Celtics Roll To 11th Straight

Perkblazers_medium

  • The Blazers came out strong (seems like a lot of teams do that) but the Celtics imposed their will and pulled away (seems like that always happens).
  • The Celtics defense actually held Portland scoreless for 9 minutes around halftime. (a 14-0 run)
  • The second unit gave away much of the lead, forcing Doc to put the starters back in.
  • I missed it at the time (baby duty) but it seems like KG got on Big Baby in the huddle and Glen Davis put on a pretty emotional display of being upset which the ESPN broadcasters talked about at length.  See video here (while it lasts).

Awesome Game, but the Big Baby thing..

This is just a case of Baby getting ‘the venom’ and not appreciating it, right?
This is nothing to be concerned about, (chemistry) right?

Glen Davis, ESPN and passion for the Game!

Its so unfortunet that Glen Davis had to take center stage today on national television, it should have been a great showing against a very well playing Blazer team, it should have been a look at what could have been with Oden but it ended up being a blowout no one will remember the result of but what Glen did today will be talked about for a long time.

Its a interresting mix of different things that happend, Glen acted out of charecter tonight but he rightfully earned his nickname as the ESPN commentators pointed out live.

What should be talked about aswell is the handeling of the issue by ESPN as i believe they stepped well over the line when they started showing closeup shots of Glen crying with a towel over his head well after the sitiaution had settled, allthough Glen acted wrongly i dont think he diserved what ESPN gave him.

This also shows the delicate ballance of Garnett’s effect on a team, allready early in the 3rd qtr when the bench was playing you saw Garnett sitting on the bench allmost taunting the players on the court making gestures as if they were stupid (pointing his index finger to his head, while having eye contact with someone on the court) we saw the downside to Garnett’s intensity tonight and one of the downsides of Doc’s coaching style aswell as Garnett’ didnt have the right mindset to handle that huddle and Doc should have kept Garnett away from it.

Charecter is built though adversity and Glen Davis’ is going to be hit by a sh*tstorm of adversity in the coming weeks both from the team and most certenly by the new england media and most likely national media aswell.

I dont think anything good will come out of this sitiuation, we need Glen active and this cannot have a positive effect on his play going forward, i will pray tonight that Glen pulls though and handles him self with as much composure and class as Garnett did in the ESPN post game interview.. because he will need it and the team will need it.

What happened?

I watched the game but I missed the Glen Davis incident, what happened?

by TripleThreat on Dec 5, 2008 11:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

3rd/4th Qtr (not really sure when it happend, my brain is sleeping atm as its 5:20 in the morning in Denmark)

The starters were tearing the Blazers apart and the Blazer team looked leaderless on the court and played purely iso’s (didnt score for allmost 9 minutes) the Bench got into the game and played even more horribly than the Blazers did.

It ended up with a timeout called when the bench had thrown away close to 10-12 points and the lead was down to 11.

Glen Davis was visably upset and didnt join into the huddle (witch Garnett was in the center off, not Doc) Garnett went out of the huddle and grabbed Glen Davis and dragged him into the huddle and was visably talking on the ESPN feed, after the first 5-7 seconds of talking Glen reacted to something said in the huddle and walked down to the far end of the bench (the end that was reserved for Pollard last year) very upset shouting at Pruitt, slammed both fists into the ground and started crying.

After that he threw a towel over his head and kept crying for a few minutes and ESPN saw to it they got all of it on camera.

Thats how i saw it anyway.

Thanks for filling me in Dybdal. Thats a very interesting situation. Hopefully what ever happened is worked out and they can move on from there.

by TripleThreat on Dec 6, 2008 10:20 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

if ESPN would have left it alone then it’s a non-issue, but the close ups and then the QA Post Game allowed it have a life of it’s own.

www.espn.com does not mention it in the game review, so maybe it’s just me thinking that this is bigger than it is. Maybe this happens all of the time and the camera guy caught it on tape for the first time.

Looks like sportscenter is going to run with it

I was just watching sportscenter after the raps game, big baby crying was one of the highlights for their game. Another one was the “chippyness” between roy and PP, seems a little sensationalist of them.

Bench tonight

Well i was worried about he bench tonight but Leon Powe came through tonight with his best game of the year. I missed the big baby incident since we already had the game in hand i went to grab an extra beer. But i dont think that should affect us at all?

by Powe'sPosse on Dec 5, 2008 11:12 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

it was nine minutes?

That stretch was about the closest thing to a shutout I’ve ever seen in the NBA. I am going to have to go back and watch it on ESPN360 just to believe my eyes.

Hats off to the team that finished off the Blazers despite the ups and downs (and almost blowing the big lead). The Bird era Celtics had occasional erratic games too.

I do hope that Glen Davis resets and rechannels his intensity. Now will be a good time for that since he’ll probably welcome the relative quiet of the court.

Glen Davis

It appears that Davis took strong exception to some KG remarks at the bench about poor play as Portland started whittling down the lead. Davis’ reaction was, well, “emotional.” He and KG did at least salute each other with a high five at the end of the game.

by Thruthelookingglass on Dec 5, 2008 11:17 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think I have to side with KG here.

The lead is 25 friggin points, starters did thier jobs, bench players roles should not be to allow the opposition back into the game.

But Doc should have handled the huddle.

by teaguelife on Dec 5, 2008 11:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

"But Doc should have handled the huddle."

No he shouldn’t have. Sometimes it’s best when a player steps up and says what needs to be said. It’s Doc’s strength to communicate with his players. Sometimes communication means saying nothing and knowing when to do it. I’m sure Doc will have plenty to say today and it will be said in a way that will have an impact and make this team even better.

On a more game related note

I am concerned about the issue with Paul Pierce, it pains me to see my captain in trouble and two games in a row he hsnt looked like him self.

Blazers actualy looked leaderless at some points tonight, i would not have thought that to be the case as Brandon Roy has gotten so many pads on his back as being a natural leader on the floor that gets his team mates respect by earning it, honnestly i didnt see that tonight when sh*t hit the fan, when they were in trouble they took alot of huddles center court but they fell apart and it ended up being Roy/Aldridge iso’s from there on out for allmost 9 minutes.

Nate McMillan cannot be pleased with Brandon Roy after tonights game.

And i think the game also shows the value of Tony Allen, he would have had an imidiate impact in the 3rd/4th qtr on both ends tonight (thats my belief) but it would not have changed the fact that the bench would have looked poor in contrast to the Blazer bench and thats concerning when you think about a possible Laker/Celtics matup again comming in april as the Laker bench has been off the wall so far with Odom/Ariza/Farmar

by Dybdal on Dec 5, 2008 11:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Lots of people

have looked poor next to our bench.

I agree that it may be a problem for you against LA, because they are very, very deep as well. But you traded all your depth away for KG, and it seems to have worked out well for you. Depth is something that can be rebuilt over time, but it does take some time, after all. As long as your starters continue to dominate, you’ll be ok.

Not a good game for Roy, or anyone else for Portland, except maybe Bayless. When your best players are your backup SF and your 3rd string PG, either you played atrocious, or you ran into a far superior team, or both.

Maybe we’ll give you guys a better game in Portland.

Do you like asparagus?

by jscot on Dec 6, 2008 7:06 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

first on big baby, I agree there is reason to be concerned. sure the bench stunk it up and they rightfully deserved some criticism but kg has to be careful that he doesn’t lose those guys or create division within the team. from my POV baby needs to do a lot of growing up. Pierce had another subar game. 4 turnovers and bad shooting and get this ZERO rebounds. that is very unlike pierce. I suspect he is nursing some kind of injury that he’s not talking about. he tried hard on D. Bavetta also took away Pierce’s game tonight with thosse 2 ridiculoous offensive fouls .

by Red2 on Dec 5, 2008 11:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

comcast coverage did not discuss the baby incident or i was surfing. the blazers were chippy for a while and could not back it up. they are good but too young and seem intimidated by the c’s. another super game from rondo but let’s not overlook ray and his overall play. and perk is mature and oden is not.

by nazzbo on Dec 5, 2008 11:43 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

its a non-issue

two emotional guys got caught in the heat of the moment. happens all the time. espn just happened to broadcast it. no animosity was apparent by game’s end, which the espn crew did acknowledge. this is nothing. baby has been playing very good for us this year. he played out of character tonight, kg called him on it (possibly too harshly), baby overreacted, they gave each other dap at the end of the game, and i’m sure they talked about it in the locker room, issue is almost certainly squashed.

mountains out of molehills

i feel like this is feeding off a tendency to overanalyze everything to absurd degrees. this isn’t a play date on the jungle gym, its a nba team. yes, perhaps kg was slightly aggressive, and yes bbd took it to personally but i have no doubt this will be worked out internally to the satisfaction of all. if it wasn’t being blown up, in ways it shouldn’t be, all over the media it wouldn’t be an issue at all. i don’t know, it seems some people think this is the decline of the roman empire when it seems to be the kind of thing that goes on all the time in professional sports and will be a thing of the past within days, if not quicker. maybe i’m just giving the benefit of the doubt but i hardly see this as the team falling apart and the collapse of a bright era. also, you can’t have it both ways with kg, or pp for that matter, these people aren’t infalliable and the same kg that gets you to work extra hard in practice is going to be the one who calls you on your bs in a game. that doesn’t seem like a bad thing in either situation to this guy.

There defense is amazing. Certainly the front runners for the title this year. Hope to play them better at the Rose Garden.

by Sabonis4Ever on Dec 6, 2008 4:35 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Good game, by the way

Portland is ridiculously talented and young. If McMillan can keep his guys on track (he lost Ray Allen and the Sonics with his abrasive style) the Trailblazers could be THE team in the West.

The C’s starters played well. Rondo and Perk are starting to show some consistancy game to game. If they can keep it up, the Celts could be even better than last season. That’s hard to believe.

As far as the Davis outburst, I thought the commentators had it right. Vets can and will get on the younger players when they are not holding their own on the court. That’s what vets are supposed to do. It can’t be all Doc. The collapse wasn’t all on Davis, but he took it like that.

KG was doing the right thing by pulling Baby into the huddle and then trying to keep him there. A lesser teammate would have been happy to have Davis at the end of the bench.

I agree that this was blown out of proportion, but it makes for good tv, so ESPN ran with it.

What in God’s name are you talking about? McMillan left Seattle after a 52-win season because Portland gave him a bigger contract.

much ado about nothing

Can’t imagine this having more than 24hrs of life..btw..Davis looked more frustrated than teary eyed..could have been worse, could’ve played like Oden …

by Fastbreak1 on Dec 6, 2008 6:05 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know what happened, but I found a curious play. Powe missed, and he was besides Aldrige going back for defense, everyone was already back. Aldrige started sprinting, while Powe didn’t bother to run faster… no one picked up Aldrige and he got an uncontested layup once the ball got to him. Davis had already picked up a man and didn’t notice Aldrige coming. At that moment Doc called POB to get him into the game… soon after a timeout was called.

So, my question is… who was at fault for Aldrige having that layup? Powe for not running back quick enough? Or Davis for not seeing Aldrige?

I ask because soon after in that timeout it was when Garnett called Baby out, so I’m wondering if it was particularly about this play. Maybe Davis didn’t think he was at fault here or something? Don’t know, but worth considering.

by BudweiserCeltic on Dec 6, 2008 6:46 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Powe...

…not entirely for not running back quick enough, but because he didn’t communicate. Defense is a lot about talking, Powe was the one that should have talked there once he saw he wasn’t able to catch up LMA.

by cordobes on Dec 6, 2008 10:45 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Budeiser Celtic has the right information on this incident. The crying started before the actual later blow-up. then the real flare up occured. Kinda sad so much is being made of it. I think Davis will be alright. KG being KG might not always be for the best?

by Bill Walton on Dec 6, 2008 2:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I like that

I like when a vet call a young guy to do the right thing (be in the huddle) and I like a young guy showing that rage because he is playing bad in a game you’re winning.
So no matter about that incident.

by PiensaEnVerde on Dec 6, 2008 6:50 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Non-Issue

Other then giving us and the national media something to talk about it is irrelevant. These players are professionals.

I love seeing this offense run through Rondo more. Perk is showing more all the time also. Ray Allen looks terrific. To see this team basically blow out the Blazers with Pierce playing sub-par show considerable improvement in the overall team.

Expectation that the second unit is going to hold or expand leads every game is not realistic. The argument could easily be made that substitutions should have been made quicker to prevent the run. Portland is a very deep talented team and they made a run.

As stated earlier there is considerable value to Tony Allen in this second unit.

Very impressive win for the Celtics.

by Hondo on Dec 6, 2008 7:47 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Portland will be great!

First, I’m a die-hard Celts fan, but the realization has to be that Portland SHOULD be a much better team in several years. This assumes:

 No major injuries.

Oden learns how to spend his fouls and upfake.

The Coach doesnt lose his team someway.

Free Agency doesn’t rip it apart. (Tough for the ‘smaller towns’ like Portland to compete with the LA and Miami glitz and the NY money). (Same for Boston BTW).

=

This also assumes Danny has no more magic left in three years to replace RA, KG, PP in the next three years. (If Walker, Gibbens and/or Tony Allen make a JUMP in skills, it would not surprise me to see RAllen traded after this season).

Hi,
defense, defense..this is the key to be the champion again

by Mirk on Dec 6, 2008 8:48 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

The second unit missed Tony Allen last night.

As for the rest of the game, Portland looked a little road weary. Oden picked up two very cheap fouls and Roy obviously hurt his leg, even though he went back into the game.

But IMHO the key to the win was the superb defensive job by KG on Lamarcus Aldridge. Aldridge hit a few jumpers, but otherwise had no impact on the game.

by Brickowski on Dec 6, 2008 9:21 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

no it wasn't the road...

We (Portland) got too pumped for this game, and then dropped the ball. that’s pretty much it, aside from Boston Being a freight Train of a team….there’s just no stopping em, The Defense was amazing, Portland get’s it’s fair shares of open looks, but there just weren’t all that many of them last night, Stifiling!!
The rotations, the communication (I think it’s more of kg screaming at people and them responding out of fear ;) ) but yeah they are good….I thought we were good but now we’re just ok, and well….defending champs and all, but wow. That was scary… I feel sorry for my TV. it took a little more verbal abuse than it should have.

Go Portland, and we’ll be seein you short green blooded munchkins again in 11 games. ;)

Two Comments

1. The C’s are now making up plays while the game is going on. I loved it when late in the 4th quarter Rondo was yelling at Perk to go to the other side of the line (which he did) and then did the alley-oop thing with KG. To me the great thing about it was that all the C’s knew what was going on while Portland didn’t have a clue.

2. I think Nate McMillan set a poor example to his team by not putting his starters back in when the C’s did in the 4th quarter. The Blazers cut the lead and had a real chance to win with plenty of time left. It’s bad when a team quits, but worse when the coach quits. And from what I could see of the Blazer’s bench they either couldn’t care less or didn’t understand the situation.

by TrueGreen on Dec 6, 2008 10:48 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

portland fan here,

I think that “some” of our bench didn’t have a clue, cough, FRYE cough, but on putting our starters back in, it wouldn’t have helped. if portland had done that, rivers would have just stuck his starting line back in, and it’d been off to the races again….

I think nate did brandon/blake/lamarcus a big favor by sitting them as long as he did….

Cuz after all that smack brandon was talking about getting embarassed by the celtics last season, HE wanted this game pretty bad, and if nate stuck him back in, and brandon couldn’t deliver….might have set us back a few games…

this team depends on brandon for leadership and when he gets frustrated the team follows suit…had nate stuck brandon back in…we may have seen a part of brandon that is better left on the bench…

Nate keeping him on the bench didn’t do brandons pride any favors but he may have salvaged any pride that was left…..

We’ll see how it all pans out on the 30th, but I’m betting it’s a totally diffrent game….hopeing more like it, after last night.

ya’ll got a great team there in bean town, enjoy it.

Interesting to have Portland fans on Board

My seats are close to court and I watched all the Portland players closely. They LOOK great. Not sure about Blake at point. Seemed he held the ball too much (maybe Celts D). Roy, Aldridge, Batum, Outlaw, 2 Spaniards, Pryzbilla – very complete looking team. But we demolished them. We are looking very good and we didn’t show them Tony Allen. I’m sold on Oden as a nice kid, easy to root for, but he looks like Sam Dalembert, not Bill Russell. Still, they have scary raw talent. The first quarter was a game. We had a hard time getting open looks.

by Wildblu1 on Dec 6, 2008 12:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

yeah, bostons D.

Portland ain’t the GREATEST at getting our own shots or cutting off screens, but we do look great at it against mediocore teams, bostons D was just too swarming, usually we see double and tripple teams thrown at roy/oden, and at least seconds of doubles on aldridge, and the doubles were apparent when they would come…save the L.A. and last nights game. Bostons guards would just keep following their guy, and take a swipe at the ball when passing, sometimes stick around for a second or two, then spin find their man and get back to it, and it happened fast…like,….really fast…cuz I thought portland was getting pretty good at it but…boston is better (keep in mind I’m one of them one team wonder fans who don’t pay enough attention to other teams to know any better) but wow….

I really believe right now in the N.B.A. there’s three levels…boston, l.a.‘s, and everyone else that would get to the playoffs…and scrubs..and the division between boston/L.A and the rest of the playoff teams is just sickening…. I’m hoping grandfather clock is in our corner….

:)

but good luck this year and hopefully next season (god willing this season) we’ll see you all in the finals.

Blazer fan here.

That was some amazing defense. I wish the Blazers could play against that type of defense every night. That would greatly expedite their maturation process. Regarding the Oden comment. Remember, he was raw coming out of college and he is coming into a new league off of microfracture. Give him a year or two and you will see shades of Russell and future multiple winner of the defensive player of the year award.

I'm a little confused by your tactics
