I thought pornography was forbidden on celticsblog.

I hope that after today’s game against the Spurs people can stop defending Doc’s decision to start Scal. BBD showed today that he can play defense just as well and give so much more on the offensive end. I hope once Perk and KG return we see more of Baby and Powe and no more Scal. Scal is just awful. I’m sorry but the negative things far outweight the few “little” things Scal does. The opposite is true for BBD.

by Bankshot on Feb 10, 2008 4:32 PM EST reply actions

he is a “fan favorite” after all

by Jeff Clark on Feb 10, 2008 4:32 PM EST reply actions

he is the least talented on this team but everyone puts out a lot of effort, including scal. the human foul saver.

by nazzbo on Feb 10, 2008 5:11 PM EST reply actions

Scal did have that one sweet bucket today. Granted, I think it was more luck than skill, but he’s scored more NBA hoops than any of us ever will.

And, last game his defense was phenomenal. He’s not as great as Doc and Danny try to sell him as, but from time to time, he’s a positive contributor.

by Roy_Hobbs on Feb 10, 2008 5:13 PM EST reply actions

How about ‘Err Intangibles’? Seriously, I like Scal’s effort & hustle, but let’s hope he regains his spot on the end of the bench. Ahead of Pruitt, but behind Pollard.

by LuckyNumber07 on Feb 10, 2008 5:14 PM EST reply actions

C’mon Roy, admit it, Scal was terrible.

by Bankshot on Feb 10, 2008 5:15 PM EST reply actions

Hey, I am one not often to rag on Scal because I feel that his on the court contributions or lack of contributions are irrelevant. (He doesn’t play enough minutes to warrant any impact on the actual outcome of the game)

But today, Scal was really bad. Aside from his one lucky shot (which should not have counted, it was a 24 second violation)….he looked lost on offense and defensively he wasn’t his usual solid self.

I thought both Powe and Davis outplayed Scal and deserved more minutes.

Scal, even though he starts the game, he doesn’t play enough minutes because Doc trusts Leon and Glen Davis more.

I also think Scal is least fan favorite….even Waltah McCarty was more popular.

by LB3533 on Feb 10, 2008 5:22 PM EST reply actions

C’mon Roy, admit it, Scal was terrible.

I didn’t get to watch the game as closely as I would have liked today, due to some other issues happening during game time. When I was paying attention, I saw Scal looking pretty terrible on offense (except for that one lucky basket). I just didn’t pay attention enough on the defensive end to have a solid opinion of his play today.

Against the Twolves, though, he was pretty darn good on defense. Still atrocious on offense, though.

by Roy_Hobbs on Feb 10, 2008 5:23 PM EST reply actions

He was active on the glass, and made that one shot whilst the time clock was expiring, but that’s all he’s good for. He sucks at everything else.

by TradeProposalDude on Feb 10, 2008 5:24 PM EST reply actions

I think Scalabrine may lead the league in falling down on the floor per 48 minutes.

by The Walker Wiggle on Feb 10, 2008 5:28 PM EST reply actions

I get a kick whenever a national announcer labels Scal a “fan favorite.” I guess if you consider a mascot a fan favorite. He’s a perfect 8-9 rotation guy and situational defender on a good team though, and when we’re healthy that’s exactly where he rides.

by NYDan on Feb 10, 2008 5:52 PM EST reply actions

We beat the defending champions and the best thing you can come up with for the front page is ridiculing a role-player for his limitations. I am extremely disappointed, Jeff.

I just LOVE it when people lay that “I’m disappointed in you Jeff” trash

here’s a hint: I DON’T CARE

I am disppointed in Jeff too – he thought of one of the funniest nicknames all season and I didn’t ;D

Wonder bread anyone?

Sorry I have an opinion. Even more sorry that you don’t like it. And yes, I’ve read the 5 lines on the game, they were really great.

Here’s another hint: I really don’t care if you care. I am going to speak up.

Somebody is getting a little too big for his britches! Do your advertisers know that you don’t care what your customers think Jeff?! Not sure why Koz’s statement was such that he needed being ripped. Maybe it hit a little too close to truth. I guess you are the boss though…

by EJPLAYA on Feb 10, 2008 7:53 PM EST reply actions

I would say that the phrase ‘’I DON’T CARE’’ is much more condescending. I read his comment as a polite way of stating he thought the topic was picking on a guy who gets personal attacks on here every day. When you know how many people on here hate Scal with a passion, you knew the direction would only be to ridicule a player that works hard and has class. Obviously it is your site and you have every ability to say whatever you want, but inciting a bunch of guys on here is a poor way to get good discussion IMO. I guess though we know what you think from the post above about the rest of our opinions… Just a friendly observation. You usually hold a very moderate line of dialogue when you jump in. That surprised many I am sure…

by EJPLAYA on Feb 10, 2008 8:18 PM EST reply actions

seriously, am I the only one who finds the phrase “I’m disappointed in you” to be incredibly condescending and insulting?

this was supposed to be a fun post, it really is a shame it has degraded thusly – maybe that’s my fault and I’m sorry if it is

by Jeff Clark on Feb 10, 2008 8:20 PM EST reply actions

Regarding Scal: If anything, I’m a pretty vocal supporter for him. I am not above poking fun though, and when Doc goes out of his way to harp on his “intangibles” to justify starting him over guys like Powe and Big Baby, it further opens the guy up to a chuckle or two. Seems pretty harmless to me and considering the chants of “Scal-a-brin-e” in the stands, I’m far from the first to have fun at his expense. He’s a grown man and paid well to do his job. He can take it and I honestly think he takes it all with a good sense of humor.

by Jeff Clark on Feb 10, 2008 8:26 PM EST reply actions

The picture shows Scal to be 3 inches off the floor. Great
special effects. He’s the 10th man on a good team. Doc starts
him and hope he gives the team some decent defense and a few
rebounds and maybe he’ll even sink a 3 pointer. He inbounds the
ball well after the other team scores.

I apologize, I didn’t mean to start a troll war here or sound condescending. You’ve done a commendable job starting up this blog from a virtual zero, and this is, obviously, to the benefit of all of us readers.

Scal is what he is. I don’t think that piling on him has him playing any better, as a matter of fact, it looks like it is exactly the opposite. I mean, this is funny alright, but still…

by kozlodoev on Feb 10, 2008 8:59 PM EST reply actions

I’m disappointed in how quickly you’re offended by someone saying they’re disappointed in you Jeff.

Hilarious nickname Jeff but couldn’t you have found a picture of him shadowing the ball or something…

by PlayRyanGomes on Feb 10, 2008 9:08 PM EST reply actions

As a long time Scal apologist I must say he was terrible today. He shoots with no confidence. He does hustle hard but he doesn’t deserve minutes over Leon and BBD. Scal got humiliated by the Jumbotron contest (for those of you there)and the crowd’s reaction. But with KG out we need to get 10 mins from somebody, Leon and BBD were working very hard.

by Wildblu1 on Feb 10, 2008 9:28 PM EST reply actions

a picture is worth a thousand criticisms…or something like that.

by Andy Jick on Feb 10, 2008 9:40 PM EST reply actions

Tony Dungy says (paraphrazed) great hustle with little talent is worth far more than great talent with little hustle. For all you people who “hate” Scal, maybe we should trade him for Blount! Scal dives on the floor after balls, always tries to get the ball to his team mates under the basket…He is a CELTIC and until he is not a CELTIC I will continue to support him. I believe his hustle is playing a role in keeping everyone involved and energized (as opposed to an A. Iverson who was too good to show up for practice, or a M. Blount who played when he felt like it or when he was playing for a contract.) I, for one, would appreciate a little respect for the job the team (with Coach Doc Rivers)is doing. As far as I can tell Scal has not cost them a game yet, and the bottom line is looking pretty good.

Maybe it is just that some people want others to think they are smarter or more in tune with the situation than those in charge. How far up the NBA ladder have they worked and what kind of inside information do they possess? Or is this just a case of some people are not happy unless they are complaining. Who do they suggest replace Scal in order to have a perfect season?

What’s the record with Scals starting since KG’s been down?

by TrueGreen on Feb 10, 2008 9:54 PM EST reply actions

What’s with all the Scals stuff on a day when we had a great win. The TEAM won. Scals is a member of the Celtics. That automatically makes him great. Even Duncan would be great if he were a Celtic. Scals will get to the HOF before Duncan. I happen to be a Scals fan and do think he contributes. His offense would be better if he played more. But this game was won on defense and Scals plays defense. I think we should be talking more about the announcers saying PP shouldn’t have his number retired. Then to back up their argument they show a thing with the top five scorers in Celtic history (I think PP was 4) and all those players have their numbers retired and are in the HOF. Just hope we can start losing if only to stay off National TV and can be spared those awful announcers. Another observation—-great officiating today——let them play and were consistent at both ends.

by TrueGreen on Feb 10, 2008 10:05 PM EST reply actions

maybe tony dungy could use scalabrine as a third tight-end?

by Andy Jick on Feb 10, 2008 10:16 PM EST reply actions

scal had nothing to do with the win today or basically any of the wins, truegreen, terrible argument. hes the worst player on this team. The only reason he gets a free pass is BECAUSE we are winning, if we werent winning he would never get a scal-a-brin-e chant. It amazes me that he starts or even sees 5 minutes on this team. Unless Powe or Big Baby are in foul trouble, I never want to see him.

Hilarious picture though Jeff haha

by Jimmy Toscano on Feb 10, 2008 10:32 PM EST reply actions

jimmyt, Scals plays a different position than Powe and BBD and Perk. Scals wouldn’t start if KG were healthy. Powe, BBD, Perk expend alot of energy guarding the Bigs. Their numbers need to be minimized for them to be rested at the end of games, where Scals does NOT play. “It’s who finishes, not who starts”.

TrueGreen, exactly what position does Manboobs play? Just curious.

by iowa plowboy on Feb 11, 2008 12:07 AM EST reply actions

I just wanted to clear this up a little… Alot of us are in the gametime chat for almost every game and think of something different to poke fun at each game. The announcers called Scal a “fan favorite” and “rebounding demon” and after scals terrible flop shot a few people came up with nicknames for scal. “Air Tangibles” was absolutely hilarious and the overwhelmig favorite so we said there should be a thread dedicated to who could make the best “Air Tangibles” photoshop contest. Its not condescending or a complete insult to Scal. It is just plain funny, and Jeff good job at the photoshop.

by selwonk23 on Feb 11, 2008 12:25 AM EST reply actions

he’s terrible on a pretty consistant basis. its embarrassing that the broadcaster really thought that hes a fan favorite

by celticsmaniac on Feb 11, 2008 1:09 AM EST reply actions

Scal did some good things in the game today. He rebounded well early in the game. He rotated well on defense. He was awful on offense, but he is what he is. He starts saves some other folks some fouls early in the game. Granted, fan favorites is a stretch, but, thankfully he’s no Marty Conlon.

by JAM on Feb 11, 2008 2:41 AM EST reply actions

Scal only rebounds when the ball falls directly into his hands. He has a terrible habit of batting at the ball, even when he could grab the ball. I think the Scab critics don’t like him taking minutes from Baby or Powe, both of whom can play the 4. Also, the announcers constantly calling him a fan favorite probably lit some fires as well.

by halfman/halfoyster on Feb 11, 2008 5:46 AM EST reply actions

all this talk about scal— i am feeling faint. i am not a scal or a doc man, but i realize what doc is doing with scal with kg out and it has been effective. doc has to be careful, tho in not giving him too many mins.

iowa plowboy said:

If you’re refering to Scals I would say probably say a 3/4 tweener, more 4. He’s not a Center. BBD and Powe are Centers, regardless of size.

by TrueGreen on Feb 11, 2008 9:00 AM EST reply actions

BBD and Powe can play the 1,2,3,4,5 better than scals can. Thats my point. They are better basketball players. They should be coming off the bench before Scal. Posey could play PF and be lightyears better than Scalabrine. Hes a scrappy defender rarely at times and dives on the floor, but so do a lot of guys on this team. Halfman/halfoyster made some great points.

by Jimmy Toscano on Feb 11, 2008 12:31 PM EST reply actions

jimmyt- BBD will likely be a better basketball player in the future than Scal due to his talent level being higher. He is not presently a better basketball player. A few more games like yesterday and he very well may be there. Powe on the other hand is a better center than Scal is, but Scal doesn’t play center! Why compare players at different positions. Neither one of them can play the 1 or 2 or 3 better than Scal can. They can’t dribble the ball, defend on the perimeter, or hit outside shots. Stop overstating. It ruins the rest of the points you are trying to make. It is hard to agree with your point on Posey, which is valid, when you make rediculous ones.

The only reason that Posey doesn’t start in place of Scal is that they need him on the second unit when Ray and PP go out.
