, LBJ really does make that big a difference), and Im not sure your assessment of the team’s defense is fair. While you might have some qualms with their defenders as individuals, Mike Brown’s team was fourth in efficiency in 2006-07, and they were 11th last year – despite playing more than the first quarter of the season without Anderson Varejao (one of their bigger difference-makers at that end of the floor) and then making a blockbuster deal at midseason, which should give them the grace of a brief adjustment period. You’re likely to see that ranking improve this season.

Again, I’m certainly buying the green as the East’s (and likely the league’s) best, which is why I disagree with the premise of the OP, but the Cavs are the team I’d be most worried about. And their defense is a big part of that.

I think Cleveland is the 2nd best team in the East so I don’t think your far off.

Remember Billy was just ‘kidding’ about his Lakers pick.

"Reverse jinx"

Haha. Yeah, right. Bill Simmons has as much credibility as a “fan” with me now as Dan Shaughnessy.

They were our toughest test last year in the playoffs. Thank goodness for home court advantage. That’s why the regular season is so important.

I still like us, but I think Cleveland could have beaten the Lakers too.

i’ve thought cleveland is better than people give them credit for since before they went to the EC finals, but the celts are still head and shoulders better. it’s hard to belive people still don’t give credit to how good our big 3 are.. and the biggest move was holding onto Tommy Thibs! as long as pierce and KG are healthy nobody beats us.

I still think Lebron has to figure out how to lift his teammates up so they can work better as a team. There is so much hype around one player that they can’t work together well enough to get it done, despite having a descent roster the last couple of years. I think we’ll once again have to hear the “Lebron doesn’t have enough talent around” him mantra when they lose, which always makes me shake my head.

Beast of east is us

They will be great rivals. They used their size well against us, but I think we can out do them again with our fast defense. I look for our offense to be more efficient, and Ray Allen to be used better this year.

Go Celts!

Despite Dumars attemptive firesale, I still think Detroit is going to be tough. Their starters may be losing a step but their bench keeps getting stronger and stronger. And overall their continuity is better than Clevelands. I think Orlando will be better also. It’s not that I don’t think Clevelands got the goods, but the whole team, the whole town needs to understand that it takes 5.

This could be true

Lebron James, Lebron James, Lebron James. I felt like last year the Cavs were the 2nd best team in the playoffs, and they were definitely our toughest test in the playoffs, although Atlanta was a close second so I’m not sure how much that really means.

I don’t think they are the favorites at this point, however I would not be surprised if the Cavs won the NBA title this year. The Western Conference was outed last year as basically fraudulent. I mean what they have is a bunch of good teams, but the 3 best teams in my opinion were in the East last year. I’m not sure that has changed. The Lakers lack of defense is too big of an obstacle for them to overcome. The Spurs are finally done. The Hornets and Jazz are spectacular up and coming teams, but again they lack the defensive consistency to win an NBA title.

If Houston can stay healthy, they have the best foundation right now to compete with the Celtics, Cavs or Pistons. Unfortunately, staying healthy for them seems almost impossible. But they are the only West power (outside of the rapidly aging Spurs) that can actually play defense. A Houston/Cavs Final would be amazing. Mcgrady and Lebron both going for their first title shot, wow the ratings would soar and the NBA would continue it’s resurgence! As fun as that would be, I still want it to be the Celtics.

seems unfair to say
But they are the only West power (outside of the rapidly aging Spurs) that can actually play defense

…when one considers that the Lakers and Hornets were both top-seven teams in defensive efficiency a season ago.

White flag

After further reviewing the defensive numbers from last year I will conceded that point Steve. The Hornets and Lakers are definitely better defensive teams than they initially appear.

I think we may only see LA get better...

…if Bynum stays healthy. He has the ability to be a major force for them in the paint at that end right away.

Well based on what we saw last year in the finals, they’re going to need to. In my opinion Detroit and Cleveland were tougher tests than the Lakers were for us. I do agree that Bynum may be what they were missing. Gasol is a great player, but nobody is accusing him of being the toughest player in the NBA. Bynum’s presence might compliment Gasol perfectly.

If I had to wager right now though, I think the Hornets would be my pick to come out of the West. Considering their two key players are so young, there’s a better chance that we will see them get even better. Houston definitely has a great shot if they stay healthy, it’s just very hard to bet on that considering the past. I don’t think adding Posey is as big of a deal as people are making it. Paul and West will determine how far that team goes, not an overrated role player.
