New Blog: Sounder At Heart for Seattle Sounders Fans!

Change

Yet again, change is upon us with Celticsblog.  Everything you knew and loved about the old blog is still here, it's just potentially in a different location.  The chat room is still here; it's linked on the lefthand side of the blog, or can be found here: http://www.celticsblog.com/pages/celticsblog-live-chat.  The forums are still here; they're found on the righthand side of the upper menu bar, or here: http://forums.celticsblog.com.

We want honest feedback on this thing; nobody will get disciplined if you say you hate it.  We want feedback and brainstorming, on how to make Celticsblog better.  What do you like about the site?  What *don't* you like?  What can we do better?  How can we make the blog more user-friendly?

One big change you'll see is the fanposts, of which this is one.  Normally, these will serve as mini-blog posts, for members of the community.  Posts that are deemed exceptionally good will be "elevated" to the main blog, giving our members a chance to get a little more exposure.  Fanshots are a quick way to get attention for a link, video, or photo you like.

So, give us some feedback.  One great thing about the SBN setup is that the web designers are fully committed to making Celticsblog a great place, so any comments you post will be considered (and will be greatly appreciated.)

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

What is the purpose...

of “Fanposts?” Why is this section separate from the forums? I’d kind of like to see the location of Fanposts and Forums switched on the front page, I like the forums more. But that could just be familiarity.

by Fan from VT on Oct 26, 2008 2:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hear, hear

I echo the same feelings, especially regarding the switch. We’re probably going to see a duplication and some tradeoff between the forums and the fanposts. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the same subject being discussed in a frontpage article and its comments section, in the forum and in the fanposts section.

Other than that, it looks great, sophisticated and really easy to use. I’d like to suggest some improvements, but so far I’m liking what I see.

Still figuring everything out...

I don’t have a lot of time to devote to CB, so I’m not too happy about having to find everything again. There does look to be some good potential for future features, and I like the blogging community making it easier to find other sports/teams blogs.

But I’m not a fan of the “fanposts” so far… they just seem like awkwardly fromatted forum topics.

Not a fan of the new look

And it’s not because I don’t like change. There is just TOO much stuff going on on the page.

The most interesting thing about the blog, which is the main blog, gets maybe half the page width. The items that are taking up too much real estate are the fan posts and fan shots.

The stuff on the left hand side is okay. But fanposts like this one http://www.celticsblog.com/2008/10/26/646791/our-complex-society dominating a 1/3 of the pages width, is NOT why I come to celticsblog. Granted it’s just one post, but it still proves my point I think. Which is the reason I come to Celticsblog is because of the very knowledgeable people that are posting on the main blog. That area needs more prominence. Right that old feeling that Celticsblog had, is gone. IMO. My suggestion would be to loose the fanposts and fanshots widgets. Let people access them from the menu bar at the top of the page, if they want them.

Other annoyance, is the default avatar/icon that is used. Tired of seeing this dude in brown with his mouth hanging open. How about shamrock or something?

It sounds like joining SB Nation was a big deal for Celticsblog, but it kind of sucks to have a less useful and visually appealing page with the season almost upon us.

While I’m still going, I think part of the problem I have is that the page just looks generic. Like it has no personality. You can tell it is based off some template that every other sb nation blog likely uses. Then on top of that “genericness” the one thing that CB has always had going for it is the quality of it’s contributers. And in the new format, their work is visually minimized by having to share space with all the junk on the left and right.

Hope thing settle down, love CB, I used to check it serveral times a day. I already find myself checking it less, because the format turns me off.

Why Change?

I don’t particularly like the new change to SB Nation. Very generic site and too many anoying adds. It would be nice if Jeff would explain in detail why he made the change to SB nation. The cletic blog community doesn’t appear to have that small family feel it once had. I find that I won’t visit the site like I use to.

Undecided

I think that obviously it is an upgrade as far as the website goes and it will take a while to get used to. However I can absolutely echo the opinions of others in saying that I am not quite sure as to why the fanposts are different from the forum posts. They seem to be very the same thing yet are different as profile pictures, signatures, etc. are not displayed. I am definitely curious as to what the difference is…

I hope Jeff got a good price when he sold celtics blog to sbnation. He deserves it. he worked very hard at developing the blog and keeping us all informed.

As far as what SBNation has done with the site – CelticsBlog is not what it used to be. It has become second rate with a generic template and the writing has suffered. It is no longer easy to find stuff or see what the community is thinking with a listing of recent forum posts on the front page. Too many annoying ads as well. I am sick of being marketed to 24×7.

All in all – SBNation is disappointing. If it doesn’t improve I may be looking for another source of Celtic news …

I concur with meangreen that celticblog has lost its small family / community feel that Jeff developed so well.

Two small quibbles...

I’m not going to disagree with your sentiment, but will point out two inaccuracies:

1) The Forums are still linked on the front page (although they’re probably a little tougher to see / find.) The recent Forum Topics are located below the Fanposts; and

2) I haven’t noticed the quality of writing declining, because they’re the same authors as always. We picked up Jim Weeks from Celtics Bandwagon, and from time to time we’ll elevate posts from the Fanposts to the front page. The primary authors / contributors will still be Jeff, Steve, and FLCeltsFan, though (plus Jim.)

I would second Roy's question

regarding what you mean about the writing having ‘suffered.’

Always open to criticism and looking to make improvements here, but I’m not entirely sure what you mean by that, because I think most so far as I know, the roles of our writers haven’t changed from what they were four days ago.

on second thought

on second thought – I just looked around a little more and I gues SB Nation is pretty good. I found some of the areas that I liked to frequesnt in the past. I am just a homer I guess. I don’t like change.

Thanks Jeff for all you did to build Cletics Blog

thanks for the feedback everyone

keep in mind that this is not necessarily a finished product – if anything, we are going to take feedback from everyone and work as hard as we can to make sure needs are being met – it may not always be the perfect solution and it may not happen right away, but we’re doing our best to continue to advance this site and make it the best we can

understand that even if we didn’t move to SBN, we would have made major blog changes and upgrades anyway – this just positions us for different opportunities and I felt it was the best decision for both me and the blog community

I think the new site will grow on everyone – and we’ll keep working to make gradual improvements over time

again, we’ll keep working on making as many people happy as we can – it is our only goal really

improvements

blog has a better format than it did even earlier today so this initial post from Roy served its purpose of making the new CelticsBlog easier for us to navigate. So thanks for addressing the feedback.

With hopefully more changes to come...

The SBN guys have been working with the staff all day to come up with some some improvements to make this place a bit more user friendly. They should be implemented soon.

If you see him around, say thanks to Trei ("clockwerks") from the SBN team.

Jeff, the forum topic posts are too understated on the page. Need a bigger, easier to find list.

by CoachBo on Oct 29, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree with most of the above. The writing of Messrs. Clark, Weinman, etc are still solid it’s just harder to find since the main page is so cluttered. My main complaint is that the new Celticsblog is web 2.0 when a the majority of the audience is web 1.5. If we wanted to have a celtics facebook/my space we would.

The Real Large James

While I’m sure there’s much more money to be made through all the advertising that comes up here including the pearls of wisdom from Hugh Downs and the pop-up trailer of Changeling, a lot is lost in this now more typical, obviously more profit driven site. While some might call this "progress" I see it as the homogenization of a once uniquely driven and fan based site. The whole thing is on the verge of being swallowed up by other interests, topics, etc…Even the space for the actual content of the site has shrunk at the expense of a lot of secondary stuff. Sorry.

gotta agree

There may be less ads, but the ones you have are more prominent and much more annoying. Like the ever popular animated pop-up kind - hate that.

You now have a very cluttered batch of information on the front page. That extra white space that was on the old format helped to focus the eye on the info we wanted to read, now that is gone and the useful info has been squished in the middle surrounded by brightly colored animated nonsense.

I feel all of this encourages less participation due to having to wade through so much crap to read community posts.

What pop up are you guys getting?

For whatever reason, I’m immune. What browser are you using? Maybe switch to Firefox 3.0, if you’re not using it?

Congrats to everyone involved,

I know this was a big step for the Celticsblog staff and I’m happy for you guys…

It’s going to take a lot more exploring before I’m totally comfortable but I’m sure I’ll get there.

My one concern for the staff would be:

Do you feel as though the community aspect of CB will be lost in this leap?

by Jsaad on Oct 27, 2008 1:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Do you feel as though the community aspect of CB will be lost in this leap?

We’re actively talking about ways to prevent that from happening. That’s goal #1.

Actually this is awsome...

After a little research on SB nation and I’ve come to the conclusion that this is a huge leap for the writers on Celticsblog as the ratings will now go up. This is almost like a town show on the local cable channel getting picked up by TNT =).

I also have become a lot more comfortable with navigation. If you Click on “forums” it gives you the popular “recent posts” that have always been important to the CB community.

The “Forums” should maintain the same enthusiasm that they have always had while the “fanposts” will probably consist of trolls that will be squashed when noticed.

I am not worried about “double posts” (fanpost and Forum post) because…. well… everyone should just continue to go to the Forums! The only reason the Fanposts are on the front page is because it’s an SB requirement; that doesn’t mean we have to make it our main focus! Lets all just continue doing what we’ve always done and be happy for the CB staff for getting more exposer!

by Jsaad on Oct 27, 2008 1:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I like the format of the FanPosts

The feature of listing the “new” comments is really helpful when returning to the site after an absence, as well as them being highlighted in yellow, very efficient. Is there any way to incorporate similar features into the Recent Forum Topics as well?

by KJ33 on Oct 27, 2008 7:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Most likely not at this time...

Since the forums and front page aren’t bridged yet, that’s probably not possible to do yet. What you can do, though, is use the “Recent Posts” and “Updated Topics” options in your members menu, located on the forums page (http://forums.celticsblog.com). Recent Posts will tell you all the topics that have been updated since you last looked at a thread, and Updated Topics will tell you if any thread that you have posted in has been updated recently.

Probably 95% of my navigation is done through the “Recent Posts” option; I find it to be extremely helpful.

I have to say that it’s an end of an era. To see Golden State of Mind, SacTownRoyalty and all these other great blogs assimilate as well into the SBN borg was kinda disappointing.
The pleasure of browsing thru the blogs with your morning cup was in no small part due to the unique flavor of each of those blogs. It’s a shame that there was a collective buy in to this network, but I imagine the incentives were there. It’s unfair to ask sacrifices when you’ve all given us great writing and community over the years.

Still, to sift through Blog-a-Bull to Celticsblog to what have you, the only change you see is the color scheme…even the ads stay the same from site to site…it’s really generic and rather depressing. It reeks of corporate sponsorship…I feel like I’m reading an NBA.com blog! Obviously, thats not the case and the writing on this blog is wonderful…however I echo the thoughts of the other readers in that the feeling of community is a bit diluted at best.

I also echo the sentiment of the other readers that it is too busy by far, and I am visiting the site less and less, and instead relying on Reds Army, Loys Place and Perkisabeast.

The main lede articles by Jeff somehow blend into the Daily Babble and Fan Posts…they don’t quite stand out. While there may be ‘technically’ less ads it obviously seems more crowded to the users judging by the comments.

I’m sure people are glad the site is more flexible, it’ll allow more ‘things’ to happen/post etc. gadgets and doodads.
Call me old fashioned but I prefer the most basic and streamlined systems, the blog posts, and the forums. Truehoops design for instance is by far the most reader friendly blog out there.

Finally, I really doubt this, but I hope that linkage to some of the more eccentric blogs out there (coughperkisabeastcough) won’t stop because of any SBN content restrictions.

Anyhow I’ll quit my pooping on the parade. Congratulations on the move, I guess.

It hurts my feelings to be referred to as a borg; i have neither the bad-ass bionic eyeball, nor the phurious-phistfull-of-phaser that borg assimilated humanoids are equipped with. Instead I have to make due with ten un-enhanced and soon-to-be arthritic fingers, a jar of advil and a steady drip of dr. pepper.

A few things

In my opinion, I find the whole left side of the site to be unnecessary, I don’t use any of it, I am sure some of it is SBNation mandated, but I never find myself using any of the links over there. The poll, however, should definitely be moved up to a more relevant position, it’s a little buried right now. The ads don’t bother me, except the one on the right side being above the latest forum topics, that is a big annoyance to me. I also agree with someone else who said it should be “Recent Forum Posts” instead of “Recent Forum Topics” or perhaps have both. I find that using posts rather than topics weeds out the less “interesting” threads, and kind of works as a recent topic poster by itself.

I don’t feel like I need the standings or schedule on the page, I get that info elsewhere and it’s so far down I wouldn’t look for it here. I understand the idea is for the site to be a one stop shop for all things Celtics, but personally I don’t need it. Same thing goes for the “Roster” section, it’s just a space filler, and distracts you from what you are looking for. The team news is odd as well, aren’t these all things that should be already addressed within the main section of the blog? A lot of the new sections aren’t delivering any information, just distracting me from it.

Much like everyone else I hate fanposts, don’t understand the need for them, they just undermine the forum topics. I am also not a fan of having dual identities on the site, one for SBNation and one for Celticsblog, even though I have the same name and everything, the two don’t seem connected whatsoever. I think being reminded of the presence of a new entity (SBNation) is one thing that creates a very unfamiliar feel, I would like to be the same person, and just log in as such. In that same vain, what is the difference between the “Featured Stories” and “Recent Posts?” They seem to be the exact same thing just named differently, thus creating even more confusion. Same thing with the fanshots, there’s about five different sections now of things that used to just be in the forums or articles in the main blog.

Obviously these are just my personal preferences, but the switch has definitely been a difficult, and not really welcomed one. I definitely hope all the old users come back and aren’t too put off by the new site, because this is a great community. Celticsblog is definitely my favorite website and I have decided to stick with it rather than abandon it, which I was very close to doing. I am sure this was a careful decision to switch, and with all the negative feedback I am sure the next decision will be even more careful, just please make it no time soon, and much less drastic. I think a basic rule of thumb for websites and delivering content in general is that less is more, and the new site definitely would benefit from that line of thinking.

by Celtic on Oct 28, 2008 3:00 PM EDT reply actions   2 recs

Well if the goal is to get honest feedback. I don’t like the new site. I’ve been on celticsblog for 4 yrs and this is the first time its change has caused me to consider not using it anymore. I really liked it’s uniqueness and now it feels like a carbon copy of all those other sites. The first time I went on it, this verizon ad kept popping up everywhere. In fact the first thing I see is two ads. The loss of “recent forum posts” from the front page is very major. It feels like someone remodeled my house, made it look like all the other ones on the block, put a couple neon billboards in front and took away my living room. That’s just my honest opinion, which I believe was being asked for. I’m sure the move wasn’t made blindly. It must have been financially beneficial to some people and that’s obviously they’re prerogative, but even when Tom sold myspace, he was still able to keep it basically the same and unique. I feel like espn or nba.com just bought celticsblog. It would be nice to go back to the old site, but I’m thinking that ship has sailed. I feel like a lot of posters are hesitant to sign up for SBN just to voice their opinions here. We might have lost a lot pf people with the switch. Would it have been possible to poll the blog before having made such a drastic move?

by johnnyrondo on Oct 30, 2008 6:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The goal is definitely honest feedback, and thank you for yours...

One thing: in terms of “recent forum posts”, they’re still there, on the left. Those are the most recent posts in the forum, there’s just a slight lag before they’re posted to the front page. SBN is working on that issue, but those links are still to the most recent topics posted in.

Thanks again for the comments.

by odacrem on Oct 30, 2008 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

3 things you can do to Make the new feature less intrusive

1) Edit your SBnation account settings to not show avatars (gets rid of the brown dofus with his mouth hanging out avatar)

2) With your screen resolution set to 1024 × 768, select the widescreen view for the blog (can be found upper left hand corner.) This widens the actual blog area, and pushes the advertisement, fanshots and fan posts off the screen a bit. Those items will then only have half of their content on the screen.

3) Increase the size of your fonts in your browser. (Ctrl and + at the same time.) This makes the fonts big enough to finally push those annoying items on the right side, completely off the page.

With these settings I enjoy the content of the site, without the stuff that bugs me.
