Does Pierce seem a little cranky or is it just me?

It could totally be my imagination but Pierce seems to be a little bit unhappy this year for no apparent reason. A few moments stick out in my mind... like the other night when Bibby got an open 3 down the stretch he yelled at Ray, or when he wouldn't go to the ball the other night when Perk was trying to inbound causing a timeout... tiny things but his disposition just seems cranky. I can't imagine what the reason would be.

I also try to notice who has more of a chemistry together and who doesn't (like how Ray will not EVER give the ball in the post to Perk), and I feel like Paul is hesitant to give up the rock to Ray, even when he's hot. A few games ago Ray was absolute HEAT, and was standing wide open in the corner and Pierce with planty of time on the clock hoisted up a contested flatfooted long 2.

He also at times will kind of show Rondo up. Rondo kind of plays his game but Pierce will all of a sudden not want to run anymore and will kind of take the ball and gum up the offense.  It will sometimes deflate Rondo, but not like it used to of course.

I am not trying to suggest anything or speculate, and things could not be going better for the team, but this is just something to watch. Maybe because of the exposure he got last year, he was kind of eyeing this season as his shot at an MVP award, but now is truly just a member of a 'team', and part of him misses being the man. I don't know.

If you notice after the games KG will quickly give all of the teams credit to Pierce or whoever else. How great was that comment about 'not being able to rebound with Perk and Rondo around'? Thats great stuff.

Pierce is still the man, not trying to suggest otherwise, I am just getting this weird unexplained vibe from him.

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

I agree on all counts...

Patting my own back as I usually do, I said this in the last game thread (blog comments) – Pierce seems to be on a team of his own.

I’m somewhat glad to see RR continue to not pass to the black hole that has become Paul Pierce, simply because Pierce calls for the ball. Rondo has taken control of the offense, and this has allowed Rajon to dictate the pace of the game when he stays out of foul trouble. Good stuff to watch.

Pierce needs to stop being a b!tch and start moving off the ball, setting picks, and adjusting to the rotating defense. Instead, he plays like Vince Tmac or Lebron, standing at the three point line, hands lackadaisically extended, waiting for the ball. It really irritates me, only thing that’s worse IMO is our “offensive set” at the end of the quarter (which is let Rajon dribble for 15 seconds, pass to Pierce, and let him dribble for 5 more before putting up a "shot"). Garbage.

Wake up Pierce. Yeah we are 25-2 but come the playoffs, different story. Stop being a baby and start playing ball.

God bless and good night!

Hmm, I think this is all a bit much. Lets look at it as two different scenarios. First, on the defensive end PP seems to be playing team enforcer/disciplanarian. If any of you all are old enough, and I know some of you are, you might remember that the old 80’s teams would bicker quite a lot. They were kind of mean, occasionally with each other. It was even more the case with the 90’s bulls team (I was here watching them). Pippen and Jordan would really lay into team mates for bad decisions, on national TV, in 20 point blow-outs, whenever. And like that team our whole season is about practice, attention to detail and getting bettter. I applaud PP for taking this on on this team.

On the offensive side you have a more valid point I think. But first lets clarify that ray allen refuses to give the ball back to rondo and messes with his mojo way more than PP. Second PP’s job on this team is to exploit mismatches (the other team has to make him a top defensive priority or pay) and second to do what he does better than anybody else on the team, create a shot for himself, break down the D. He is like a bailout option a lot of times and that is fine. He must have old habits not unlike RA’s over dribbling or KG’s long fadeaways, avoiding the post and turning over outlet passes. They aren’t perfect. But I really think you are reading a lot in to talk about a lost MVP season, or missing being the man. He has said and acted like a man maniacally going after a title in my book.

My personal belief is that he's bored

Its been said by Paul Pierce before, that they have to take it one game at a time and to fight off boredom during the regular season and i think the last thing said by the man is setting in during this streak.

He needs the LA game just as much as the entire Laker team does and should be another player after that game regardless of the outcome.

Leadership is diving for a loose ball, getting the crowd involved, getting other players involved. It`s being able to take it as well as dish it out. That`s the only way you`re going to get respect from the players

This is a great post

I think boredom IS ultimately what it boils down to.

We all know that Pierce, more than anything, wants to win. And he’s at that stage in his career where it means just a little bit more than personal stats. I agree with the sentiments expressed by rickyfan that Pierce’s behavior at times seems disruptive to the mojo of the team.

I really do agree that this upcoming LA game will give him the energy boost we haven’t seen for a little bit. All this winning has apparently made Paul bored. There is no sense of adventure playing teams like the Knicks.

Paul will probably demand the ball from the very beginning, and score 30+. I expect it.

Typical

KG gets on a teammate for missing a defensive rotation and he’s a great leader…..PP gets on a teammate for missing a defensive rotation and he’s a cranky, selfish, egomaniac.

If you recall the play in question it was at a crucial time in the game and Ray had missed numerous rotations in one stretch. PP had every right to get on him. Ray himself has said many times that they all get on each other and it helps keep them all responsible to the team. PP very oftenwill point to himself and admit to the team when he’s made a mistake without anyone having to do it for him.

This is all about keeping the team focused on the prize. The day you hear any member of the team complaining about PP, KG or any other player getting on their case then get back to us. Until then chill out and let this team do it’s thing.

And as far as PP not passing to Ray, or being a black hole, go back to the play by plays and check out the assists. That’s hardly the case.

I don’t have to go back to the play by plays or check assists, I watch the games.

by rickyfan3.0... on Dec 22, 2008 7:18 PM EST reply actions

  Assists
Rajon Rondo 7.5
Paul Pierce 3.8
Kevin Garnett 2.8
Ray Allen 2.6

leaving aside the attitude argument about Pierce -
It is really hard to argue that a small forward who is no longer a primary ballhnadler but gets almost 4 assists per game is a black hole.

I’ll tell you what. I will make a point of watching PP both for the attitude you describe and especially for the offensive ball hogging. As far as I can remember, I have been thrilled when PP takes the ball and decides he is scoring or getting to the line. It has usually been because that is what the team needed and I am glad we have a special one on one guy who can do what he does. But I will make an effort to keep an eye on what you are talking about, I think this might be an interesting thread thoughout the season.

But could somebody please, please, tell me how to make thread updates go to my email. I can’t believe this fancy new system doesn’t do that.

Pierce isnt being selfish enough

Hes still the most explosive scorer on this team

by TheAncientRivalry on Dec 28, 2008 12:10 AM EST reply actions

you got that right ancient, feed the beast, when allen gets hot we feed him, we get garnett in the “post.” When the defense is killing our sets and we need a guy to find his shot or a teamate who is better at that on this team than pp? ray allen dribbling around in cirlces, rr turning down three jump shots inside ten feet and one 2 foot floater in the same possesion? When we need to, give the ball to paul and get out of the way.

I am paul pierce, and I approve this message.
