I voted no

…but I would probably feel better if there was a choice the said not yet. Rondo is the best defensive PG in the league but unfortunately All-Star berths are not handed out for being great defensive players unless you can also have offensive game. As much as Rondo’s rounding into form as a formidable playmaker and floor general, he’s not at All-Star level just yet.

But he probably will be next year.

But again because voting is only for guards and not specific as to point guard and shooting guard, Rondo will probably never be voted onto an All-Star team. I do think he will get to All-Star games as a coach’s or league’s pick.

if your team stinks

you don’t deserve to be an all-star. that rules out harris and rose. rose can play in the all-rookie game.

boston is the best team in the league, and rondo is a key part of that. detroit has had 4 all-stars in the past – why can’t boston?

ps: calderon’s stats are inflated do to the system he plays in and the shooters surrounding him (a la nash – and he’s not nearly as good as nash). rondo is the best starting pg in the east.

both the nets and bulls

are ’round .500

I mean, they sort of still stink, but this isn’t like getting a bobcat in the game or something.

Yeah i wish i could say he was, but so far hes not. But hes heating up recently….its not impossible….

it is early yet

but I thought this was worth discussing

the Nets are surprisingly good, mostly due to Harris, so I think he’s in as of now

I am not sure about Rose

Voting/All-Stars

First, off I feel like this is a somewhat poor way to frame the question.

In voting for the All-Star game, one has to choose only two guards, regardless of them being point or shooting guards. No one in their right mind would pick Rondo in that case (or anybody other than Devin Harris and Dwyane Wade for that matter).

So, if we have an imaginary All-Star team of 5 Gs, 5 Fs and 2 Cs, what could we end up with?

The forwards would be James, Bosh, Granger, Pierce and Garnett, hard to argue for anyone else there. The centers would of course be Howard and a coin toss between Bogut or Ilgauskas. For guards, I’d go with Harris, Wade, Joe Johnson, Rip Hamilton and someone else.

This is where the argument for Rondo could conceivably be made. However, I think (sorry BrickJames) that I would take Rose over Rondo here, and likely over anybody else (although an argument could perhaps be made for Mo Williams in light of how he has energized Cleveland’s offense). To break in at PG and have the kind of season he is having, shooting a true 54.4, and taking decent care of the basketball speaks volumes about his potential for success in the Association.

One additional point, this also directed at BrickJames. I’m not sure how sixth place (New Jersey) and half a game out of seventh (Chicago) is “stinking.” You want to explain that one? Take a look at the standings next time, bub. Harris seriously deserves MVP consideration for his performance so far, to say nothing of being an All-Star.

by ericdevin on Dec 2, 2008 3:03 PM EST reply actions

true - I didn't frame it very well

but I did want to start the discussion and I wanted to see you guys come up with the pros/cons yourselves

sometimes I like starting the discussion more than making the arguments myself

by Jeff Clark on Dec 2, 2008 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

that said

I plan on doing a full length article sometime in the next month or so, as Rondo builds his case

by Jeff Clark on Dec 2, 2008 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

Jeff-

I will of course look forward to reading it, as I do all your work. A good case could be made for Rondo, but defense is, as always hard to quantify.

Defense is not always an afterthought in All-Star balloting, Big Ticket. Ben Wallace is a 4-time All-Star and it sure as hell isn’t for something besides defense.

by ericdevin on Dec 2, 2008 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

At This Point

No Rip Hamilton. He does not deserve to be among the guards after his performance the first month of the season..

With that said, I do agree with your premise of how the players are selected by position. Rondo stirs the drink on this team, and unfortunately much of his game isn’t quantifiable. He also has only begun to play really well the last few games. If he keeps this intensity until the All Star break I would think he deserves to play.

Top five guards in the east at this point I would go: Wade, J.J., Harris, Ray, and someone else.

by amenhotep04 on Dec 2, 2008 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

Nope.

Love him as a player, but he’s not really close. No player averaging under 10 points a game will make it unless it comes with about 14 APG. I know his defense is top notch, but that is an afterthought when it comes to all star games.

You also have to consider that it is not ‘Point Guards’ it is just ‘Guards’ for the ASG. Ray Allen would be there well before Rondo, and even he is not likely.

by Big Ticket on Dec 2, 2008 3:06 PM EST reply actions

not yet

he needs to be more consistent.

by tommyfan on Dec 2, 2008 3:19 PM EST reply actions

I voted no

He is 2nd on the list in terms of APG & RPG, but I think the PPG is where he will get the snub. I realize everything is based on the all around game, but all of those other guys are averaging 12+ ppg, and Rondo is <10 ppg. You could make the case, its because he has PP, Ray & KG on the team, along with another shooting threat in House, and slasher TA. I just think when you look @ the Celtics, many people still just think of the Big 3, and tend to forget about the intangibles in the bench, and the contributions that Perk, and specifically for this post, Rondo bring. Other guards on that list are included in their team as a primary offensive option…or perhaps I should reword it as, they are part of their teams duo or trio where the offense gets the bulk of its strength from. As I said, when many people think of Boston, they still just think of Pierce, Allen & Garnett. They tend to forget that Rondo is responsible for the flow of the offense, but its just because he isn’t considered one of the first 3 options. You have a guy like Derrick Rose who has basically become the face of the Bulls franchise, followed by D. Harris, who is quickly making himself known in NJ, Mo Williams who is hyped up as Robin to LeBron’s Batman, Mike Bibby, who is running the offense on a, thus far, rejuvenated Hawks team, & Andre Miller, who for years, has always been a large large part in the Philly framework. I’m not downing Rondo, I just think its a combination of him not being considered as part of the Big 3 & also the media pumping blood into the stories of Derrick Rose becoming the face of the Bulls, M. Williams coming in to help LeBron, possibly being that final piece to getting the Cavs over the hump, & lastly the fact he considerably lacks these other players in the PPG catergory. I think if he was in double digits, 10.5-11.0 at least, then he would have a full fledged shot at not being overlooked. He definitely won’t be voted in by fans, as we know, its just basically one big popularity contest for most of the spots. The coach vote may be his only way, but not guaranteed.

Not yet, but if he starts to make those 15/7/5 nights a norm he’ll be there soon.

Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...

by ManUp on Dec 2, 2008 4:36 PM EST reply actions

No, but there’s still time to buff up his credentials.

I think it’ll be very difficult for Boston to get four All-Stars. There needs to be no doubt that Rondo is superior to the others, and at the moment that doubt exists.

by Who on Dec 2, 2008 4:39 PM EST reply actions

No

He doesn’t have the numbers, and there are more deserving players on his own team. Also, the NBA gives slots to “guards”, not “point guards”, so Rondo is going to have a ton of competition. I don’t think he’ll come close to a berth.

That being said...

Rondo ranks in the top six in the NBA in assists per minute and assist to turnover ratio, which is pretty impressive.

by Roy_Hobbs on Dec 2, 2008 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't think so, but...

If you ask, Who are the two best PGs in the East right now?, the answer might be Harris and Rondo. Calderon, who is perhaps still struggling with injury, is offering less than Rondo right now, especially if you factor in defense. Rose and Rondo might be closer, depending on how you evaluate these guys.

But how does one factor in playing time? Rondo is playing considerably fewer minutes per game, so on a rate-stat basis, he might come out ahead. But playing a lot of minutes is valuable, so…

Anyway, it’s closer than I realized. Harris is playing out of his mind, but Rondo has a very good case for point guard #2.

by PJ Martinez on Dec 2, 2008 5:05 PM EST reply actions

Devin Harris has earned his dues!

Out of all those listed, Devin Harris is the biggest stud and has been for a big part of his carrer been overlooked by the mainstream NBA viewer. Its time Devin got his dues, he’s a class act’, gives it his all on both ends every single night and he flatout is a beast.

It could be argued that at this current point in time, Rajon has the merrits to be just behind Devin as the 2nd choich but Mo Williams has been doing good and with the hype surrounding Derick Rose, thats still going to be an argument.

My vote went to Devin, not because i like him anymore than Rajon but i objectivly think he diserves it more.

by Dybdal on Dec 2, 2008 5:08 PM EST reply actions

Should Rondo be an all-star? Yes. Will he be an all-star? No.

Defense is usually undervalued. Also, how may all-stars can you have from one team?

by Brickowski on Dec 2, 2008 5:08 PM EST reply actions

The All-Star Snooze.

If the Celtics send no one to the All-Star game, but win the league title, that’d be fine by me. I suppose the players care about the honor, but the game’s a useless after-thought.

by no kidding on Dec 2, 2008 5:08 PM EST reply actions

rondo is an all star. everyone will agree that it is defense that wins championships and rondo plays the best d. harris is the only point worthy of consideration because he is carrying nj on his shoulders, and he could be better than rondo. but i like the way rondo sets up the boston offense. he’s no 47 point game guy,but if allstars were picked exclusively by the players, i think rondo would be right there.

A Dose of Reality

I would love to see Rondo become an all-star but, with Perk going this year I just don’t think RR has a chance…

by Fastbreak1 on Dec 2, 2008 6:23 PM EST reply actions

“with Perk going this year I just don’t think RR has a chance…”

Lol. Since Rondo isnt called upon to be a primary scorer, he wont anytime soon be putting up eye-popping stats ala Harris/Rose. But since when does a pg=primary scorer? Dj wouldnt make all-star by the same std. But, as noted, it doesnt really matter.

Btw. No rookie all-stars. Dues must be paid.

by Tenacious D on Dec 2, 2008 6:42 PM EST reply actions

Rondo'd

If we meet the Lakers in the Finals, the series will come down to guard play. Rondo made Derek Fisher look tired last year.

by The Real Large James 2 on Dec 2, 2008 6:53 PM EST reply actions

although i’ll admit that all three of those guys are all-star point guards, on this team i’d rather have rondo. AND those 3 point guards are ones that excite celtics fans becuase they know that when rondo is matched on them, he can score at will.

by xmuscular ghandix on Dec 2, 2008 7:14 PM EST reply actions

what about Ray Allen?

i’m just saying. if you’re talking about RIP Hamilton … I’d take Ray over him any day.

by Cousin It on Dec 2, 2008 8:03 PM EST reply actions

Rip over Ray?

thats crazy Ray Allen is hands down a better guard. People look into the stats too much when discussing Rondo. How often does he really get outplayed by an opposing PG?

by Nine on Dec 2, 2008 10:26 PM EST reply actions

The Chicag point of view...

Here is a Sam Smith article discussing Derrick Rose’s possibilities as an all-star…

He seems to make the point that if Allen Iverson gets voted to start, then Rose likely will miss the game, but if not, then the coaches could possible vote Rose as a reserve.

by kidronmusic on Dec 3, 2008 1:03 AM EST reply actions

If AI steals the starting spot from Devin Harris or Calderon

Then it’s a problem. The way I see it, Calderon gets the nod, AI gets a nod because…well he’s Iverson, and either Rondo or Rose get a berth. Now, I like Rondo as a player, one of the few Celtics players who don’t incite seething anger. However, his highlights are minimal and is overshadowed by 3 stud players on his own team. Meanwhile, Derrick Rose is making the Bulls look somewhat decent when they’d be crap otherwise, and has a nice cache of YouTube clips that the online voters will no doubt be aware of. Rajon has been a damn good PG and answered all the doubts about whether Boston could win a title with him starting, but I don’t think he’s elevated himself past the “really solid” part.

Then again, the All-Star game is a meaningless affair, so let us Bulls fans enjoy Rose while you folks march on to another title ;)

One of the three make the game IMO.

Was Prince an all-star with Detroit????!!

NO
He was there as a reward for the team succes…
So why shouldn’t Rondo be awarded, we lost 20 games and won about 120 since the start last season, and he was a huge part of it.
Should that be rewarded?

by makaveli on Dec 3, 2008 5:54 AM EST reply actions

He deserves to be heavily considered

But lets look at it logically hes second overall in every category besides scoring in the east. We all know that it is Rondo who drives and controls this beast we call the Celtics. No other pg in my opinion is a better fit for his team than Rondo. He is the most unselfish pg I ever seen. His ppg is low because hes doesnt need to score for this team we all know he can get were he wants to go and if we needed him to score more then he would. Lets be honest all star voting is about the sexy pick plus hype. People are influenced about what they see on tv and on sportscenter. He is the most valuable player on our team take him it out the equation and kiss our banner 18 chances goodbye do that with any other pg in the east and i couldnt justify their team taking as big of hit as the celts would.

by Powe'sPosse on Dec 3, 2008 9:26 AM EST reply actions

He is but it's close

He’s definitely having a great year, arguably better than Calderon. He’s not a main scoring option on the Celtics, so his points are obviously not as high, but it’s because he’s taking less shots. He’s actually shooting at a higher clip than Calderon and playing much better defense (2.2 steals/game vs. 0.7). So Rondo plays better defense, is more efficient with the basketball (same TO/g ratio), and plays for a better team. I think that’s worth the 3 points a game more Calderon adds. They’re about equal in my book overall.

by tjdonegan on Dec 3, 2008 8:22 PM EST reply actions

Rondo is an AllStar IMO

Put Rondo on a bad team and Rajon can torch opponents at 20 ppg easily, he defers to the big three so much but I definitely see Rondo ave 20 a game once there is no more KG, PP and Ray, there is just no way Doc will not ride him out just the way NJ is riding Harris out.

by bopna on Dec 4, 2008 1:49 AM EST reply actions

I'll put it this way

Between his playmaking and his defense, he is playing at an All-Star level. Actually making the damn team—and, let’s be honest, his only chance is to get voted in by the coaches—is a different story.
