Although I still thought that Howard had the best dunk of the night with his behind the backboard toss, the superman dunk was not one of the greatest dunks of all time like the announcers wanted us to believe. He didn’t in fact even actually dunk the basketball. If you look at the angle from the side, the only reason he threw it down into the hoop was because he was still about a foot and a half away from the rim when he was coming down. Had he held onto the ball and tried to actually slam it in, he wouldn’t have even touched the rim. From the back where the announcers and the table were I can see how they couldn’t see that, but as they replayed it from other angles I am surprised no one said anything about that.
The dunk contest is becoming a joke, literally. All people are trying to do is to do crazy things with props etc. because they can’t come up with anything new. If that is the intent, then fine. Just don’t try to compare this to the dunks of Jordan, Dominique, Carter, or some of the greats. Unfortunately I think Dee Brown and the pumping up of his Reeboks started all this…
