Deja Vu - Playoff Type Win
Just like the first round of the playoffs, the athletic Hawks chased down offensive rebounds, got out on the break, and played aggressive defense all night long. The Celtics, however, were up to the task and put the game away with some clutch plays in the final minutes.
- Remember when the knock on KG was that he wasn't clutch? Yeah.
- Much respect due to the Hawks. Great effort all night.
- Bench was quiet once again. Then again, so was theirs.
- No shots were falling for Ray from outside (1-8)

I would certainly love to see the Hawks/C's again....
..in the postseason. That seems to be a fun series to watch. (and a scary one, too)
Just think last year if Bibby had his game going…..

the starting 5 had icewater in their veins at the end of the game and played to win. so did joe johnson, but we had the 5. ray played joe pretty good for 3 quarters. perk was a killer with the blocks. and if only the refs knew what they were doing, it would be even more fun . the hawks need a big center- other than that they’re terrific.

Ray must hate that building
Nothing seems to drop for him there.
Glad the C’s were finally able to overcome the wet spots, shot clock malfunctions, and horrible officiating (both ways tonight) in that arena.

That was a gutwrencher!
I never thought that a game like that in the regular season only 25 games in could have me feeling similar to what I did in the playoffs. Better to get that monkey off the back now than later. Nice hard fought win C’s. Tough shooting night by Ray for the first time in a while. He’s due I guess. Tough night for PP too, but he played great down the stretch with that bum knee. Those are the type of wins that give you confidence as a team that you can win even when you aren’t totally in sync, and also tell everyone else you are still the champs. I sure hope Cleveland has to play them though and not us. Scary athletic team.

They’re only scary at home when they get the calls. What did the Celtics shoot from beyond the arc in the first half? 1-12 or something like that.
The Hawks did not impress me.

Two games
Two games this year, two down to the wire. Our house and their house. Sure we should have been up by a few more had shots fallen better, but you can’t discount the fact that they are a tough physical team and in both games gave us more than we wanted and had a chance to win them both. Not many teams can say that vs. this team. They deserve a little credit…

Hawks vs. C's
As a Hawks fan i thought we played the C’s well tonite. Refs made calls both ways. And maybe Brickowski forgot we played the C’s tough in Boston. earlier this year. Anyway I thought it was a great game and im still proud of the way my Hawks played the world champs. The Hawks have played well at home this year, tonight was just our second loss at home. I look forward to battling the C’s aka world champs again. And id also like to send my congrats to all the C’s fans. As always you are the class franchise in the NBA. Heres hoping you all have a merry christmas, and congrats again for a good win. Go Hawks!

Good execution down the stretch
props to Hawks fan for gracious comment; nice to hear
good execution by C’s during last few minutes; credit Doc for not calling timeout
good D for most of the game; sluggish on rebounding and loose balls
not much flow to the offense; few transition baskets; few assists; give Hawks credit
I don’t think the blown calls were much of a factor; we weren’t as physical/aggressive around the basket as usual; Pierce missed or had blocked 4 layups; those are usually and one’s
I think PP and KG both have minor knee issues; gritty win for the team
a few issues: TA forcing the action when it wasn’t there; needed more patience; -9; BBD one rebound in 13 minutes; and prefer Gabe on Flip Murray
3 at home and then Christmas in LA

I only saw the second half. Was it my imagination or did all the Celts except KJ just seem a bit slow tonight?
From botched rotations they usually would make, to just being a step behind, it seemed to me the Celts weren’t reacting as quickly as they normally do.

Same thing last year in those Atlanta road playoff games. Atlanta uses its speed to really mess up the Celtics but that works a lot more on their home court. At the new Garden, the Celtics can control the tempo of the game.

The Celtics-Hawks game in Boston is ancient history. Tonight was a different game. No offense to Hawks fans, but I call ’em like I see ’em, and the Hawks did not impress.
And yes, they got significant help from the officials. Let’s start with Josh Smith taking about six steps to the basket and then getting the benefit of a phantom foul call.

The one thing that stuck out to me, and really got me riled, was the handchecks they were calling on Ray Allen while he guarded Joe Johnson. Then on the other end we didn’t see the same calls for the Celtics.
But that’s life on the road; C’s have gotten homecooking this year as well.

as a hawks fan looking for the other point of view...
your post makes little sense.
we lost by three points. we lost by one point in boston. we came from behind based on unbelievable three pointers last time. we were winning this time and we missed a lot of open shots this time.
the officials….i was at the game. I will not avoid my homerism if i type too long but i would say at the least, they did not lean toward the hawks. I mean paul pierce fell down and they called an officials’ time out instead of a travel to check the sweat on the floor.
in the end, i think the Celtics hit that last free throw that joe missed which is why you are the better team.
I just really do not enjoy losing to y’all….at all.

You may have a point, although my “homerism” doesn’t think so, but that’s a good example. They showed the replay of the Pierce slip and it actually wasn’t a travel. His front foot slipped but he was able to keep his back foot planted- which is why it ended up all twisted under him- and was able to put the ball on the floor before he moved his back foot. Then he called the time out. Pierce could have seriously hurt himself in keeping that foot planted, which would not have been the best thing for the C’s in the long run, but he did keep it planted.

KG was HOT
Down the stretch and at someone in the stands. I believe it was KG who said it best last year, Atlanta wanted it. They got it.
Great game to watch though. Great effort by both teams. I kind of hope the Hawks can pass Orlando in the standings (assuming we keep Cleveland at bay). I think they’ll be the toughest second round opponent; I just assume have Cleveland deal with them.

KG did come up big
yes, Hawks are tough in Atlanta
they’re good in transition, both offense and defense; they’ve got more speed and youth at the wings
we didn’t turn the ball over that much; but when they got it in transition, they often had good looks
in contrast, Celts almost never had numbers, or multiple passes leading to an easy bucket; a few Rondo drives up the gut, but that’s about it
turns into a half-court game; fortunately, we’re better at that than almost anyone; better players, better execution; it just makes for a more grinding game, and more patience is required; we finally showed the patience at the end of the game, and got the right looks
hard to tell the bench to hustle on the one hand and be patient at the other end, but that is often what is required in playoff style basketball, especially on the road; at home, we’ll still blow them out by 25

Good quote from KG
I found this quote by KG in a Globe article after the game. Pretty much sums up the Celtics this year:
“We are motivated,” Garnett said. “We don’t circle one game on the calendar, we circle them all.”

good quote, indeed
I’m tired of this “we’ve got a target on our backs” mentality
It’s exactly the opposite. Every other team has a target on their backs
we’re on offense, not on defense
reminds me of the line from Witness when Harrison Ford tells the corrupt police chief, “No, you’ve got it wrong. I’m coming after you.”
That should be the Celtics mentality.

Solid win against a good team. If the C’s had set the tone out of the box, i.e. controlled the glass, I don’t think the Hawks would have been nearly so confident throughout. There’s no denying the that the Hawks are a good team. The C’s need to improve bench production in order to ensure continued dominance. But man… 24-2… I’m just soaking up the feeling! _

Praise for Atl;anta
Celts are where they are because they are the best team but all avid fans should agree on this – Let someone else take the Hawks. They are a handful. They did not replace though in my opinion Childress.
Who was KG going at it with behind the C’s basket in 2nd half? Those fools probably won the game for us. KG is always in need of and in search of the energy of madness and someone back there had him amped up.

Agreed
I was listening to Felger, Tanguay and Spears after the game last night (don’t ask me why) and Gary finally made a point I could agree with: the Hawks just might be the third best team in the East behind the C’s and the Cavs. Orlando is a good team but I haven’t seen then play with the fire the hawks play with. I have nothing but good things to say about the Hawks, what is not to like about a young team that prides themselves on defense.
As for the rivalry I think we are playing a game of semantics here. It will never be a Boston-NY or a Celts-LAL rivalry, there’s no history. But when I first looked at the schedule this fall I circled three 08 games I need to see: Cavs, Hawks and Lakers. So this may not be a classic rivalry but it might be akin to a Sox-Rays rivarly, you know but sub Pedro and Edwin for KG and ZaZa

Bench: Pruitt
The c’s need to give Pruitt more time on the floor. Our bench is clearly in strugglesville right now and they have much difficulty generating offense. While he adjusts he can have another playmaker, like Pierce or Ray on the court, but gradually as Pruitt gets more comfortable he should be able to attack on offense and play his game – making shots, dishing the ball, increasing the productivity of a stagnant bench. They NEED to play him more – we have all seen the potential, just make it gradual. Plus, he is definitely not a liability on defense, so now’s a better time than ever to make it work. Especially with Rondo hurting and the team winning.

Sure
but a big Hawks-Celtics game is probably not the time to do it. Stick him in situations where there’s no pressure, up 30 in the third or something. Thankfully having such a good team means you’ll have a lot more situations for that type of development to occur. Also a comment about the bench in general, it was pretty obvious that they were suffering a lot from Allen being off all night. He usually stays on with the second team for a bit of time and helps to spread the floor for them. That wasn’t happening last night cause he couldn’t hit a shot.
And everyone who’s been suggesting that this was just another game for the C’s that was only slightly true. It was pretty clear to me that KG (if its possible) and PP were even more fired up than usual. They had that little argument in the huddle which you almost never see between the two of them

In response
Those are all good points, but I guess I didn’t make myself clear. I didn’t mean this Hawks game, I just meant in general, Pruitt should be getting more time, with increasing intervals. Not only in 30 point third quarters. He deserves a shot. If he can’t get it done after some development in actual game time, then we know what we don’t have. But I personally think the kid’s got a lot in him, and will be a solid bench player, either here or somewhere else.

Atlanta: Third Best Eastern Team, and Possibly Rising
Obviously there’s a lot of talent on the Hawks team. and it’s interesting how much they mirror the Celtics. But the thing they seem to lack is Boston’s mental toughness and emotional stability. It’s not at all clear Atlanta will ever develop that before other factors derail their title ambitions.
Barring injuries, I’m confident Boston can handle them again in the playoffs. But like everyone else, I’m hoping the Hawks will first have to go through Cleveland (if they can).

Another Perk Unnoticed Moment
People are starting to like Perk, but I think it could be for the wrong reasons. They say his offense is better, which it definitely is. But it is still the things that go unnoticed that make Perk so important to this team. Near the end of the game Rondo and KG pulled the alley oop again. KG picked his man and then nonchalantly rolled off it and it was over. But did you notice the lack of weak side help on that play. KG lulled his man to sleep, but if you noticed Perk had the weak side defender blocked out so no one could get to KG.

Great D down the stretch
Younger teams (like the Celtics of recent years) tend to lose close games because of a missed defensive assignment or a mental lapse.
That doesn’t happen to the C’s very often. You’ve got to beat them with a perfectly executed play or with something they’re not at all prepared for.
The Hawks are for real and I expect them to win 40+ games this year. I just don’t think they can beat the Cavs or the Celts in a 7 game series right now. Close, but not quite there.
