6th Star Candidates

For my latest WickedGoodSports article, I thought I'd play off the 6th Star promotion poll that CSN is running.
You’ve seen the commercials. By now you should know the drill. CSN is running a promotion poll to decide which Celtics player should be named this year’s 6th Star. (By voting you could win playoff tickets or a $300 gift certificate to Sullivan Tire and Auto Service) I thought it might be fun to break down some of the candidates for the award and discuss it here.

To me (new to the Celtics, so I’m probably dead wrong), “6th star” sounds like best non-starter. Got the starting 5, then the “6th star”, no?
Well, based on your run down, if Perk and Rondo are in fact eligible, then I thinks it’s gotta be Rondo, no question. Outside of getting burned by a few guards (Crawford/Robinson, Calderon, and even Telfair) after coming back from those hamstring and back injuries, his perimeter defense has been very, very good. Also, when KG went out, Rondo took a much bigger role and ran the offense as a true point guard… and it was beautiful to watch. He’s kept a bit of that responsibility even though KG is now back, and it’s no surprise that the team has been absolutely blowing teams out lately.
Perk has been a manchild the last two weeks, but still was very up and down (mostly down) before that.
Now… not including starters #4 and #5… it gets a bit tougher. This team, 6-12, thrive on complementing not only the starting 5, but each other. Baby and Powe, roughing it up inside. Eddie Money and Posey coming in with the outside shot and energy list. Tony Allen being the main bench player to come in and enforce the defensive mentality. Pollard and Scal providing the emotional support from the bench. How do you choose just one of these guys as the “6th star”.
Well, if forced to do it, I have to choose James Posey. I love the hugging routine, I love that he brings championship experience and playoff toughness, I love his defensive versatility, he’s been hitting from the field and outside slightly better than Eddie House, and Posey has to be up there with Shane Battier in the ‘charges taken’ stat. To me, he has been the most valuable bench player in a group of indispensable guys.
Dwest – 23 min pg 7.5 pts, 3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.91 turnovers, .91 stls .39 blocks .405 fg% .36 3pt%, .698 free throw %
House – 19.5 min pg 7.5 pts, 2.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, .95 turnovers, .77 stls, .13 blocks, .411 fg, .386 3pt, 90% free throw%
I have been a huge fan of Dwests since he came and love his hustle, but House has also come in with a huge amount of hustle and with the stats above for each this year, he has hardly been a downgrade. Better assist to turnover ratio, better shooting % in all areas… House has been a huge pickup for us this year and should be included in these discussions!
This award fits Leon Powe perfectly. He exemplifies what Celtic Pride is all about.
That being said, the last few 6th star winners have been traded after winning it.

What about Scal getting the best 13th man award.

You were the one that threw DWest out there as the Celtics 6th star, so not sure why that is an issue to you now.
Here’s the problem with your rationale. He played 21 minutes a game while he was in Seattle. He managed to get up 7 shots per game, which he hit at a rate of 38.8. 56 of those 250 shots were 3’s which he only hit 33.9. He chose to take the shots that he did. He turned the ball over 2 times per game. He shot 67% from the free throw line. Did Seattle require him to shoot free throws with his left hand, or put more arc on his shots from 3? You can’t blame that on Seattle. Sure his numbers are a little bit better on this squad, but not by much.
My point of the previous post, was that you are so down on everything about this team, that you would prefer to nominate someone else’s player rather than pointing out some great jobs by our second unit. Backhandedly following it up by mentioning Powe doesn’t negate the slight to our hardworking current team members.
We have a few, including Powe, that could be thrown into the discussion. Delonte would have likely been one of them had he still been here. House on the other hand IS here and he is putting up every bit the stats in less minutes out there.
mcpu40- I’ll take my only true scorer on the second unit scoring 7.5 pts per game in under 20 minutes a game and shooting 40% from three point land any day of the week! His job is to come in and jack up shots. That is what a shooter does. Ray Allen does the exact same thing. Of course long rebounds come from three point shots and his 2.2 boards per game more than compensate for the 2.5 misses at the three point arc. Not sure how anyone wouldn’t like his game off the bench…
EJPLAYA,
You’re right, House’s stats aren’t that bad…they’re actually pretty okay as you point out.
To me, I think it’s his overall mentality that I can do without.
He’s important to the team, I suppose.
I just can’t stand the catch-shoot-miss-defensive rebound sequence.
It appears to happen a lot when House is involved.
I’d prefer House pass it down low to the real sixth man, Powe, for a hard fought bucket plus one.
Good post though, as always, you’re points are well thought out, backed up, and valid.
At 57% shooting, I agree that Powe could use a few more shots, though his better shots seem to come from putbacks vs. dropping it down to him in the low post. If we run that play for him he seems to get blocked an awful lot. He isn’t a gret passer out of the post yet, so often you just hope he gets fouled. I think that maybe slashing to the basket and dropping it off to him when the defense collapses is the most effective thing. Unfortunately the only one that can really do that effectively is Rondo and they rarely are on the floor at the same time. TA has the ability to do it, but as I have said way too many times, he doesn’t lift his head up to see the open man. THAT is where I think Powe should get more shots. Maybe Posey should start putting the ball on the floor and going to the rim a bit more. We don’t really want House to as he is too small.
I think you and I agree a lot more than we disagree. You do a nice job prompting dialogue on here where many just throw our irrational points and refuse to back them up or respond when their false comments are disproved… Keep up the great posts in this dream season so far!
hmmm like others pointed out, rajon and perk aren’t really “6th man” unless you expect them to be displaced by Cassell and Brown, which i think everyone agrees won’t be the case.
i say posey, considering the fact that the re-emphasis on defense is what allowed this season’s resurgence to take place, and posey along with KG are probably the biggest reasons for better D on the court (off the court, it’s Tom Thibodeau)

EJPLAYA, I’m with you still on Eddie House. mcpu40, relax will you on Eddie. He brings energy when he comes in and I think most fans love that “instant offense” aspect he brings. He is coachable. He now gets it across mid line promptly. He is, with Posey, part of the kharma of the team at game start. Who wouldn’t want a teamate like that.
Brick wants to dismiss Delonte’s stats in Seattle because he was injured. But, D West being injured is what you get with him. Eddie HOuse has been a net addition to the team I think
For 6th man I vote for a tie – Big Baby and Leon. CSN can keep their prize. Both of those guys exceeded way more than any of us dreamed and Doc has used them both very well. Two 2nd rounders…you could make Ancient Red’s point and go for Danny based on BBD/Leon.
