These Celtics Simply Don't Care.

We've all seen the post game interviews over the past few weeks. The Celtics will pull another one out, increasing their winning streak to 'X+1' and there will be a semi painful interview, with one of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen or Kevin Garnett needing to answer the inevitable "What do you think about the Celtics' X game winning streak?"

Their answers are always the same; they play it off one way or another, with bites like: "We don't look at stuff like that", or "Its just another win.", or maybe they'll try to be funny and say "We've won how many? Wow!", but at all times the message is the same: We don't care about these wins. We only care about the wins that start in May.

But as this number gets bigger and bigger, the same old song and dance wears a little bit thin. You know every guy in that lockerroom knows how many games they've won in a row. You know they all knew what the record was for best team with only 2 losses. When they'd only won 9 or 10 in a row, they could pretend they didn't know, and we could pretend like we believed them.

Now we're working on #19, and its starting to get a little bit ridiculous. Example A below:

Oh come on Boston Celtics. "Doc Rivers says he's never once heard the players talk about the streak, not even once, not even in the huddle! He doubts his players are aware they've won a certain number of games in a row!".."Rajon Rondo says: 'You know what? It doesn't matter at all.'"

Now Im all for a good cliche but this is ridiculous....or is it??

At first I thought it was funny. What if the Boston Celtics were so focused on winning that they neglected to notice almost everything else around them? But since I'm no Seinfeld, that amusment soon gave way to annoyance, because my team was now nothing more than a common sports cliche. So I watched the video again, out of bitterness and I noticed something. First, these Celtics must be one of the least fun interviews to do of all time, but second, I don't care either.

Who cares how many games these guys have won in a row? That's not what Boston Celtics basketball is about. Nobody is going to hoist Kevin Garnett or Paul Pierce into celestial status just because they got hot during a win streak. You know what our Boston Celtics do? We END other teams win streaks (see: Houston, 2007-2008). We don't care about quirky stats like win streaks. Everyone knows those are just a nice combination of good play and probably better luck. We care about winning enough games in order to guarantee home court advantage during the playoffs and finals. We care about winning playoff series, and we care about winning championships.

But in a funny way, it helps this streak. It helps it because unlike a struggling Grizzlies team that gets a little bit of extra mustard because they won four games straight, we already have all the condiments we need. We want a championship, we know the best way to get that is to get home court advantage. In order to get the advantage we have to have the best record in the league, and with the way the Cavs, Lakers and Magic are playing, thats no small task. If these Boston Celtics want to guarantee Home Court, and the best chance at another chip, they've got to treat almost every game like a must win situation.

So I guess what I'm saying is, no, of course these guys don't care about how many games they've won in a row. That's stupid, who would care about a thing like that. No, these Celtics care about going out every single game against every single team and giving 100% and winning every darn one of them, because that's what winners do, they don't take nights off.

Now if they manage to somehow string a fair number of those wins together for some quaint little record, well all the better I suppose. But that's not why they do it, just ask them.

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

Well I gotta say...

The win steak is a big deal. Why? Because the Celtics, for the most part, haven’t even been playing great ball. The standard of play we’ve seen from them this year is great – but on par with what they’re capable of. They aren’t overachieving in my opinion. Lots of teams that go on streaks are totally playing over expectations. Usually when it comes time that they lose a game or two, they’re back to ground level losing as often as they’re winning and trying to compete for something ordinary like a playoff spot.

This Celtics team is arguably the greatest in its storied history. It has the potential, at least. Appreciate that these players are not only playing for a team on a near 20 game win streak, they’re actually doing it without making it a big deal, while not playing “all out.” There are still lots of evident holes. Never mind the fact that some players don’t even contribute to the wellness of the team on the court at all. We still see this team give up leads constantly. The common denominator that has kept this streak alive is that we bounce back from adversity, come through in clutch moments, and seemingly don’t make it a big deal, as it’s just another day of business. That’s what strikes me about this team and its streak. They’re so good that they don’t HAVE to downplay it, they are so good that their level of performance collectively does it for them.

Here is the thing with the streak for me. This might be unpleasant, but just imagine that we meet Atlanta in the first or second round and they beat us, or Cleveland really is as good as we are afraid of and they beat us. Can you imagine that pain? And for these guys, they are well aware of how old they are, they know it is not like the old Pistons or Bulls where they learn and grow into champions over the years. This team has this year. It would be a monumental tragedy (in sports terms) if this team, that is this good did not win. they will probably have a good shot next year and maybe even the year after that, but not winning it all this year would really hurt. So, they have to be relentless, mean, maniacal, they have to try to get so good that even cleveland beating them would be a huge long shot, that atlanta has no chance, that the lakers, deep down, know they can’t win. We are the favorites right now, but given this team’s window, we have to be even better than that. Streaks like this are nothing in comparison to that kind of insane focus. For this team under these conditions, streaks like this are to be expected.

I just hope that they are having fun with the journey, not rah-rah fun, but the deep satisfaction of work and improvement. I hope they are enjoying that part of it.
