Patrick O'Bryant Starts Strong, C's Fall
Some tape-delay first half thoughts:
- Starters couldn't start out better. Picking up right where they left off. No surprise there.
- O'Bryant was billed as lazy and passive but sure looked aggressive tonight. 6 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks in 15 minutes (first half) is a nice start.
- Eddie House looks like a point guard bringing the ball up (finally!)
- Nice early look for Miles, but as expected, he's not nearly as explosive as he's been.
- Second team (again, as expected) was sloppy at times on both ends of the floor.
- Scal looks like, ...well, Scal.
- Ok, its official. Bill Walker is already a fan favorite. First the alley oop, then the tomahawk. Wow.
2nd half thoughts:
-
Mostly ugly, boring basketball in the 2nd half.
-
At least we got to see Miles finish an alley oop. Some of that explosion is still there at least.
-
Liked seeing Tony take it aggressively to the hoop. (11 pts. 4 ast, 2 steals, 2 blocks)
-
Only 4 minutes for JR Giddens? Is he really that far behind that he can't get in a preseason game?
-
Pruitt didn't stand out much.
-
O'Bryant's final line: 10 pt. 8 reb. 3 blks - if he can play anything like that consistently, then we'll have no problem at the backup center spot.

Scal, Scal, Scal… You looked so promising with your first shot of the night, like you had a spring in your step. Only then you put up some real bricks. Then you made some very nice steals in a row only to turn them over again with your very next passes. I heard Tommy and Mike go on about how you were making most of your last second shots in the set plays for you, only for me to be baffled why you took one of the last shots in the game.
It may be a very sad day in Boston, but I think you may be close to the outer edge of the roster. Please prove me wrong Scal!!! :)

Jeff, can’t agree with you about House looking “like a point guard bringing the ball up.” Repeatedly, when there was any pressure, it was Tony Allen who would dribble it up, and then he’d pass it to House after crossing half-court. House didn’t do much to set up his claim as the backup point guard.
Pruitt, on the other hand, had far fewer minutes, but looked better at the position. Particularly on defense.
good notes above, jeff. i got to see walker- he’s strong- looks like a mini-powe-think he will play like powe too. pob was not bad- thin, can be pushed off the boards, but he was crashing, threw down a nice dunk, and he is long. tony looked good- no dummie plays, no overdribbles, and managed to bring the ball up court in good shape. hard to say much about miles- no explosion yet, seemed to play within himself and did not stick out in a minus fashion. he definitely looked better than scal. and tho scal hustled and you want him to succeed so much, he is so vulnerable out there and just seems outathletecized (probably not a word, but you get my drift).
Right now, Scal in a landslide as the #16 guy that needs to or has to be cut. Pruitt didn’t show me much. He brings the ball down quickly and then we aren’t seeing much in regard to scoring, assists, getting the offense going. JR only 4 min.? WTF This is exhibition. We know what we don’t have with Scal, why aren’t we playing JR the 14 and Scal 4? JR and Pruitt right now would be by 14-15 guys on the Celts.
I’m more intoned with seeing what the youngsters bring (including OB) than how many minutes starters play or even if we win or lose.

Wow, I thought Pruitt played very well in the time he was given. He consistently motored the ball up the court, and had his head up all the while. He had one beautiful floater in the lane, one nice interior bounce pass to Scal (who promptly fumbled it out of bounds) and that gorgeous, beyond-half-court alley opp to Walker. He also pretty much turned Lou Williams into a passer down the stretch of the 4th with his defense (and Williams was torching House).
I thought Scal pretty much single-handedly cost us the game down the stretch. After all this time, the man still can’t play within his role.

As a long time Scal supporter I have to concede…he just can’t shoot. We already know what else he isn’t. If he can’t hit the open J he shouldn’t be in rotation. One game is too quick but this is continuation of last year. I thought he was the “mental” guy. He’s got no confidence shooting.
I agree with other bloggers here, Jeff. I thought Pruitt looked pretty good in his few minutes. Eddie was fine as well bringing ball up (under double team pressure ball SHOULD go to T Allen) but Williams beat him up. That kid and T Young looked very good for 76ers.
Very encouraged by T Allen, POB, B Walker and our man Leon. Big Baby was sloppy with ball.
Bill Walker moved very well on D. Giddens…who knows. Several games yet to see him. We can’t hope that all make it. He did make the shuffle pass for Walker’s slam.
I thought Pruitt looked pretty good last nite. Some good passes, some good defense. I’ve been a Scal’s supporter, but I don’t see him helping this team. I don’t know his contract situation, but I see him as #16 on the roster. Also didn’t think BBD had a good showing. He could also be #16 because he’s free at the end of the season and if it comes down to him and Leon (also free) for the future it has to be Leon. I see one or the other going into the future on this team.
Pruit didn’t make mistakes but he didn’t really stand out to me. O’Bryant was great while he was out there. His arms are long and he seems to have great hands- he finished that alley oop with one hand. I hope he maintains the intensity because he definitely has talent. Walker looked very good, Big Baby was very sloppy and appears to have not improved at all. Scal was Scal, enough said!
