Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

A losing streak?

Well this is not shaping up to be a good West Coast swing.

A 10 point lead for most of the game evaporated into a second straight loss.  The Celtics look very much out of sync on offense.  It's too late for me to really analyze this one, I'm sure others have the energy though....

deja vu?

I’ve seen this movie before. You know the one where a certain captain refuses to drive to the basket, and the Big Ticket can’t take over the game when it mattered most. And, not, we don’t need Posey!

by The Village Idiot on Dec 27, 2008 1:14 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yep. exactly. if we end up nose diving and ending up going down in round 1 or 2 no one should be shocked

kg can’t take over. pp is up for it but is only one man. ray’s rain man routine is a problematic in streaks(ask the bucks and sonics)and we have NO GROWN UP MAN ON THE BENCH.

not looking good.please danny come through

You know the one where a certain captain refuses to drive to the basket

I don’t know what game you were watching but our captain was the lone bright spot in the game I watched and the only reason he didn’t drive was because he wasn’t getting the ball and when he was they had four guys waiting for him in the paint.

FREE GABE PRUITT!!!!

Eddie House with a whopping -19 in 21 minutes tonight.

It’s time for Doc to unleash the Gabe. No more of this burying players crap. Gabe does everything better than House, outside of shooting 3’s and FTs (maybe).

by a tommy point on Dec 27, 2008 1:26 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed . . .

Gabe may not shoot threes quite as well as House but it seems like every time I see him in there he manages to knock down a couple with poise. He plays great defense and can handle the ball like a true point guard too.

I don’t get why he doesn’t see more playing time in general, nevermind this game.

bad bad bad

They came out in the 1st half and thought they would walk all over them. They played the worst half I’ve seen all season (I have League Pass and have seen all the games) in the 2nd half.

This was embarrasing. My wife was dreading the end of the winning streak but I was fine with them losing to the Fakers. This loss pisses me off because they showed no life in the 2nd half.

Tony Allen needs a good shooting coach. KG gets called for traveling at least once a game for his post moves. Has anyone noticed that PP’s shot looks different this year. It seems, especially on 3’s, that his right foot is alot further forward than it used to be. Maybe causing his poor FG% this year? We desperately need a sold FA signing for our bench or we won’t make it this year.

I have been visiting this site for a long time. I post sometimes but read a lot. This is a great team. These two losses will bring out all the doubters and questions of “how good is this team?” I have watched the C’s since their ‘86 title. I have and will always stand behind this team but this shows a chink in the armor. The LA loss could be expected. This loss, 3 of their 4 best players injured, should have been easy. Lack of focus and desire to bounce back killed us. Hopefully we end the road trip 2-2, or every sports reporter, newspaper, and sports show will be talking about us…and we won’t like what they have to say!

by gizmo010101 on Dec 27, 2008 1:29 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Or another thing we can do, give sam cassell some burn.. I know he takes some bad shots, but he’s clutch-worthy, used to close game situations, and he makes the opposing team respect his shot. When rondo is scared to shoot a wide open 5 footer, why not give Cassell a try?

Is it just me, or did they not run any plays for Ray Allen? I know he was in foul trouble..

i feel sad with the result and angry with the bad attitude.
but if we had won this match even with so bad attitude,it would be more terrible.
i mean it’s time for us to learn something.

Even the greatest of teams have ups and downs in the regular season. After 19 straight, you had to expect this would happen sooner or later.

I am not worried. I actually kind of like that Doc is leaving the bench guys on the floor for longer stretches and making them accountable, it will only make us better come June.

by D Dub on Dec 27, 2008 1:34 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I am not quite agree with you.
It’s a little crazy to sacrifice a match just for training of the bench guys. It’s not worth it.

by kg_star on Dec 27, 2008 1:38 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

its still December, right? Every team goes through rough spots, that’s why they play 82. Just wait, even the Cavs will put together a losing streak sooner or later.

Maybe Danny has his hands tied with adding another player? If you were Doc and knew that, wouldn’t you try and prepare the guys you DO have during the regular season?

This is a marathon, not a sprint. There is a lot of basketball left to be played and none of us will even remember 2 losses in December come playoff time.

by D Dub on Dec 27, 2008 1:42 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I am not worried, about Doc that is. I know teams have ups and downs. What worries me is the difference in attitude from one game to the next. The LA game was buzzing the whole game like it was a finals game. They played a full 48 at 100%. Tonight, they came out like they were going to cruise. When GS started their run, the C’s didn’t pick it up at all. I don’t know if I have even seen so many off-the-ball offensive fouls in a game?

by gizmo010101 on Dec 27, 2008 1:41 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what everyone else thinks doesn't mean crap

what matters is the we can see what our issues are now, and even the swarms of fools here may well get it soon

summary: need a big. need a bench scorer. need that scorer to be a forward who can play the 3 and 4 on d. can’t count on kG ever to take over a game on offense. please no that ray is way ocd and will have bad stratches that can last entire play off series. rondo can’t shoot a jumper. some of these things can’t be fixed

by wahz on Dec 27, 2008 1:36 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

NO question that we need help, and that this bench is poorly constructed – which is a point I made in August.

I’m equally vexed by those who think that these struggles prove it’s time to “unleash” players who’ve done relatively little to this point. Rivers sees these guys in pracrtice. I’m certainly not going to advocate “unleashing” Paddy O’Nothing, or to a lesser extent, Pruitt. They’re not playing for a reason.

by CoachBo on Dec 27, 2008 10:26 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I second that (FREE GABE)

Yes. Gabe is a scoring point guard, handles pressure better than House, and can also shoot 3s. We ned to see more of him so he can get battle hardened well before the playoffs.

Hey, D Dub, I also like the fact that Doc is leaving the bench guys in longer, but shouldn’t that include more minutes for Gabe? When he’s been played, he showed flashes of competence.

by The Village Idiot on Dec 27, 2008 1:40 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

totally agree. I have been very impressed with Gabe thus far this year and would like to see him get more run.

by D Dub on Dec 27, 2008 1:44 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

+1 wahz, that’s why you go get starbury.. He can create his own shot, Certainly not afraid to take a big shot when we need it, and he will create better spacing then having eddie house or Tony Turnover slashing.

Also, why not have Obryant start instead of Powe? He might’ve had that certain spark to get the guys going considering he is playing his old team and he would want to stick it to Nelly. Besides, he offers up some height and doesn’t mess with the bench(having Powe come off the bench instead of starting). Thoughts?

by akademikz on Dec 27, 2008 1:42 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wow. put the shovel down and take a step back. Starbury? c’mon now, when has he ever HELPED any team in this league???

by D Dub on Dec 27, 2008 1:45 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   1 recs

Agreed.

Starbury would be an insane risk. Yes, he might pay off and if he did it would be huge; however, if he played according to his track record it would either be the undoing of the Celtics, or they too would waive him before the playoffs started having decided to cut their losses. Adding Starbury is essentially gambling the team’s title chances on one of the worst cancers the league has ever seen.

re: O'Bryant

Players should earn the right to start. Leon’s relentless effort on a day-in, day-out basis rightfully gave him the chance to take the starting opportunity in Perk’s stead. I’m not there in practice every day, but given O’Bryant’s limited role and how he looks when he does get minutes, I’m in no rush to be handing him any starts or extended appearances. When he deserves them, they will come.

Steve, could OB have backed up Powe today, giventhat Perk was not available? I understand the meritocracy thing and all, but still, I would have loved to see a little OB other than the 15 secs he saw tonight.

That sentiment I understand

I just thought the issue of handing the guy I start (and I understand the GS significance) would have been a bit much. I’ve got no problem with your suggestion for a bit more time somewhere in there.

That said, the Gabe issue bothers me more. It’s not that I’m fed up with House – I’m a huge fan to a point of low rationality with Eddie – but it’s more that I’d just like to find the minutes for Gabe. He has the tools to really help in the long term (with “long term” possibly even being this year’s playoffs), but I’d like to find out what he can do during the year when the risks are lower, so at least we know what we have headed into the playoffs. I liked that he was starting to get some minutes in parts of the game that actually meant something (i.e. second quarter), and I’m hoping to see that continue. With ya on that one.

by TheAncientRivalry on Dec 27, 2008 1:53 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

well, your right about his playoff minutes. barring an injury he will be riding the pine.

I disagree about his talent though. He defends his position very well, has length and is a knockdown 3pt shooter. Those are NBA skills and I am sure he would be getting run on most every other team in the league.

ya got me pegged, i thought for sure Gabe could play the 4/3 for us and replace Posey’s contribution……. what does one thing have to do with the other??

by D Dub on Dec 27, 2008 1:59 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed about Posey. This Celtics team is built for right now, not the future. They traded the future when they brought in Ray and KG. So what if Posey would have fallen way off three years from now? KG, Pierce and Ray are probably gonna be falling off in three years too. Ainge shoulda done whatever he could to stock the team for THIS season.

by WildYams on Dec 27, 2008 2:00 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Disagree about Posey. The old paradigm of building NBA teams used to be either the “NOW or the FUTURE”. The new paradigm is figuring out how to win now AND build for the future. Remember, players like Rondo and Powe – they were supposed to be contributors in the future. But Powe is a solid contributor today, even as we talk about Rondo in All Star terms.

by The Village Idiot on Dec 27, 2008 2:10 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying in 3 years the Celtics will turn into a pumpkin and implode or something; but Rondo and Powe or any of the other young guys are not going to be the centerpiece of any championship team in the future. They could be complimentary pieces (hell, they already have been), but these guys are not LeBron, Wade or Bosh. The Celtics’ title hopes rest with KG, PP and Ray, and when those guys are too old to bring their in-prime A game, then the window will be closed.

Ainge should have signed whoever he could to help the team win this year, and Posey should have been at the top of that list. There is still time this season to rectify that mistake.

by WildYams on Dec 27, 2008 4:26 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Point well taken, but pushing Gabe for me isn’t about this game per se. It’s about developing a player that has potential. Let’s not write peopel off before they’ve prove themselves. At the beginning of last season, did anyone seriously believe Big Baby and Powe would be playoff contributors of any significance?

by The Village Idiot on Dec 27, 2008 1:57 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don’t know if Pruitt is an Nba player ready for prime time sub minutes or not. But why the heck haven’t we given this kid a little run for at least 3 or 4 min a game in the 3Q before the game gets out of hand. We had many double digit wins against inferior competition and if Pruitt comes out and plays poorly, fine, he can sit next to Scal all year long. But Doc has this thing about not playing youngsters. He did it to Big Al and Perk when we had Blount and Raef. He needs to get off this kick about not playing youngsters. If they don’t do the job, no problem but right now Eddie and Tony aren’t getting it done. All I’m saying is give the kid a shot for 4 or 5 min. for a good 7 game stretch. If he doesn’t step up, no problems with me but he isn’t getting the opportunity and there have been many games when he could have been inserted without us risking a complete collapse and defeat.

by brianceltfan on Dec 27, 2008 2:55 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Gabe isn't an NBA caliber player?

Based on what, oh wise one? I love these rebuttals with no substance whatsoever.

You can have your -19 in 21 minutes of Eddie House. I’ll take my chances with the more fundamentally sound and athletically gifted player, who makes everything he does look easy.

turnovers

are a serious problem with us, and yes I know, it was the same last year…but just imagine how much better this team would be with less turnovers

by TheAncientRivalry on Dec 27, 2008 1:54 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yup, that is our biggest problem.

by D Dub on Dec 27, 2008 1:57 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Perkins?

What is the word on how bad his injury is or how long he’ll be out for? It’s the same shoulder he keeps re-injuring, isn’t it? How much of a concern is this? He didn’t even get hit on the play that injured it yesterday, they just hit the ball real hard as he went up. His shoulder’s got to be more durable than that or there’s gonna be real trouble there, especially since without him KG’s the only 7 footer on the team (when KG actually allows his real height to be given, that is).

by WildYams on Dec 27, 2008 1:57 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

good question. it seems like the organization is being really hush hush about it. he clearly keeps dislocating it, and as anyone with that problem will tell you, it just gets easier and easier to dislocate as time goes on.

this really underscores the need for PJ to re-un-retire.

by D Dub on Dec 27, 2008 2:06 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That’s what I mean: if he can dislocate it without it even being hit, then that’s a really bad sign. He played the rest of the game yesterday though, so hopefully he didn’t dislocate it; but nevertheless, he wasn’t hit on that play, and it’s not like it got pulled back at a weird angle or anything. If it turns out he’s gonna need surgery again after that, then I’m really gonna question his ability to play consistently in the NBA for the rest of his career. You just can’t expect a post player like him to not get contact while banging around down there.

PJ Brown might be the answer again, but I would be wary of bringing him back this early. The guy 39 years old after all, and I think he was largely effective last year due to having most of the year off. If he’s brought in to play lots of minutes cause Perk is hurt, I’d worry about PJ’s durability in the playoffs too.

by WildYams on Dec 27, 2008 2:15 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Shoulder problems are no joke

If you have shoulder problems, you are at risk anytime your arm goes above your head. I’ve sublexated one shoulder, and dislocated another more than once. for a whole, everything you do feels gimpy. It feels like it will come out at anytime. Perk’s game is predicated on physicality.

Just think about C-Webb. Chris Webber’s early shoulder problems turned him into a finesse player. He was a true PF coming out of Michigan. Perk doesn’t have the skill set Webb does, so if he’s having problems with it now, it definitely is a cause for concern. It also ruined Dwayne Wade for almost 2 seasons.

Remember that the Celtics still only have 4 losses and have a better record than the Lakers. In fact we are still holding the best in the NBA, right? Didn’t the Lakers recently lose two games on their road trip? Hmmm I think that you should rethink how good the Lakers are. And maybe the bench isn’t that good either or is it that Kobe is past his prime?

posey most overrated ever?

judging by the praise heaped upon him here i might say so? now the headline is obviously sarcasm, before anyone jumps down my throat. my only point is posey is not the answer. the answer is a big who can anchor the second unit, a mutumbo or a pj. i myself vote for signing big D, but that is just my opinion. winning breeds a lust for wins but i for one am happy to see doc sticking to rotations and not thinking any single game is more important than a season. let the second unit play. if it costs us a game or two in the name of experience it is well worth it. who cares about 70 wins when the goal is #18.

the sky isn’t fallling, this is still the team with the best record in the league. learn how to see things in all those nuanced shades, not just black and white.

Oh shucks

Funny but as I sat back to watch the 4Q with beer in hand the taste got bitter and bitter with each passing sip.

Damn, we blew this game, up by 14. Ray’s effort and the rest of the bench’s effort tonight was as useful for us in trying to win this game as tits on a hog.

It’s past 1AM in my neck of the woods. I wrongly thought going into Sunday’s game that we were a a notch above the rest of the NBA elite. I now think we are in the mix and until we get healthy and get a better bench roster we are one of only about 4 or 5 teams that may win it all this year. As others have said and I agree, we will hit a funk period and here it is.

No Polly Anna posts on how we are still 19-2 from me and no Chicken Little the sky is falling either. Time to regroup and look for bench personnel answers.

My advice:
1) play Pruitt at least 5 to 10 minutes the next 7 games. (these come at Eddie’s expense).
2) activate Sam or I guess he is and give him some minutes too.
3) we need a commitment from PJ or we need to move on. Even if he says yes and slowly and stays inactive (on the 15 man roster but doesn’t suit up, we know we got him and can let him get into playing shape).
4) I don’t know who of the 2 is doing better Walker/JR (hunch it is Walker) but get him up here and give him some of Baby’s and Tony’s minutes too.
5) Eyes and ears, calls, see what we can do before the trade deadline. Baby, Eddie, Tony, Scal, sometime Powe too are killing us. It is now costing us victories against mediocre competition. We can’t expect the starters to play lights out all year long and they too will have so-so games.

  • For the second night in a row I see our own players yelling at each other. We need a bench and attitude adjustment.

As Ringo Star used to say, “it don’t come easy”.

Pruitt and OB

Pruitt deserves his shot to excel. If he flops after a half dozen games where he gets a good 5 min. run in 6 straight games (and the minutes are game minutes, not junk time) then I’ll live with the results. We need a back up point. And we better all be sending cards and letters to PJ too. If he doesn’t tip his hand soon that he’s coming back we should be on the horn to the Thunder trying to land Joe Smith. And OB I think is softer than a baby’s bottom.

Posey was needed

I thought this past summer we should have made a serious 3 yr deal for Posey and locked him up. Or if he wanted to be cute and continue to test the waters than we at least gave him an honest effort out of the gate. I know on most nights we can beat most NBA teams even with a lackluster bench. But the bench is taxing our starters and it is the bench that has to come through against the Lakers, Cavs, Magic, Hawks type teams not the Thunder, T-wolves, Bobcats, Bulls, and Grizzlies.

The committee to replace Posey needs to step up soon or we need some new members on the committee.

I did notice the arguing again

Everyone, well KG and Rondo and Doc tried to play it off saying that they do it all the time, but I seriously think there is something going on internally with the team causing them to behave this way. I’m trying not to look into it too much. But the constant arguing, along with these two losses, its not a coincidence.

I dont know wat Doc is doing. When the second unit comes up, they never pass to Ray. Ray has been up to something and I have no clue what.

Rondo has disappeard, Pierce and KG are trying to hard and failing at it. The bench sucks, and TA is trying to make himself a Posey when hes not, thats why I laughed when he tried to say hes better than Posey. House has become very inconsistent, and soo many problems, my head hurts.

The TO’S are killings us badly. I came into the game thinking, “Oh we shuld put them away quickly and start a new streak”. And now look, Ive spoken to early.

pslakerfan: I dont see anyone complaining about the refs.. So continue looking longer and deeper but u wont find any…

I definitely think that anyone looking at the Celtics who says that something is rotten there beneath the surface is really overreacting. People were writing this same stuff about the Lakers a week ago too and it was similar nonsense. I just think when you’ve got a team with as many great individual performers as Boston does, there might be the occasional jostling of egos, but it’s nothing to worry about in the long run. The Celtics proved last year that they can make it work. Two losses in a row is not a big deal, especially when the team still has the league’s best record and are the defending champs. There might be some personnel issues in regards to shoring up the frontline depth that need to be addressed by Ainge, but that’s a totally separate issue.

27-4: the leprechauns are still with the team.

Rondo

Are you blipping kidding me. The announcers for the Warriors were basically calling out Rondo to shoot the rock! He never did!

I don’t give a darn if he has 10, 15 or 20 assists, 5, 10 or 15 rbs and or however many steals! I will call for this kids head until he begins to shoot the ball!

It appears to me with the exception of Pierce that the rest of the team was cold last night. These are the type of games where Rondo could’ve taken over and or at least tried to not only drive to the basket but keep teams honest by making them defend his shot.

Pathetic and until he does develop something other then a layup and for crying out loud,,,,,,,54% FT shooter! He will never be a true championship caliber PG in the modern day NBA. I don’t care if we did raise 17 last year, because now other teams will get it.

Rondo's FT

Rondo’s FT% has been around the 70% from memory over the last month, so don’t go overreacting about his talents. I believe he can shoot the ball, unfortunately he doesn’t. I think being guarded by Kobe in the LA game really messes with his head.

What is a true championship caliber PG in the modern day NBA?

That made no sense. Fact is, you did win it last season, and he was obviously good enough. Be happy that you did, because there are 15 other teams mad that they didn’t.

Name the last “true championship caliber PG in the modern day NBA” that won it all. I’m assuming Tony Parker doesn’t qualify to you, so it was Isaiah Thomas. 18 years ago. I don’t see Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, or Steve Nash walking around with any rings, and they had (have) some good teams.

At least he’s racking up the assists, which means that he’s finding the open guy. Take that for what it’s worth.

Any team that makes the Warriors look good defensively cannot expect to win the game, it’s as easy as that.

I think people tend to dramatize a bit too much at this point. The team is what? 27-4? And now we need to change the entire bench, give players who hasn’t been doing well a starting chance and so forth? From my point of view it’s still looking very good.

by Shots on Dec 27, 2008 8:20 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

WildYams is right.

Two losses in a row sucks big time, but it will happen in an 82 game season. Laker fans were all in a tizzy because too many were caught up in the 70+ win hype, and the Celtics were (Are) playing so well. It’s the same thing here. It’s only 2 losses. Sure the loss to the Lakers stings, because of the expectations, but what has really changed about your team? Nothing. Slumps will happen in 82 game season. You’re 27-4. I’ve had to remind plenty of Laker fans that New Orleans, or Houston fans would gladly take our problems.

Personally, I agree with some of you about roster concerns, because as of right now, those needs directly affect how you match up with the Lakers, and most importantly, Cleveland, but it’s only 2 losses after 19 straight. Just stop worrying about 70+ wins, and take the losses in stride. You are the defending champs with one of the best starts ever. Doesn’t that count for something?

Now I never thought I’d be here consoling Celtics fans, but we’ve seen it on FB & G too much, and as a grounded fan, it gets annoying to see these over reactive fans get anxious with every game. It smacks of ignorance. It’s about June, not December, and so far, your team is only continuing where it left off. Chill out.

there’s a lot of blame to go around but start with the NBA and the schedule makers who made the celts play on christmas day and then on the 26th. That has to be the toughest back to back in the season. We’ve been dodging bullets for several weeks now but we had the home court in most of those game and the nba schedule finally caught up to us. I don’t think there’s any reason to panic here but clearly we could be a better team with more size and more scoring off our bench. If we can’t swing a deal for joe smith or PJ then let’s bring back giddens or walker or both. I was hoping for more out of gabe this year but he doesn’t seem aggressive enough when he’s out there. I think doc needs to give him the green light. Conversely Leon needs the yellow light because when the ball swings to him it never comes back. Rondo was clearly off last night with 7 turnovers and ray had a poor game but jackson is a tough cover for him. that guy always kills us. Someone suggested trading for him and I say why not? he would be a perfect 6th man. would scal and tony allen be enough to get it done? anyhow outside of eddie and leon I say everyone else is fair game in a trade

by Red2 on Dec 27, 2008 9:37 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Don't be too quick to assume Pruitt's not aggressive enough.

He was plenty aggressive enough in college and in the developmental league. But now Pruitt’s trying to cope with Doc’s micro-management of the point guard position, which Rondo and Delonte West also had to go through. If you recall, Rondo’s role in the offense used to be: pass the ball off to the high wing, and then park in one of the baseline corners.

The comment about giving Pruitt the “green light” is on the money. At worst, we’ll see that the kid doesn’t have it. Maybe Doc already knows this from practice. But as a fan, I’d like to see for myself. (I’ve already given up hope I’ll ever to get to see anything meaningful of O’Bryant.)

Is Ray Allen Hurt?

The issue is not why House played almost the entire 4th quarter. The issue is why Ray Allen didn’t.

Agree 100% that it’s Gabe Pruitt time. House is too short to be a full-time shooting guard.

The next time Rivers complains about not having enough “length,” he ought to just shut up.

by Brickowski on Dec 27, 2008 10:22 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ray fouled of out the game. Doc did the typical rotation between Ray and Paul at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter. There was nothing unusual there.

However, in the first half when Ray got in foul trouble, they showed him on the bench with one of his shoes off. I wondered at that point if he was having problems with one of his ankles.

Don't sweat it

I’ve never posted here before but I’ve been reading for a while now. I’m a lifelong NBA fan. I’ve really enjoyed watching the celtics last season and so far this season as it is a true story of redemption for KG, Pierce and Ray (indiviudally they had all been written off).
I just wanted to say:
1) Don’t feel too bad, every team takes a night off sooner or later, it is an 82 game season (note to “NCAA is better than NBA ball people”, if NBA players played less than 40 games with no back to backs they would be pumped up for every game also).
2) Additionally, any team at this level can get hot for at least one night. The Celtics just got unlucky enough for this to happen to them. Christmas day the Cavs almost lost to the Washington Mike James’es. Detroit only beat the laughable Thunder by 2 last night. It happens.
I wouldn’t worry about it, not every game is going to come off a back to back and not every game is going to come when your starting center is sitting out. The team’s chances of taking down the ’96 Bulls however appears in serious jeopardy

Consider This

It seems as if the sky is falling in. It’s time to place blame. Might we be a bit realistic about these last two games. They were due to lose sometime. Fatique might be a factor due to the travel circumstances and back to backs. The NBA is an incredibly tough league to play in. The game itself is exhausting, both physically and mentally. The season is long. The schedule is crazy. The travel conditions are insane. It is amazing these guys play as well as they do night after night. Even the best team will have a lull sometime during a season. In addition, we know Perk is hurt because he said so. Do we know if anyone else is hurt (who are not saying so)? It’s not time to break up the Celtics. It is time for us fans to calm down, face reality and not have unreasonable expectations. Does everyone participating in this discussion not have a few bad days at work or home every once in a while?

I agree that people are largely overreacting to two loses in a row. However, there’s a difference between having a bad game, and not giving effort. Last night’s game was the first in a long time where I thought the Cs looked like they were going through the motions in every aspect of the game. This was truly a team effort. From the coaches to nine of the players, they looked pathetic.

by amenhotep04 on Dec 27, 2008 11:30 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think everyone is a little banged up right now

not cool, but its the name of the game…Also not to use this as an excuse but these guys are away from their families during the holidays and are just mentally and physically exhausted right now…hopefully they can re-group in Sacremento, neither of these last 2 games are gonna be a gimme the way we’ve been playing.

Also, I love the balance of this team, but I think it can actually hurt us at times, including on the road in last years playoffs.. we have 3 superstars on the team who dont play like superstars, sometimes you just gotta ride the hot hand, which has been Pierce lately, and hes only getting like 13-14 shots, He should of had 20 shots in that LA game.

rondos jumpshooting problems are really annoying as well, I love rondo as a player, but seriously my man sometimes youre way to unselfish its ridicoulous.

Also, every time Perk is out, KG is lost, why is that?

by TheAncientRivalry on Dec 27, 2008 11:43 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think Perk’s presence allows KG to float a little more, and take advantage of his physical abilities. Without Perk or someone to fill the lane, it places KG in a place he doesn’t want to be.

It’s also frustrating to see on offense KG not getting position in the low post, and needing to dribble his way into position. He has done that a lot recently. To me that’s lack of concentration.

What is a true championship caliber PG in the NBA?

Well, Derek Fisher for the Lakers when Kobe and Shaq were together for one! Two Tony Parker in San Antonio! Chauncy Billups in Detroit for a third example. Now granted when I wrote that post I was exhausted and irritated. Since I woke up and had my cup of coffee I am a little more even keeled. However, what really got to me is that Rondo was given some wide open shots in the 3rd and 4th quarter and he made one attempt. The good is he has made himself into a pass first point guard which I can appreciate. The problem and I HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE! If we had a Chris Paul or Devon Harris type of player they would probably take over some of the scoring woes that occurred in those quarters while Rondo was on the court. Check out NBA.com and compare Rondo and Harris. All I’m saying is Rondo needs to do more then make floaters and layups! Cross our fingers on Perkins bec the defense in the paint suffered big time. Didn’t realize how much Perk would be missed.

Rondo every now and then has those games where he passes up 15 foot jump shots. Last night he did it several times. I’m not worried about Rondo. It is obvious in his game however when he just seems to be lacking confidence or something.

And Laker fans

Complain about Fish’s inability to guard quick PG’s, his poor transition play, and his forcing of shots.

Tony Parker was shopped after he won a ring and Chauncey was considered a shoot 1st PG. Time changed those things.

You’re right. He needs to improve his shot, but the C’s have shown they can win despite that. It’s true, Perk your most important piece on defense. He was reason #1 the C’s beat the Lakers in the Finals. His defense threw a wrench in our offensive flow.

Let's take a breath

First off, I just need to take a moment to reflect on how awesome it is that we have a Celtics team that, when they lose two in a row, we all freak out over. Don’t get me wrong: I am as bummed out as anyone over these losses, but I think it says so much about the quality of this team and our expectations of what they can and should achieve, that these two losses are so upsetting to us.

But let’s keep things in perspective. This team is still head and shoulders above all but two teams in the league — and the other two, teams? Well, I still believe the only team out there that can beat the Celts is…. The Celts! I think Doc made lots of errors in rotation on Christmas, and I think the big 3 were stymied a bit because of that.

On Weds, and last night, these guys are on the West Coast during the Christmas season, and while they are certainly professionals, that’s got to be hard. All of the new dads on the Celts having to spend Christmas away from their respective peanuts, or at the very least having to squeeze their celebrations into a working holiday, its gotta take a toll. Think about having to go away on a business trip on Christmas, or during Hanukkah, or whatever holiday you celebrate, for your child’s first holiday, and it can’t be a pleasant thought. Not an excuse, just something to factor in.

I am replved not to panic until the Celts drop 4 in a row, which I think would be highly unlikely. Until then, I think we need to admit that we need another veteran off of the bench, but let’s not make the mistake of underestimating what this team can do (and has done) without that presence.

I admit that I was surprised that GS was able to best our boys in green last night, but I will be super surprised if this “streak” goes to 3. These guys are just too good for that.

Go Celts!

The Second Unit

I’m not a believer in attacking sports figures personally for their lackluster performances on the court or on the field. However, I think objective rating of an professional athlete’s performance is the right of any sports fan.

The Celtics second unit just can’t cut it. All of this talk about lack of focus misses the point that this unit is severely limited physically. It fields two 6’ 7" post players who are too slow to cover small forwards, who have no game facing the basket (yes, BIg Baby occasionally puts up a tenuous jumper) and who have trouble covering offensive players who have length.

They have a point guard who has weak ball handling skills, who can’t create his own offense, and is too short (he looks more like he’s 5’ 10" or 5’11" than 6’ 1") to cover most guards.

I have always been a defender of Tony Allen, but let’s face it — he’s a liability. How many times does he fumble the ball, commit offensive fouls, and fail to finish at the basket? You can’t say he creates his own offense if he doesn’t score at the end of the play. I wince at the number of high dribbles he makes and am surprised that he isn’t called for it. Someone is eventually going to point this out to the refs.

These guys are probably all fine people and deserve some place in the NBA. But, they cannot play as a unit. Some of them are not talented enough to be in a NBA rotation. They have to be relegated to spot action with skilled starters or serve primarliy as practice and garbage time players.

It’s so funny reading these comments..2 things jump out at me:

1. Just like football, the second string qb is always the most popular player. It’s amazing to see the infatuation with Pruit considering the fact that he hasn’t shown any potential to do anything. If I didn’t know any better it sounds like he’s the second coming of Chris Paul.

2. Chill out. 2 losses in a row and we’re ready to revamp the entire roster. Forget about 19 wins in a row….2 losses and we’re a terrible team!! Ha…it’s amazing. Did you really think we were going to go 79-3 on the season? It’s a race, not a marathon.

Everything is fine…come back from that ledge.

Brilliant Post, uccs

Rivers wasn’t too helpful when he said the “second unit lost the game” in his postgame press conference. Typical classless Rivers’ remarks of yesteryear that we haven’t seen in some time. If he’s going to kiss up to and give all of the credit for the wins to Paul, Ray, and Kevin, perhaps he should not spare them, or himself some of the blame for the losses. I’m more concerned that Rivers’ remarks are a bigger concern than the losses themselves.

4 losses in 30+ games is no reason to panic. I didn’t see Pruitt making the team. Let alone play a prominent role. They weren’t playing great. But they scrapped and was very much in the Lakers game despite some bizarre officiating. They ran into a hot hand in Gasol at the end of the game. It happens. They faded in the second of an intense back-to-back. That happens, too.

We’re not big enough. Our bench isn’t big or experienced enough. We have crazies in here demanding Marbury as some kind of savior for our hapless 27-4 team…God help us. If we want Marbury for our foxhole, maybe fellow flawless character Dennis Rodman is available to be a big. Or this fantasy that PJ Brown can come after every half-season of inactivity in perfect form and save us all from doomsday because we must be a PJ Brown away from the lottery. Blah-blah-blah. I guess the bench contributed nothing in that streak. But they lost the 4 games this team has lost.

Come on folks. Teams are going to be on top of their game every time they play us. We ain’t going 82-0.

Right on, uccs!

From the worst post – frank gibbons – to the best one. Back to back.
frank gibbons, our 2nd unit is not a first unit for a very good reason. But that doesn’t mean they don’t belong in the NBA. Give me a break! You need to see the forest (27-4) through the trees (0-2). I don’t know how many games you’ve watched but Leon and Big Baby get it done most nights. The most over-rated “need” in blogosphere is for “length” . The most under-rated talents are lateral quickness and hands. Leon Powe has to lead league in charges taken per minute (ie lateral quickness) and Big Baby and Leon both play position defense and have way above average hands.

uccs, you are right re. “chill out”. But I do agree with the concensus here that Pruitt should see more minutes. Not necessarily at Eddie’s expense, who can play the #2. Pruitt has shown defense and shooting skill. He hasn’t shown that he can lead the offense. But a year ago Leon was just now getting some real minutes and BBD too for that matter. So I think we will see more of Pruitt and O’Bryant as well (giving the blogosphere its "length").

Calm down folks. Danny and Doc have earned your patience.

by Wildblu1 on Dec 27, 2008 1:29 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Calm Down, Wildblu1 and UCCS, It's Only a Game

Why are you telling me to chill out? You are the guys who are hyper-ventilating.

My remarks have nothing to do with the C’s losing two in a row. Those two loses don’t bother me — the war in the Middle East does. Kids killing one another in our inner cities depresses me. I like to see the Celtics win, but if they lose, life goes on. I cheered them on the year they lost 18 in a row. And I’ve watched most of their games this year.

I never said these guys didn’t belong in the NBA. I said “some of them are not talented enough to be in a NBA rotation.” I love Leon Powe. I love the charges he takes and his tenacity on the boards. But when you have him on the floor at the same time as BB, TA, and House, the team’s ability to create is severely limited. The Celtic’s coaching staff has been down on the bench for weeks. The starters have made comments — even when they were winning.

If length isn’t important, then why did Doc say he “loves length”? Why has the media (not the blogosphere — that’s you guys by the way) made it an issue?

Cowens didn’t have length but he could “jump out of the building” (quoting Paul Silas). I was at the game where he stole the ball from Oscar Roberston thirty feet from the basket. And Gene Shue said that when “Celtics get it trouble, they always go to Cowens”. These remarks were made after another game that I attended where Cowens hit a number of jumpers from the top of the key. The guy could play inside and out. Alvin Adams didn’t have length either. But he was a 6’9’ center who could get Jabbar going with an up-fake from the foul line and then blow by him for a dunk. Dave Debusschere was 6’6’ but made the all-defensive first team six years in a row as a power forward. He covered Wilt when Willis Reed went down. And yet he could hit a twenty-two footer with regularity (“That’s like a layup for you,” cackled Bill Russell to Debusschere after a Knicks game that Russell did the color for). You think defense is limited to taking charges? Lenny Wilkens talked about setting triple-screens for Spenser Haywood only to have Debusschere fight through all of them to frustrate Hayward’s shot. So don’t tell me I’m obsessed with length. But all of these undersized guys could face the basket (and in Cowen’s case, play deep in the post as well).

I have been a TA fan since he came into league. But it’s time for the truth — he is turnover prone, doesn’t finish well, and is a mediocre jump shooter. He has a high dribble. I’d love to see him turn the corner, but he just isn’t there yet.

Again, it’s only a game. Peace.

POB is a POS!

He is a waste of a roster spot. He is lazy and will never amount to anything.

And Laker Fans

I had know idea you were a Laker’s fan. Hats off to you for a good game and I think Odom is better suited coming off the bench. I would say we will see you in the finals but apparently we see you at the Garden before that. I don’t know what rumors were floating about Fisher being on the block but he came through for you guys on several occasions verse the Spurs. Anyway, Rondo has got to learn to shoot and make teams respect that part of the game and if that happens then even with our bench the only team I see beating us is Cleveland. However, that is a tall order.

Stop obsessing about the record..

We lost to GSW because we do not know what are we playing into since 3 out of 4 of their best players are out with injuries.

The only way we can continue streaking is to continue to be consistent with our plays and defensive gameplan. A team who has a lot of variables can cause us problems like the GSW team.

We are not a team who can cope up with a lot of uncertainties—our offense and defense is geared specifically for a match-up, geared for a particular play for a particular team. Variables are not in our equation. That is why the bickering—they met a lot of variables in the last two games. Things they did not anticipate.

As soon as we met them all, we adjust. We continue these march to greatness.

Those are just variables in our team that we can learn and adjust quickly. That is why the turnovers and the bickering.

Cold shooting we can handle, short bench we already know, bad refereeing is a fixed predicament. It was the opposing teams variable. Usually these variables come out of the scouting report. Not the past two losses.

We need to show them that we know how to keep poise if they present us with a surprise. We should have a counter surprise. Play or a defensive execution whatever.

The lakers have a lot of variables this season. Cleveland we already know what to expect. They are the same team as us. But their offense we can handle.

Rondo is not a leader. The big three should agree among themselves who will takeover in a particular stretch. Rondo loses his poise in this situation a number of times.

CelticsJoy

Well at least someone agrees with me about Rondo. Mine as well see what Pruitt can do outside of practice. Or maybe in two drafts look for a PG of the future bec I don’t know where Rondo would be with only 1 orf two of the big 3?
