No Repeat
As much as I love the C's I don't see them winning their 18th banner this year for the reason of not improving the team at its most vulnerable position and that is the center position. Without question they are a playoff bound team but they are weak at the center spot and who do they have to back up Kendrick Perkins, Leon Powe and Patrick O'Bryant that tandem is insufficient against the likes of Shack, Yao Ming, Dwight Howard, Jermain Oneil Greg Oden and the list goes on. While I like the effort of Powe to get position and take charged, he fouls much too much. I do recognize he's playing out of position and should probably be playing the power forward position. O'Bryant isn't physical enough for my liking to play like a force at the center spot and this is his 3rd year in the league ! O'Bryant is a 7 footer and has next to no inside game and a suspect outside shot and on to of those insufficiencies he's a weak defender and average rebounder ! No one talks about his passing skills because there isn't much to say about it. So we have Kendrick Perkins as the starting center, and we all know of the history of Perks shoulder. Besides the fact that Perkins has a troubled shoulder he is still too foul prone after being in the league 4 years and I'm referring to some very very silly petty fouls. Perk has no outside shot to considered a threat from out of the perimeter. his offensive attack to the rim is methodical and slow, his passing to cutters is below average and too often results in turnovers ! So that brings us to Glen Davis, all I will say is that he tries and is the quicker of all the centers that i just spoke of, but Big Baby is not an adequate center for the NBA, he stands a generous 6'7.
So there you have it the achilles heel of the Celtics that good teams and good center will exploit ! I was hoping that Patrick O'Bryant would be a great pick up fo the C's but from what I saw thus far in preseason games he doesn't have the heart of a lion so I'm hoping he can meow very loudly against the opposition
Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

Repeat
I think they wll repeat
lets see who was right by the end of the year.
I promiss not to come here and say i told u so. :)
I understand your argument...
… but this team went 50-14 in games P.J. didn’t play in last year (and went 7-0 in games where he played 10 minutes or less). Powe and BBD have one more year of experience, and POB has looked serviceable.
The big man situation isn’t ideal, but I think the team is fine, and they’ve got to be the favorites to repeat.
All the negativity in this town sucks. It sucks, and it stinks, and it sucks. - Rick Pitino
Didn't we hear this same argument last year?
This is like deja vu all over again, I could be reading last year’s post. You listed some starters, but I missed all the back up 5’s around the league we have to fear. Back up Centers are luxuries, every team would like more Bigs, but there just aren’t that many out there, period. That is how a 38 yr old PJ could come back in March, look rusty as anything, and still end up playing a significant role. I realize no PJ this year, but as Roy said, the Celts did OK before he arrived last year. And, like last year again, there is plenty of time to go fishing in March if it appears we are a player away.
Way to show support come on now its too early!!
The season hasnt even started yet! Why go say they have no chance when they have yet to play ONE game? I’d say u could go say this when the all star game comes but now in October???? Who is to say that this team lacks the intensity and drive from last year? Last check your measured by HOW MANY rings you get when you play as a boston celtic? One isnt enough…. GO CELTICS!!!!

Centers
“Leon Powe and Patrick O’Bryant that tandem is insufficient against the likes of Shack, Yao Ming, Dwight Howard, Jermain Oneil Greg Oden and the list goes on.”
- I don’t buy that argument. Wouldn’t Powe and company be matched up against other teams back up centers? Also Shaq is washed up and the 3 of the other 4 your mentioned have injury concerns as well. Yes Dwight Howard is a force of nature. But he gets the edge almost every night he takes the court, regardless of who he goes up against.
- Also I think Boston’s starting 5 will play even better together this season.
Green Bandwagon: Repeat in '09 or bust. Are you on the bandwagon?
PJ Brown is waiting
I find this speculation premature. During the first half of regular season, we are auditioning the bench. If the usual suspects are not producing, PJ Brown’s ego will not turn a deaf ear to his fellow ringbearers. Plan B is waiting a phone call.
The real question is who will take the “charges” on defense. And with every team, continued Good Health.

We haven't even played our first game yet
and you’re already devoting that much ink to whether we’re gonna repeat???
Would your opinion change if/when we sign PJ in February?
Seems to me the same was said early and often last season too.
Way to go out on a Limb!
guess what, everyone can say that about their teams, and only one person would be wrong. Odds are we won’t repeat, but we have as good a chance of winning this season as last season.
First of all, the season hasn’t even started yet…
I trully believe we can repeat, for clear reasons:
1. The team chemistry will be even better. The core has played together for one whole season.
2. Rondo is improving fastly and this development is scary
3. Perk has solidified his game, and is the perfect center to play with Garnett
4. The bench lost Posey and Brown but gained lot of athleticism and youth
5. Tony Allen has more confidence and will have more minutes. He can be the best player in the second unit
6. Eddie House has looked terrific in preseason. He will handle the ball better and for the second time in his career he repeats with a team. His shots will make huge benefits for the C’s
7. O’Bryant will surely help against biggest centers, and will be a valuable asset in the defensive end with his blocked shots
8. Leon Powe is improving and becoming an excellent basketball player
9. Gabe Pruitt will help too. He proved he can help this team
10. Sam Cassell knows the system better and will help during the season. His mentoring will make Rondo and Pruitt better
But you know what? I think it’s time for the season and for the C’s to speak for themselves!
I'll jump on...
Yeah thats crazy talk. Lets recall the starting centers of the NBA champions since 2003. Uhhh… Kendrick Perkins, Ben Wallace, Shaq (while i won’t get started on why it should be Dampier), David Robinson, Nazr Mohammed, Fabricio Oberto. I’d say the center position isn’t essential for a champion. If there is a need, we will address it midseason
I'm not to worried...
The only three centers we might actually run into in the play-offs are Jermaine O’neal, Dwight Howard, and Yao Ming. The only one that Perkins would probably have trouble with is Yao. How many minutes is are backup C going to play a starting center anyways?
Jermaine O’neal isn’t really his center. He’s like a soft version of KG. Something like KG without the heart. I’m confident that Perk can D him up.
Dwight Howard is a bully he’s only truly dominant offensively when he can push his guy underneath the basket he can’t do that to Perk. Big Baby is also strong and low enough to keep him pretty far from the basket.
Yao is the guy that could be a problem. He is an excellent scorer with the size and skill to abuse just about any center. The thing is he doesn’t like physical play and Perk is physical enough to really bother him. If Mehmet Okur can keep him out of the paint and shooting turn around jumpers in a 7 game series I think Perk can.
Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
