Food Options Around The Garden
"As much as it pains us to say it, your best bet for eating before a game is a trip to tourist flytrap Quincy Market. Sure, it's full of chain restaurants and you may have to fight off a mime or two, but, with food ranging from chowder to Japanese noodle bowls (not to mention pizza and burgers), it's a good bet for feeding a group of people with fussy eating requirements. Besides, some of the chains (Wagamama) are legitimately good places to eat, and you can rub the head of the statue of Red Auerbach for good luck before heading to your game. (That may not work for Bruins games.) Plus, there's breakdancing buskers. And to get to the Garden you will have to pass Boston's City Hall, the World's Ugliest Building."

People keep ramming on the tourist flytrap tune, but I like Quincy Market. Of course, you must be crazy to sit and eat inside, but there is plenty of good stuff you can grab and then wander to one of the nearby parks.
If you’d prefer a little more formal setting which involves sitting on a table, there are plenty of good and not terribly expensive places in the North End.

I wish I could go to a Celtics home game!
My extended family is near Boston and I have been to Quincy Market a couple of times. I live in CA though and I am only in MA when the weather is nice out so there are never basketball games going on.

Absolutely Inaccurate
As a season ticket holder, I can say that it is absolutely 100 percent false that “…your best bet for eating before a game is a trip to tourist flytrap Quincy Market.”
When looking for places to eat before a game, I wouldn’t even think of Quincy Market. For a sit down meal around the Garden, you have the Fours and Boston Beer Works, not too mention many others. For a quick bite, your best bet is Halftime Pizza (right across from the Garden). The line may look long, but the service is unbelievable and you’ll get your pizza.
As a native Bostonian and long-time season ticket holder, I can’t begin to write how irate I was to read that comment above.
The only accurate statement in the post above is, “…you can rub the head of the statue of Red Auerbach for good luck before heading to your game.”
As for the comment, “…and to get to the Garden you will have to pass Boston’s City Hall, the World’s Ugliest Building.” Actually, just get off the T or park at Haymarket or North Station, and you won’t need to pass it all.
Not to mention anywhere in the North End, about a 5 minute walk, which has the best restaurants in the city.
