Where was Posey on Joe Johnson? Where was Tony Allen? There supposed to be our defensive stoppers. Ray Allen has done a great job all year on defense, but you got to go with your stoppers in situations like this.

TA only JJ.

And the team needs to make its Free Throws!

Can somebody remind what great player we got for Joe Johnson? Stunned is one word. Disappointed is another. We better win game 5 or else we will be a laughing stock for years to come.

i’m amazed doc did not switch allen off johnson at least two plays earlier (instead of screaming damnit ray, try coaching). but it’s the playoffs and weaknesses get exposed. allen’s d and doc’s coaching turned out to be lethal…

i say we boo the team when they come out wednesday.

by anything on Apr 28, 2008 11:05 PM EDT reply actions

tony allen should have been inserted to try his defense on jj.
bad coaching….
eddie house was a disaster,
i think we looked ok at times but give the hawks credit…. we now see doc has alot to learn to go up against a popovich or phil jackson….
this is not the regular season & doc is now exposed….
the celtics are in a dog fight.

by tommyfan on Apr 28, 2008 11:08 PM EDT reply actions

So, the last 34 points for the Hawks have been made by 2 players, Joe Johnson and Josh Smith.

We have the third best defense all.time.

Is there any way to blame Doc for this?

by Casperian on Apr 28, 2008 11:09 PM EDT reply actions

Rondo owns the 3rd quarter. Runs the offense, creates for others, makes things happen on defense. So the logical thing must be to sit him down until the lead is completely gone and then when he comes back in go back to the pass and cut to the corner offense. Bibby comes in 4 minutes before he does. Apparently big minutes only affect players who in their early 20’s.

Does anyone for a minute think any team coached by Doc Rivers or Flip Saunders is going to beat the Lakers or Spurs. You are giving 20 points in coaching alone.

On a side note once my blood pressure has lowered. Pierce appears to still be hurting from that fall. He just isn’t going to the hole with the same consistency, or effectiveness.

A dog fight is right. Any confidence we had is gone, so even if we happen to move on to the next round, which is questionable now, we have many, many things to work on.

I say we cheer our brains out and get behind a team that needs a boost.

by drkalloch on Apr 28, 2008 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

I’m all for throwing some blame at Doc, but you gotta look to the players as well on this one. They played like absolute sh*t! By my estimation, they played about 10 minutes of solid basketball. The rest was all Hawks…..I’m depressed.

by reggielew35 on Apr 28, 2008 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

yes. you blame doc (and tom) for not making any kind of adjustment, rushing to double, changing match-ups, anything. the hawks ran the same play over and over and ray could not stop him.

by kuberski on Apr 28, 2008 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

Exactly kuberski, a coaches job is to make adjustments when things are not working. Where were they?

by NoraG1 on Apr 28, 2008 11:16 PM EDT reply actions

This is why Celtics fans wanted Nurse fired along time ago! To avoid situations like this in the playoffs!

by AdrianoMG6 on Apr 28, 2008 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

game time coaching is not docs forte…& the playoffs are all about that.
paul does look hurt. if doc play EHouse anytime soon i’ll throw my bottle at the tv.
i blame the loss on docs line up in the beginning of the 4th & doc for putting them in….otherwise we played good enough to win.
WE now must support them & give our team energy going into gm 5.

by tommyfan on Apr 28, 2008 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

The Celtics may end up winning this seris, but their confidence has take a major blow. Game three was a dunkfest, now game 4. This is an 8 seed playing a team that won 66 games. Maybe Boston slips and loses one game, but two? C’mon. Boston should be dominating the East and they can’t handle Atlanta? There’s an old saying I’d use when I coached track—“you’re only as good as your last performance”. Right now, Boston looks like the 8 seed. I guess there is enough blame to go around, but game 5 has to be a win. If they don’t do that, forget the banner.

by mulder32 on Apr 28, 2008 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

I am so angry right now. Sputtering offense, No calls, terrible D. What happened? Ever since we shortened the rotations we have played worse. I can’t even watch SportsCenter right now. I want to spit.

by oliveira311 on Apr 28, 2008 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

all you have to do is look at how the spurs handled business against the suns and how we can’t handle this hawks team.

looking at how easily joe johnson got it done do you think there is anyone on this squad who could stop lebron? dwight howard?

by anything on Apr 28, 2008 11:22 PM EDT reply actions

Doc didn’t coach well enough to adjust to Smith and Johnson in the 4th quarter but this loss lies squarely on the shoulders of the players. Poor D, lousy rebounding. Is it just me or did anyone else notice they haven’t been able to finish around the basket in the last 2 games?

While I’m at it, free throws have always been PP’s achilles heel, this regular season notwithstanding. Came back to bite them in the butt in this game.

FIRE BLEEP’N DOC that’s it.. okay I’ve done a 180 on him… Okay I believe in you now BRICK….. FIRE DOC….

I almost broke my frig’n TV tonight….

What have the players and coaches forgot this is the playoffs and not the regular season…..

I can’t take it… FIRE HIM NOW…….. simple as that… let someone else coach…

I was so tired watching his motionless face when Atlanta would counter and he sat there like a BIG LUMP

Okay… I’m in Brick’s corner now with FIRING HIM

FIRE THE REFS. We deserved to lose, but this series has been the most poorly officiated I have seen in a while. Extremely frustrating.

Doc Rivers: The worst playoff coach in NBA history.

by Bankshot on Apr 28, 2008 11:28 PM EDT reply actions

I’m not stunned. Hate to say I told you so, but I started a thread early today saying that the Hawks really worried me after game 3. I saw alot of problems with their athleticism. I was particularly concerned that we were not putting the right guy on Joe Johnson. I feel bad that I was so dead on. I don’t think Tony Allen could have stopped him either, it will require a team effort, but Ray was just a sieve.

by footey on Apr 28, 2008 11:28 PM EDT reply actions

lol i’ve been saying Fire Nurse since he choked away our homecourt to the Pacers 3 years ago and lost that series in the first round. The guy can’t coach in the playoffs and gets outmatched everytime! This is nothing new. It’s a given.

by AdrianoMG6 on Apr 28, 2008 11:28 PM EDT reply actions

Look. Doc is a freaking disaster. There is a reason he has never won a playoff series and why his teams had never won two straight playoff games until this year. How many times did Atlanta run that same play with Johnson which led to a 5-7 foot shot from the hoop. Total disaster. Doc is going to coach this team to the most embarrassing playoff series loss in NBA history.

by vinnie on Apr 28, 2008 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

Nurse is the Willie Randolph of the Nba. Both my teams are stuck with these geniuses!

by AdrianoMG6 on Apr 28, 2008 11:32 PM EDT reply actions

People are laughing at the Pistons and Celtics right now. I like Doc throwing Eddie House into the mix in the fourth quarter when the guy has played about 5 minutes this whole series. The players share the blame, but Doc really may be the worst playoff coach in NBA history. If they lose this series, he should be fired 5 seconds after it is over.

by vinnie on Apr 28, 2008 11:35 PM EDT reply actions

Thibedeau should replace Nurse. He praises Perk all the time and called him the best low post defender in the league! Where was perk down the stretch? Oh ya, Nurse doesn’t like Perk. Even though we were getting killed on the glass, Nurse continued to sit him. Thibedeau wouldn’t let this happen. He’s the reason why our D was fantastic all year, not NURSE! Nurse is a coaching disaster, and Mike Woodson is even exposing him lol. Mike freakin Woodson!

by AdrianoMG6 on Apr 28, 2008 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

What happened to Perk. He only got 25 minutes. He was playing well when he was in. I guess that is why Doc sat him??? Doc’s in game coaching ability is really bad…it’s sad really. The boys in green need to shoot about 500 free throws tomorrow too. I enjoyed watching the regular season…this crap…not so much!

by Celtix on Apr 28, 2008 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

The C’s won 66 games because they had a bench that could score. Doc drastically mixed with the rotation, and because of it, the bench has had limited scoring for most of the series. It is not to late to go back to the regular rotation and give this team a boost.

by geraghty on Apr 28, 2008 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

I think Doc made some coaching mistakes. Posey has to be on Johnson at the end of the game. But that said, how many soft shots is Garnett going to throw up in a game? Pierce misses the bunny. Allen misses a lay up. I could not even count all the missed lay ups and free throws and that’s not on Doc.

by liam on Apr 28, 2008 11:41 PM EDT reply actions

I’m beginning to think that Nurse hates the Celtics and that he could care less about us losing. I bet most of the Celtics players don’t even like the guy and think he’s a tool.

by AdrianoMG6 on Apr 28, 2008 11:41 PM EDT reply actions

We know Pierce is in a gang. Maybe Nurse is in that gang too, seeing as he brought the whole team to watch American Gangster in the preseason. Pierce throwing out the Nurse team gang sign in game 3. What a trainreck this is turning out to be.

Players can take some blame but not all of it. Doc’s coaching has had alot to do with these losses. No adjustments and changing the lineup which obviously has hurt the team and the chemistry. I say if it is not broke don ‘t ’fix’ it.

by NoraG1 on Apr 28, 2008 11:49 PM EDT reply actions

The only chance the C’s have now is if Perk Decks Nurse, and Thibedeau takes over the job.

by AdrianoMG6 on Apr 28, 2008 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

Hey guys, I’ve been a member for a while, but I rarely see the need to post since you all usually cover most of the things I have to say.

Anyway tonights game irritated me and after checking out this blog, I can see you all are upset as well. However, don’t go off the deep end just yet. Yes Doc is a crappy coach, but we’ve known that for years. Don’t worry about these losses, the 3rd game was just won by better team play on that given night, and tonight had a lot to do with some inconsistent calls.

The national media doesn’t quite get it, nor do some of the local guys (cough Bob Ryan), but this hawks team has the thing that gives the Celtics trouble. No, not athleticism, all NBA players a freakin athletic. What the Hawks have are multiple talented wing players. The Celtics can deal with teams that have one talented wing and sometimes two depending on who it is, but this Hawks team can throw Johnson, Smith and even Marvin Williams out there at teams and it creates matchup difficulties. As several posters have called for Posey switch assignments or put in TA or for PP to up his defense, those are all right on. The problem is that having TA in there with Posey really sacrifices some offense, and Tony doesn’t always have his head in the game.

I’m confident the Celts will win in six, but tonights loss hurt more because of the inconsistent officiating. I know its standard in the NBA for stars to get the calls, but I hate how a Joe Johnson offensive foul is only called when it happens against Ray Allen (as opposed to Leon Powe). I know Stern was in the stands and hopefully he’ll recognize the inconsistent calls and at least address the reffing rotation for the next series.

Casperian is in Pierce’s gang as well.

by AdrianoMG6 on Apr 29, 2008 12:04 AM EDT reply actions

Doc sucks. Granted. But all year everyone has been on the Tom T bandwagon saying he handles the defense himself. Everyone was reluctant to give Doc credit. Well now its time for Tibs to take the blame. That was absolutly embarassing. Denver would have found a way to get the ball out of Johnson’s hands. And the one time we forced someone else to shoot Perk didn’y block out (old news) and the Hawks got an O board. On a different note, has Pierce gotten the ball on the block a single time all series. What made us successful during the regular season was Pierce down low and KG and Ray spotting up for jumpers. Where did that go?

by YouveBeenPierced on Apr 29, 2008 12:11 AM EDT reply actions

Sick to my stomach. Celts score 5 points in the first 8 minutes of the 4th quarter. All the balme can’t be placed on coaching. We STUNK in the 4th on both ends of the court and just couldn’t keep it together. I do agree however, that inserting House and not playing TA for Defense at all after tonight after we got schooled in game 3???
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! I have to go lie down. >:(

how friggin dumb are are all of you? Did you really not know know Doc sucked this bad? How could you not know, seriously? As horrified as I am at least I am amazed you all know the game this badly? I mean really?

by wahz on Apr 29, 2008 12:16 AM EDT reply actions

gotta get to the free throw line, make aggressive plays at the basket; you look at most of the regular season victories versus the hawks and you see more free throw attempts for us. also, how about a little composure?! the green is looking pretty “green” in the fourth quarter as of late.

by AdrianoMG6 on Apr 29, 2008 12:19 AM EDT reply actions

we got outplayed. This game was more palatable than game 3.

But at least Doc’s true colors are coming out. He’s a terrible strategic coach. Ray on Joe was bad. Even though it doesn’t matter much, I’d love to hear him explain his thoughts on taking out KG for House on that final defensive play . We needed

1. A steal
2. Hopefully a long, quick pass, otherwise we’re chucking a 50 footer.

Who’s most likely to get a steal and throw a good long pass to one of the 4 other 3pt shooters? Oh yeah, KG.
