Settling In and FAQs

Well, it has been a couple of days and it seems like most people have had a chance to look around, claim their username, and get a feel for the new place.

For those of you that missed the initial post on Friday, please see it here.  It will walk you through claiming your old username as well as some of the new features of the site.

Any change takes a little bit of time to get used to, but just like with the other upgrades we've made over the years, we will all get used to it soon.  That said, I understand that there are still a few questions that are coming up frequently and I'd like to try to address them here:

Star-divide

Q:  What happened to the Forums?  Where are the Tommy Points?

A: The Forums are alive and well and they still have Tommy Points and all the stuff you love. You can find a link to them on the right side of the menu bar at the top.

One point of clarity here is that the FanPosts are not really a replacement for the Forums.  They are, in a sense, mini blogs for each of you to publish your own thoughts on the team.  These typically should be longer posts and not short thoughts.

I don't mean to pick on him, but someone just posted a FanPost titled "New Screenname" where he tells everyone that he picked a new screen name and "and now im filling space because each post has to be atleast 75 words long and i don't have anything else to say."  I would suggest leaving posts like this for the forums.

Another note, if you see a link of note or a photo or video that you want to share with everyone, the FanShots are a fantastic tool to use.

Q: Where is Celtics Stuff Live?

A: They just annoucned that they are joining Comcast SportsNet.  A huge break for them and we couldn't be happier.  You will still get updates about the shows each week, but they've got their own thing going now.

Q: Why isn't the Recent Forum Topics widget on the front page so slow to update?

A: This is an issue that the tech guys are working through.  The hope is that in time they will be able to resolve it.  In the meantime, please think about bookmarking either the Recent Posts or Updated Topics links (depending on your preference).

Q: Why did I have to pick a new user name?

A: We are trying to blend two big communities together, so there's bound to be some duplication of usernames.  Clearly "Jeff" wasn't available so I had to change my name and so did a number of the mods.   Thank you for your understanding.

Q: Why do I have to log in twice?

Again, in time we hope to bridge the systems to tie your SBN username with your forum identity for just one log-in.  Thank you again for your patience.

Other cool stuff you should get to know better:

Auto updating comments - look at the top of any comments section and you'll see some shortcut keys - I'm already a huge fan of the "Z" shortcut.  I'll let Trei explain:

You no longer need to refresh the page to see new comments. If you're logged in, new comments will automatically appear on the page every few seconds. When you post a comment, the page will not refresh either. If you want to quickly cycle through all the new comments, you can press the C key on your keyboard. Unmark a new comment after you've read it with the X key. And use the Z key if you want to umark comments as you're cycling through them.

As you use these shortcuts to cycle through comments, press the R key to reply to the current comment. All these helpful keyboard shortcuts are listed at the top of each comments section for reference.

Other SBNation blogs - By now you should have your own SBN user account.  Use it!  Check out all the other communities in this network and take the opportunity to hang out with some fans of other teams.  Some good examples:

Thanks and feel free to add your own questions and comments below.  Thanks!

What do fans think of Leon changing his # from 0 to - ?

Seriously, how come on the roster page, when you click on each of the names of the players, it brings you to some seemingly unrelated older posts from Green Bandwagon?

good question

the player names are linked via “tags” to all older posts tagged with the player’s name

the old CelticsBlog posts didn’t have these tags so it is going to the old Green Bandwagon posts that do have the tags

as I get a feel for how to use them and as I post more often, you’ll see CelticsBlog posts related to those players – see Paul Pierce as an example (it goes to the ring post that has Pierce’s name on it)
