Do we need to get a back-up point guard?

We heard it all last year before the season even started.  "Can Rajon Rondo lead this team to a title?"  We all know what the answer to that was.  Now the big question in my opinion is, "can we win it all again without a true back-up point guard?"

Personally I think we need to at least make an attempt at getting a back-up in here for the simple fact that if Rondo goes down for a substantial amount of time there could be some problems.  I love Eddie House and he did work on his ball handling in the off season but it takes away too much of his threat to score when he's playing the point.  Not a true point guard.  I also love Gabe Pruitt and he will be a very solid point guard some day for this team but I don't know how much they can rely on him night in and night out if needed.  I like Tony Allen but he scares me when he is playing his true position!  TA is a good fill in for a few minutes here and there but I just can't see him playing hard core minutes at the point.  And last but not least, Sam Cassell just never figured out that we brought him here to DISTRIBUTE the basketball first, and then look to shoot second.  He is a great asset for the younger guys and keeps the team loose but I really don't want to see too much of him on the floor.

I know we have heard about Ray Allen playing the point as well but it's similar to the situation with Eddie House.  You need Ray to shoot the ball where he is at his best so that won't work either.

We have to be realistic about the fact that teams now have had a year to piece together a more solid game plan to slow down the Celts.  They are all trying to form a blueprint to beat them and some teams have even said they are trying to model themselves after Boston.  If you think about it, the Celtics were pieced together like an expansion team last year.  The organization didn't even know what was going to happen, never mind what the rest of the NBA thought.  All you heard from other players in the league was how we haven't won anything and we had to prove ourselves.  Well, we did all that and then some.  This is why it is even more important to look at getting a back-up point guard.  You might not find one to light up the box score but you must try and get a guy who can distribute and not hurt you with turnovers.

I know I am going to get crushed from people out there for saying this but I think if Danny AInge could get his hands on Stephon Marbury the Celtics would elevate to yet another level.  Before everyone starts to yell at me I want you to know that I actually despise this guy off the court, but unfortunately since professional sports became a "business" I want him bad on this team.  He can still play some good ball and if you give him the Corey Dillon treatment for a year then the risk vs. reward is in the reward favor.  Marbury wants to play and wants to win a championship.  Neither of which will happen in NY.  If they implemented a zero tolerance policy on him he is worth the risk.  I think he would know his place and just play.  If Marbury is not an option behind Rondo then they need to bring in a veteran point guard.  Watching Rondo getting helped up every time he drives the lane is getting painful.  There is only so much pounding the little dude can take throughout the course of a season before he starts to break down.

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

good thoughts

though I’m against the Starbury thing – I would have considered it before we brought in Eddie and Sam, but not now

I’d rather give more minutes to Pruitt (deserved or not)

Starbury? Really?

No offense intended, but the same arguments you make against playing Cassell, House, and Allen at the point apply to Marbuy 100x over. Plus the dude has been a locker room cancer everywhere he’s gone.

If the Celts decide that this is an area of concern… they need to keep looking.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

The team needs House. He’s the only high quality jump shooter the team has outside of the Big Three. The offense needs him to create breathing space for everyone else.

Hmmm...

I say, give Gabe Pruitt a chance. If they won’t, sign a player from the European leagues who are NBA free agents. At least they would be in shape.

Second to None!

Position Neutral Creators

A team needs a certain number of creators on the floor at all times, or the offense stagnates. The Celtics have three; Rondo, Pierce, and Garnett. As long as one of them is on the floor, with propper spacing, the offense should be fine.

That is why Gabe Pruitt needs to be on the floor instead of Tony Allen. Tony creates for himself, but kills spacing and offensive flow. Gabe might not be as good overall (maybe he is, we just do not know), but in the team concept he is a better fit.

Injuries

Certainly, if Rondo is hurt for any length of time that is bad news for the Celtics. The same is true of of the other starters as well, not only on the C’s, but on pretty much any team with championship aspirations. If there is no dropoff from the starter to the backup, then the team is either bad or badly coached (or, much less likely, insanely loaded with talent). So the argument that we need to upgrade the backup in case he gets hurt doesn’t hold – they can’t acquire starter quality backups at every position, especially not to play a backup role. Marbury is not the answer. He is also a reluctant distributor, and is one whose name is conspicuously absent from any discussion on the topic of “selfless team players” unless proceeded by the word “not.”

Celtics are deep enough at PG for now

Rondo’s energetic, House is capable, Pruitt looked good in the preseason, and Sam Cassell should be fresh enough when the time comes. They’re set as far as I’m concerned.

Starbury

I actually think that most people are wrong about him. Starbury didn’t do well with other teams I have to agree with that but theres two reasons why i belive it wouldn’t be the same if he came to boston. One Starbury wants a title and this is one of the best places to find it not only that but he doesn’t have much options. Also He use to work with KG back in his Timberwolves day I think KG can keep Starbury under control. So I say if we have the money for it we should go ahead and buy starbury and if you want a saftey net then only have a One Year contract.

the backup PG

I don’t like Ray in that situation at all… he’s been a turn over machine recently, and never worse than when he’s got to put the ball on the floor more than a couple times without driving directly to the basket.

Eddie can get it up fine, unless they trap him too aggressively, which you all know already.

My solution in the playoffs (when Doc was still thinking Sam was a positive contribution on the floor), was to just let PP bring it up. That wouldn’t work all year, and it’s definitely not a solid Plan B, but it is something. He doesn’t get flustered and the guys who guard him generally aren’t going to be in his face until half court anyway.

you guys are missing it

yo yall are crazy man, the last thing the celtics need at back up point guard is a true one, think about the players coming off of the bench in boston, they are all defensive minded guys. If the celtics were to bring in a pass first guy, the offense in the second quarter would sputter i mean who would this point guard have the luxury of passing the ball to? leone powe, big baby davis, tony allen? brian scalabrine? yeah they would be real threats on offense. They need a player that will keep the opposition honest. House isn’t even a good shooter anymore so i agree the celts need a better player but pruitt can become that guy with experience and the coaching staff is fuckin up because liek detroit starting johnson…. its a win win situation, you get the guy experience and your guaranteed a playoff spot anyway. maybe he could develop into a rotation player and you didn’t ssacrifice anything for it.

Let it be...

The only position that I feel this teams still lacks is that offense in the SF position. If you notice the stats for our team, in every other game, there is NO production from the bench. One game Powe/Tony/House will put up double digits, then the next game they all 3 are in single digit stats with awful FG%.
I like Tony Allen playing SG, but he would be better if there were other shooters on the floor with him. That’s why we need a 3 point shooting SF. And Scal won’t cut it. I know our options are slim to none but we need someone…I am desperate enough to say look at Bonzi Wells. He at least could work with Tony Allen to put up points and play rough D.
One other trade that I would look at would be for a shooting PF. Recently I read that Brian Cook was wanting out of Orlando. A trade swap of Cook or Scal would be nearly identical contracts, and we could throw in either BBD or Pruitt…or a draft pick. Whatever.
Brian Cook’s range would spread the floor, getting rid or BBD/Pruitt would free up a roster spot for an addition to our SF position….or we could add McDyess, doubtful, so I say go for that SF in either Bonzi Wells or wait for one to be cut before February.

Or bench needs offense other than just Eddie House hitting 3’s. A playoff bench with Sam Cassell, Tony Allen, Bonzi Wells, Brian Cook, Pat,0/Powe would be awesome for the Big 3 to rest.
