Kidd Traded To Dallas

ESPN Reports:

The deal -- salvaged from talks on a three-way trade with Portland that developed and fizzled quickly two weeks ago -- has Dallas sending 24-year-old point guard Devin Harris, veteran swingman Jerry Stackhouse, the expiring contracts of center DeSagana Diop and swingman Devean George and guard Maurice Ager to New Jersey for Kidd and forward Malik Allen.

Sources say Dallas will also add the league-maximum $3 million in cash and send its first-round draft pick this June as well as a first-rounder in 2010.

The Nets are expected to buy out Stackhouse's contract immediately, which could enable him to re-sign with Dallas if he waits 30 days, and ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard reports that the Nets and the Mavs are likewise poised to complete a separate trade that will send swingman Antoine Wright to Dallas for a future second-round pick.

Update: Hold your horses.  It sounds like Devean George (of all people) is blocking this trade from happening.

When are the Nets moving to Brooklyn?

This is ridiculous.

The NETS just got better with Devin Harris in the long term, I think.

Can’t stand Kidd, bye-bye.

Can’t see how Dallas will be better?

Devin is pretty darn good.

I bet the Nets are regretting signing Wince Carter to that long term deal.
They would have had a better chance to rebuild quicker without his new contract.

When does Kidds contract expire?

we only have to worry about one west team. which one will it be? i think la and sa and the suns, if not denver and utah will be better than dallas.

by nazzbo on Feb 13, 2008 5:06 PM EST reply actions

wow, harris, diop, stack (who apparently will be waived and end up back in dallas), and 2 #1’s? that is a lot to give up for kidd. he’s still great, but i can’t imagine him having much more left in the tank.

The West is crazy good. Hopefully they will beat each other up ;)

Have we given up hope on a back up PG. I haven’t heard anything in the last couple days. What about this, Kyle Lowry of one of the Memphis PG’s they have 4 young ones over there.

by NYCeltics17 on Feb 13, 2008 5:11 PM EST reply actions

And how is Kyle Lowry better than anyone we already have?

by kozlodoev on Feb 13, 2008 5:22 PM EST reply actions

doesn’t New Jersey have a proposed trade on the table to swap VC for J. O’Neal? They should pull the trigger on that now that too.

by Jeff Clark on Feb 13, 2008 5:23 PM EST reply actions

They should, if it’s on the table. The question is why would Indiana do it – they already have Granger at this position.

by kozlodoev on Feb 13, 2008 5:27 PM EST reply actions

What an absolute steal for the Nets.

by StartOrien on Feb 13, 2008 5:29 PM EST reply actions

Kyle Lowry will end up in Philly I think
Cassell is still a possibility but I think there is just as good a chance he ends up in Phoenix or Denver (in a trade, pushing the Celtics out of the equation)

I read Portland is shopping Jarret Jack. He’s young (but with more experience than Rondo though I’m over the veteran thing I think it may be a little overrated Cassell was about Rondo’s age when he won the title and both Stoudamire and Cassell got schooled by Rondo) he’s 6"3 200 lbs and he plays decent defense and anchors Portlands’s second unit is a true point guard and can score a little. I think we can get him on the cheap (trade exception and maybe a future second round pick or something) and Portland is gonna get rid of him regardless whether he finishes the season there or not (making room for Rudy Fernandez and Oden) I hope we make a move for him. Him and Rondo in the rotation could shore up PG for years to come.

Kidd, Collins gone from NJ…good!!! Now if only R.Jefferson could leave as well, i could finally stop hating that team…

 :D

by greenwise on Feb 13, 2008 5:36 PM EST reply actions

About the Kidd trade, I think this still leaves the Mavs vulnerable in the frontcourt to: Bynum/Gasol, Shaq/Stoudamire, Duncan/other guy. I’m not sure J. Kidd can compensate for those matchups.

by Hillcrestwildcat on Feb 13, 2008 5:46 PM EST reply actions

jarrett jack would be a great pick up by the c’s, though it’s not likely to happen :(

by buckets on Feb 13, 2008 5:47 PM EST reply actions

So, we can forget about another contender/pretender in the east. More talent leaving. Miami, NJ in rebuilding mode. That leaves Toronto….

by johnnymost on Feb 13, 2008 6:10 PM EST reply actions

Toronto is going nowhere, and DC is getting Arenas back soon (may hurt or help not sure)

by Hillcrestwildcat on Feb 13, 2008 6:17 PM EST reply actions

In a weird way, this all seems to be indicating a swing from West to East in terms of conference dominance. Think about it. Because of hyper media pressure, Eastern teams have been overpaying for over the hill veterans to try to stay in the playoff hunt in an already watered down conference, while western teams have been forced to rebuild from the ground up or be very good (an argument that either Ford or Hollinger touched upon in a chat last week). But now we’ve seen Shaq (over the hill) move west for a younger Marion, Kidd (over the hill) west for picks and Harris, even Iverson could be included (sent for cap space and picks) if he declines soon. Then look at the youth in the East: wade, lebron, and dwight are all eastern conference. The top Western teams won’t last forever (Duncan’s getting up there, Kidd won’t last forever, Shaq and Nash won’t either). If Eastern conference teams are smart and patient, in a few years the eastern conference will pass the west.

Somewhere, Lebron James is screaming.

by teaguelife on Feb 13, 2008 6:26 PM EST reply actions

Why couldn’t that F-Wad Chris Wallace have gotten a deal like this from L.A.? He freakin’ gave Gasol away for chump change and let the Lakers have a run at a championship for the next five years.

by The Real Large James on Feb 13, 2008 6:27 PM EST reply actions

yeah this is just an amazing trade for New Jersey. I mean really amazing. There is no way they could hav gotten more and they shouldn’t have gotten that much for Kidd. And yeah it goes to show how incompetent Wallace is

by wahz on Feb 13, 2008 6:47 PM EST reply actions

I might be in the minority but I don’t like that trade for Dallas. Kidd is good but he can’t give you scoring even if he tried and giving up Diop might hurt the team in the playoffs against the likes of LAL big front line, PHX’s Shaq and SA’s Duncan. If they think EDampier is the answer, they are in for a surprise. The Dampier/Diop tag team worked very well in the past. Dallas needed nasty..i.e. RArtest or a player along those lines.

by cocofan on Feb 13, 2008 9:12 PM EST reply actions

Dallas made the trade that the Lakers should have made. Each of the three Western wannabes— Phoenix, LA and Dallas— made major moves to try to get past the Spurs, who indeed look vulnerable. IMHO Dallas improved the most.

So you do think Greg Popovitch will call this trade a steal too? LOL, maybe the Spurs should keep their mouths shut after letting Luis Scola go for nothing. Now that was the real steal. Houston has won 9 in a row and if McGrady is healthy, they are as much of a threat to the Spurs as anyone.

Well, the Dampier/Diop tag team may have done a good job on Duncan a couple of years ago, but last year it couldn’t get out of the first round. As for the Nets, they have to unload Carter ASAP, and maybe Richard Jefferson too, who won’t be happy playing for a rebuilding team.

Oh I hope this devean george blocking the trade thing is true-thats like me blocking the trade. Who gave devean george a no trade clause?

No they don’t have that. NJ made all the running on that deal and came up short. They need to get rid of Carter quickly but I doubt Ratner (he’s the owner right?) clears that. He wants VC for Brooklyn and to get fans in the building. Lot of rumours floating around that his extension was more Ratner than Thorn.

[quote]I read Portland is shopping Jarret Jack

They’re not. It’s a lie. Pritchard isn’t shopping anyone. He might be by draft day. But not now. Won’t happen. He isn’t going to mess up their chemistry and their youthful situation. He’s also likened Jarret Jack to a young Terry Porter and Jarret is one of the most vocal leaders on the team and happy with being a backup. It’s way too early to write him off, he might spend the next decade in Portland. Anything can happen with their PG situation but nothing is happening now, it’ll be draft day at the earliest.

This is a really bad trade for NJ.

They should have taken expiring contracts instead of the assortment of players they’re getting from Dallas. They already have an interesting PG prospect who, while worse than Devin right now, has a higher ceiling because of Devin’s limitations.

I still think NJ should have offered Vince and Kidd to LA for Kwame and Odom. Cleared their cap and started rebuilding. They can’t rebuild until two of their big three are gone. Another trade has to come. And that trade has to bring more cap space than this one did.

How ugly is NJ’s offense going to be now? Vince is the only good passer in the starting lineup and Williams is the only other on the team. They both need to dominate the basketball to be good passers also which is double trouble.

At least they’ll be better defensively. Here’s hoping RJ and Vince finally learn how to play together.
