This Is Not A Test, ...It's Practice
The Celtics are in the middle of a road trip against some of the best teams in the West. They also get to play Phoenix and New Orleans (twice) in the next week. And for good measure, the plucky Sixers will get thrown in the mix. Most teams would consider this a huge test. Not the Celtics. This is not a test. This is practice.

Rivers is known as a players’ coach and a good motivator. He’s going to need to be creative in ways to keep his players interested over the next month or so.
Jeff, you speak about Doc’s motivational skills in your excellent article. With this Team I don’t think Doc needs to be a motivator. The players motivate themselves. I see Doc here as a calming influence, maybe picking up a player that is down, maybe getting Rondo on track when he gets derailed at times—same with Perk and maybe BBD. I remember KC Jones being asked the question about motivation when he coached the C’s. His response was to the tune of “If I need to motivate these guys we’re in trouble”. And he didn’t need to motivate them, maybe a word once in awhile. I think Doc is in the same position with this team. I think his biggest problem is finding out how to use Cassell and PJ. From what I’ve seen I don’t think PJ has enough time to get ready to give big minutes. I think Powe and BBD will be more important in the playoffs with PJ’s main role being a mentor to them and Perk.

Am I the only one who read this and thought about Allen Iverson’s practice rant?
Go Celts
No, I thought of it also. Maybe AI was right. I think it’s more important to save legs than to practice. But, there are times when you need a full team practice to sharpen certain areas. With a veteran team this is probably needed at a minimum. We talk about not tiring out players with excessive playing time, but you can also rest them by not having hard practices all the time. Just the traveling wears these guys out, much less the games. Add practice to the schedule and your asking for problems.
