Is KG Still Hurt?
Kelly Dwyer suggests that the Celtics actually brought KG back too early:
We remember Gilbert Arenas trying to play through the same injury in 2003-04 and failing miserably, so watching Kevin Garnett struggle through the first half (and entire game, really) with an obvious abdominal strain is a little hard to take. KG's our favorite player, and though he overcame the pain (17 and 15, three steals, three blocks in only 30 minutes), this is worth paying attention to. Boston: you have the East locked up. Think about sitting him for another week. This isn't the sort of player that is aided by limited minutes. He's too hyped up. As usual, things don't work the usual way with KG

Yeah, he doesn’t look hurt…. he looks rusty… he misses shots that he normally makes….. being off for 3 weeks will definately make you rusty…. by the end of next week, he’ll be back to his old self

If KG’s still hurt, we can take the heat while he returns to health. His timing looked off again against GSW last night.

He looked slow to me, I saw him get beat on the defensive end where he looked like he just couldn’t move, he was basically unable to guard guys at the top of the key, not so sure that’s rust or lingering pain
That’s what concerns me (and the rest of Celtics Nation) the most…

I find all the “still hurt” discussions to be funny. Anyone who has had any significant pull or tear knows that it “still hurts” for many months. Basically you play when you can tolerate the pain and are reasonably sure you can compensate for the injured area when you play and have a high probability of not further injurying the area. I “hurt” my hand 3 months ago and it still hurts all the time but I can do “most of the stuff” I normally do on the court.(I really sucked for a few weeks). KG will feel the effects until next season. However for now, it is just about getting in game shape, getting the timing back and learning to deal with injury.
He looked slow to me too. I wonder what other people who think he loks fine are seeing that Im not. He was slow in his jump outs and slow in getting back to his man. That threw everyone off defensively, IMO.
Also, he was getting blocked by Chris Webber for God’s sake, repeatedly.
I don’t know if it’s rust or lingering pain. I’ll leave that up to KG and the Dr’s. But he obviously isn’t himself.
I thought he looked twice as good last night as the previous. Considering that was back to back games, I bet he looks back to normal within 2-3 more. This is what we are going to get out of KG in that last year of his contract!
The play that I thought showed his rust or at least second guessing of himself, was when he got that board towards the end down low and hesitated. Then got blocked/fouled by Biedrins. Pre-rest he would have thrown that down immediately in his face.
Jay- were seeing rust which is rapidly going away, your seeing “hurt.”
he went from “i can’t remeber how to play this game” to “typical double doubl” in 2 games. that to me says player shaking a month and a half of not being on an NBA court off, not a hurt player.
the reason he looks a step slow on offense and defense is that both are based on timing. you lose your timing when you sit for a month. thats why professinal sports have preseasons. if guys could just flip the switch after months away, then they would do that. but you cant.
Much ado about nothing. The C’s weren’t desperate to get him back, they held him out 9 games and went 7-2 during that time. Clearly, they were OK taking their time, and they did not suffer from it in the standings, so why would they all of the sudden “rush” him back? They have followed a conservative course of action up until now, I saw nothing other than lack of timing or rust that would suggest Garnett not be out there. And by the way, not that this should be a reason to bring back KG early, but to say they have the East wrapped up is a bit presumptuous, being only up by 3 games on Detroit with 30 to play.
This is not the Red Sox and this is not September, where we will just coast the rest of the way, rest the starters, and then turn it on for the playoffs. Unlike baseball where working a hitter back in your lineup is fairly seamless, basketball is played with teammates sharing the ball with each other on every possession and helping each other on D. The fit/mix/chemistry is a far more important consideration in basketball than baseball because of how the game is played. Again, not a reason to bring KG back early, and I don’t think they have, but to think the East is “wrapped up” and we are all set until the playoffs start, is not understanding how basketball is played. I think there has been a temporary one step back with KG being mixed back in, of course in the long run they are better with him, but they were getting used to the style they needed to play with him out the last 9 games. Integrating him back in may cause things to stutter initially, but give it 5 games and we will be back to the powerhouse we were before when KG was playing.
“East locked up”? I don’t think so. We’re looking at 3 straight losses Friday night unless the defense picks up. KG looks fine – big difference between the Nuggets game and the Warriors game.
