KG Suspended
Via the Herald:
Celtics forward Kevin Garnett has been suspended one game without pay by the league for his role in Saturday night’s scuffle with the Bucks in Milwaukee.
Garnett struck Bucks center Andrew Bogut in the face with 3:58 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Celtics' 102-97 win at the Bradley Center.
The suspension was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA executive vice president of basketball operations.
In addition, Bogut’s foul that was committed on Garnett has been upgraded to a Flagrant Foul Penalty One.
Garnett will serve his suspension tomorrow when the Celtics host the New York Knicks at TD Banknorth Garden.
This, to me, is bogus. It seems like the league is more concerned with sending KG a message about the bad press received due to the Jose Calderon incident, than it is with KG's conduct here. If the league is going to suspend players every time one of them makes contact with another player above the shoulders, there aren't going to be too many eligible players left.
Meanwhile, there's news out of Phoenix that Shaq isn't likely to be suspended for his takedown of Rodney Stuckey, seen here. Anti-Celtics bias? We report, you decide.

Well now, KG is a villain! Welcome to the Celtics!
The league hears what people say. The Calderon thing, the Hawks series…now what are people going to say. To quote KG, “What can you say now?” LOL. How about what a bunch of BS, for starters.
And I don’t remember Bogut getting a foul on the play other than a technical (which he deserved) so I’m not sure how his “foul” could be upgraded. He actually deserved an offensive foul for warding off with his off-arm. Too bad the incompetent referees didn’t make that initial call; we might have avoided all this ridiculousness.

Shaq’s move was certainly more violent and dangerous, and consistency is important, but as a standalone issue the KG suspension is justifiable. It stinks, but it is justifiable.
I mean, he did slap Bogut in the mouth after the play was over.

To me, I don’t think KG should have been suspended. The technical foul was enough. For Shaq, I don’t think it warranted a flagrant 2. Yes, he hit him hard, but the size difference between the 2 men makes it a lot worse than it really was. Oh well, looks like we get to see a lot of Leon tomorrow night against the Knicks, which is a perfect game for him.

Hobbs IS RIGHT
Hopefully last time I need to use that as a Subject Title.
We’ve turned into a politically correct nation without a backbone to really be able to speak our mind, show emotion, be competitive, be angry in the heat of the battle, without being looked down upon and suggested we get counseling.
Now this same mindset has spread onto the NBA Basketball court. Good lord, in Hockey that would not even be considered contact. Technical foul? Maybe, but to me it did not even justify that. If I have to blame an NBA player it is Ron “Crazy Man” Artest who started all this overreaction with his complete meltdown on the court in Detroit a few years ago. Man I can’t stand that guy.
Wonder what the Larry Bird – Dr J choking incident would bring in terms of suspension these days?

I can describe it
Nothing really …..just a split second natural reaction to getting an inadvertent elbow to the mouth. After the split second of a human reaction of self defense he neither charged at Bogut, nor he did not take another swing. He also did not have to be restrained and no more incidence occurred throughout the game. If you can’t distinguish between losing control of your emotions to the point you charge somebody and strike them with a closed fist (or attempt to) and what happened in this case then something is wrong with the person who made such a judgement and the person who agrees with the judgement

i can’t even believe that even qualifies as a scuffle the league has no business reviewing and changing refs decisions especially since they used the replay if they didn’t agree with it they should have explained to the refs why and left it at that undermining refs authority makes no sense in the long run because what happens when teams start challenging calls after games why they pick out this one and ignore the countless questionable calls we’ve already seen is beyond me

It's a fair decision
Bogut unintentionally hit Garnett in the face; KG intentionally hit Bogut back. In the face. That’s not something the league can let slide, and you can bet it would levy the same penalty against, say, Patrick O’Bryant had he done the same thing.

Shocking...
… coming from a Magic fan. I’m pretty sure you weren’t calling for a suspension last season when Howard took a swipe at Rondo.

Good to see you around the site, Ben (albeit in the midst of some crossfire here)
but figured I’d try to detail to the point Roy brings up: If I recall correctly, D12 had the ball (after a rebound?) on the baseline in the direction of the right corner, and when Rondo attempted to poke the ball away form him, Howard threw out a closed fist in the direction of the point guard’s head, either barely grazing him or not connecting at all (can’t remember because I’ve tried real hard to wipe the memories of that game – notably Hedo’s buzzer-beating game-winning trey – out of mind). I remember thinking that had Howard gotten him square in the head, it would have been a major problem with Raj’s health and Dwight’s status with the league office.
As you know, I’m a big Dwight fan, but I can remember being rather nonplussed about that particular bit of behavior. That said, I can’t exactly cop to being the world’s most objective observer in that instance. To that end, if you can find a Magic fan who recalls the game, perhaps between his recounting of the incident and mine, you’d have something close to the truth :-D
Similarly, I’ve remained an observer most of the way through this discussion thus far. Hope you’re enjoying the start to the season and looking forward to chatting you up about some hoops babble – advanced stats, Jameer Nelson, who knows what’s next? – sooner rather than later. It’s been too long.

What if it wasn’t unintentional? Guess it is ok to hit as long as it LOOKS unintentional.
by NoraG1 on Nov 17, 2008 8:23 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That is what I don’t understand. If Bogut’s swipe on KG was unintentional or inadvertant, why was he assessed a flagrant foul?
Shoot why don’t we assess Rondo a flagrant foul after the fact for accidentally hitting Pierce in the head? I thought that was unnecessary and excessive!! LOL

Ridiculous
Another example of the pussification (sorry to the mods if this word is inappropriate) of the NBA and American society. Even if KG intended to slap Bogut, he doesn’t know that Bogut didn’t hit him purposefully or not (which is why Bogut didn’t deserve the T). It’s a completely natural reaction. The T was the appropriate sanction. In the HOU-PHX game, Shaq came over and started pushing people down, yet no suspension there.

Keloids “appears” to be the exact person I am talking about. He has the right to say on here what he wants and as long as he plays by the rules. However Keloids interpretation, viewpoint, and twisting of Grovers words (and multiple postings on various blogs) is indication to me that further dialogue with him is a waste of my time for further serious conversation with him. So Grover my humble advice to you would be to let it go …….as will I…… Peace

Don't sleep on the Knicks...
They’re 6-4, and Zach Randolph is actually playing up to his talent level. They’re not a great team, but I can’t say that they’re appreciably worse than Indiana, Milwaukee, or Denver.

Maybe I'm the only one...
But from the following view, it shows KG wasn’t even looking at Bogut when he threw his arms away… so where is the evidence behind KG’s “intent” to hit Bogut in the face? Seems to me it wasn’t anymore intentional or targeted than Bogut hitting KG in the first place… :

by RebusRankin on Nov 17, 2008 9:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Eh
Whatever…the league is obviously arbitrary and there’s next to nothing you can do about it. At the time a few people thought it was unfair that Bogut got tossed while KG remained in the game. So this does kind of even things out, maybe giving KG a little time to sit down and think about where things have been going wrong with the team.

Bogut was not tossed for this incident
It was his 2nd technical which is an automatic ejection. He received the same penalty(in the game) as KG.
by KJ33 on Nov 17, 2008 10:08 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Pretty harmless foul
I watched the replays, and it doesn’t look like KG was intentionally made contact with Bogut’s head.
I have no doubt that KG was going at it with Bogut, but watching the actual play(s) I don’t see how the suspension is deserved.
This wasn’t like Rondo getting decapitated by Marvin Williams or Ray getting pushed into the seats by Odom.
If you’re going to let teams play physically, you can’t start calling chippy fouls down the stretch.
by LuckyNumber07 on Nov 17, 2008 10:18 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
did you guys watch the video
shaq made a play ON THE BALL guys. that’s why there’s no suspension. in fact, a flagrant 2 is very very questionable imo.
meanwhile, kg deliberately smacked bogut.
i mean, is there really even a question here?

That Stuckey risked injury. At least KG was picking on someone his own size!

Absolutely stunning.
I thought it was bad enough when Bogut hit KG on the head, and there was no call (actually, there was — foul on Garnett), but this is completely uncalled for.
Like someone pointed out, it is also extremely entertaining how they upgrade the uncalled foul on Bogut to Flagrant 1 (the verdict on the play was personal foul Garnett, double technical).
by kozlodoev on Nov 17, 2008 11:42 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Exactly, if Bogut was so innocent and it was ‘unintentional’ why are they making adjustments to the foul? I think Bogut should be suspended as well. I know he was ejected but he was not ejected for that incident he was ejected for getting 2 techs. KG should not be punished because Bogut got a tech earlier in the game.

stern wants your attention
the great legion of celtics fans better behave when stern is in the house, or should i say the garden. the great, dearly beloved nba commish doesnt want to be booed or else your team will pay dearly for it. remember when after reggie lewis’ death he refused to take his salary off the books? you better treat him better out there or else, he will unleash his minions on our team then we can say goodbye to repeating this year or the next 20 years!!!! harharharbwahahaha!!!!!

Reyquila
Garnett is not above the law. He got the supension cause he has been a little wild with his antics lately and the league sent him a message before it was forced to get even tougher with him. I hope Garnett gets it before it gets worse.
by Reyquila on Nov 18, 2008 8:04 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
There’s a simple explanation for this suspension: Stu Jackson is an idiot. He always was, is now and always will be an idiot. He screwed up as supervisor of officials so they mercifully (for the league and the fans) took that away from him. Now his remaining area of responsibility is disciplinary matters of this type.
This isn’t nearly as dumb as the playoff suspension of Amare Stoudemire a few years ago. At least KG actually touched Bogut.
Once can only hope that with the economic downturn, Stu Jackson is gone after the NBA’s next round of layoffs.
by Brickowski on Nov 18, 2008 8:10 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Upside?
While I generally disagree with the decision, I see a possible benefit: Remember how well — aggressive, smart, etc. — Rondo played last year when KG was out? Maybe he’ll do the same thing again and remember how he’s supposed to play the game. Hopefully. Might even be able to say the same thing about Perk. Hopefully.

fair or unfair, what happens to the refs? i am tired of seemingly arbitrary calls. i have noticed a lot of world b free calls when the shooter kicks out and the call goes against the defender. with 3 refs you would think 1 of them sees the kickout.

Officiating is No Better
Nazzbo, it baffles me as well, along with all of the other bad calls. The league needs video replay. The current crop of officials is not up to the task of calling a game correctly without it.

I remember the swipe Howard took on rondo and when it happend I clamored that Howard should have been suspended. No place for that type of conduct. Nobody is above the law.

Did Howard get suspended? Part of my problem and Doc also mentioned it in his interview today is that the inconsistency with calls and suspensions.
by NoraG1 on Nov 18, 2008 4:12 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
What Howard did was much worse — it was a closed first — but he wasn’t suspended. Shaq takes somebody’s head off — and wasn’t, in my opinion, going for the ball — and he wasn’t suspended. KG taps Bogut in the face, and he’s gone. I don’t see how that’s equitable.
