Wyc To Fans: Thank You

Wyc Grousbeck sent me this email just now:

I said in an interview that the Lakers must have known they were doomed the minute they stepped on court for Game 6. Because of the Boston fans. It was just incredible in there. So thanks to all the fans, particularly the CelticsBlog diehards. I mean it. And to everyone who dogged us for sticking with Pierce, Danny and Doc, and trading for Ray and KG: we are taking measurements for rings tomorrow...and you aren't invited! All in good fun guys. Deep heartfelt thanks for being Celtics fans. Let the debates and the fun continue - here's to a repeat. WG

Could have done without the ‘I told you so’, but still a nice, quick response from Wyc. The C’s are fortunate to have Jeff et al. with celticsblog.com—and Wyc is smart enough to know it.

Ownership got rewarded for their spending this season, and so I see no reason for them not to continue to back up Danny as he builds on success. That puts Wyc in very good company with John Henry and the Krafts, and we are fortunate to have his team running the Celtics trust.

Actually I loved the I told you so. Too funny.

I liked it too. Wyc is a true fan. I heard him on WEEI one morning after the Cs were crowned champs. He said the first thing he did was read the LA papers to read all the whining in LA. LOL

yea, he said he was joking, no problem here.

thank you wyc, for making the best season of my life possable :D

Great letter Wyc. Being from Minnesota, it’s great to see some likeable and intelligent people in one of my favorite teams’ front office. We don’t exactly have that in Minny. Well done Boston management, you deserve a ton of credit for banner #17.

by BonK on Jun 24, 2008 11:29 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wanted Doc fired and Pierce traded, so the “told you so” from Wyc was well deserved, very funny. I’m glad the front office didn’t listen.

It’s so great to have an owner who is also a fan. Of course all owners think they are, but Wyc actually connects to us as a fellow fan.

by afflatus on Jun 24, 2008 11:47 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m very happy to have Wyc as the owner of this team. The thank you to the fans is a very nice gesture. He’s a breath of fresh air after Thanks Dad Gaston.

Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical for awhile that he’d pay the luxury tax, but he came through in a big way. With the vast majority of NBA owners, we wouldn’t be champions right now.

(I also like the fact that he pays attention to Celticsblog. I just get the feeling that most owners completely ignore their fans bases.)

by Roy_Hobbs on Jun 24, 2008 11:52 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wyc earned the right to say I told you so to anyone he wants.
Of course since I was one of the few who had no problem with Paul(love him), Danny (bleeds green), and to a lesser extent Doc (Hey, his players love him and play hard for him. That’s saying something), does that mean I’m invited to the ring fitting? ;D

Lets not stop at a repeat. Lets go for a 3-peat. I’d like this Celtics Era to make a big mark on NBA history.

What an honor it is to have an owner that is as much a fan as all of us…someone that we could actually go drink beers with and talk ball.

Hey Jeff whats with the… “and you arn’t invited” comment by Wyc? I totally respect that he sent that message out, but what is he trying to get at by saying this?

by munjman on Jun 24, 2008 12:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

munjman, that’s just his way of saying “I told you so”

by Jeff Clark on Jun 24, 2008 12:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hey Jeff do you run this site as a full time job, or on your spare time?

by munjman on Jun 24, 2008 12:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I appreciated that my team was owned principally by a guy who attended every game that I was at (and I went to 17) and who cheered unabashedly just as I did. My wife never cheers and when she bellowed along with “Beat LA” during game six and Mrs Grousbeck waved the whammy at Kobe shooting free throws I knew the stars were aligning. Very good sign when the women slip over the edge.

Go get em Wyc!

This has been great ownership and they’ve had to hear and read a lot of poison from all sorts of people. If he wants to add a little light hearted dig, he’s more than entitled.

Great statement, Wyc. Thanks for contacting the blog. It’s great that you understand the diehards can be found here.

We’ve poured over every box score and news article since 86’ with no payoff. Thanks for orchestrating a dream year for us. You were a bigger man for sticking with Dannie/Doc and we all see the wisdom in it now. Kudos to a sound plan & the forbearance to see it through. Oh, and can we have Scal’s ring?

by Benjamin Barak on Jun 24, 2008 1:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Also Wyc. There’s no way to express enough thanks to you, the other owners, management, coaches, players, and staff for winning Banner 17.

by Gant on Jun 24, 2008 1:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

:o I never doubted the owners, never Doc, never Pierce, never Wallace, never Pitino…more than 275 times, so now can I get a ring, too?

Well, Mr. Wyc et al. certainly troll the internet getting a pulse of the fan base. He’s a smart dude to respond in this fashion and in this forum. Well done. Have I told you that I still can’t believe this? I keep watching that “Rondo-ed” Reebok ad on Boston.com just to pinch myself.

by The Real Large James on Jun 24, 2008 2:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wyc thanks for number 17…and since you read the blog..who are we picking at #30 ? ;D

by Fastbreak on Jun 24, 2008 2:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wyc, thank you for the thoughtful email. You and the Ownership Group are true Celtics. After what we fans have been thru with ownership and management of this storied franchise, it is a relief to know that the “Tradition” is once again in good hands. You and the owners got things rolling by re-instating Red as “President For Life” and then by hiring Danny Ainge to run (and really run) basketball operations. You and the Ownership group deserve our support and much success in the future.

by TrueGreen on Jun 24, 2008 5:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually I thought Wyc’s comment was amazingly appropriate in this forum. If he said it in an interview, that’s over the top, but here he responded the way most of us would in the banter that is part of blogging in general and here in particular (though I think here is a little more civil than a lot of places).

I was (perhaps naively) confident that they would spend when it made sense. One of Danny’s first jobs when he got here was to get them out of a salary cap mess. I couldn’t see why they would spend and put themselves back there unless there was a clear payoff.

I LOVE the fact that Wyc is a TRUE Celtics Fan, and not just a Business Man! “We’re 8 and 2!” now we’re 9 and 2 Wyc. Keep up the good work. :)

I was a doubter. I wasn’t sure this ownership cared about winning basketball games.

I was dead wrong.

Look forward to seeing you guys in Oklahoma City next winter, Wyc.

You have to spend money to make money. But you have to spend it
wisely. The Knicks and Mariners come to mind as teams that spend
but don’t get much bang for their bucks. It is nice to have an
ownership group that has some personality and enthusiasm after
Thanksdad who seemingly had a charisma by-pass operation. I hope they can sign Posey. He is a player that good teams need to help push them to the next level. A real winning type player.

I just appreciate how Wyc Grousbeck can walk the walk and talk the talk of a true fan, keep connected with the fan base, and maintain an open, receptive public face without turning everything into some weird smug, loudmouth, showboating cult of personality like Mark Cuban. Granted, I’d rather have a Cuban-style owner than the old miserly coot who won’t pay for talent, but I think Wyc does a superb job of being the public face of the business while keeping the real focus on the team. Kudos on a job well done, and sincere congratulations for this well-deserved, well-planned, well-executed victory.

Is this a joke? I hope not because it would really be cool if the owner was having some fun at our expense. Not to mention he is right on the money.. :D ;D

This is exactly what Danny did. There were plenty of free agents out there who weren’t worth the money they were asking and Danny didn’t bite. None of those players would have brought us closer to a championship. When quality became available Danny jumped on it and the Owner’s backed him with the dollars. This is doing it the right way.

I´ve said it before, but it´s worth to repeat it: the owners deserve all the credit they can get for paying all this fun.

To renew my offer:
If you´re in Germany, and wanna talk about the Celtics, send me a PM, I owe you a beer. ;D

Thank you.

I love it any time owners and players show their appreciation to fans. I thought Pierce had a great thank you to fans right after they won, and that Wyc doesn’t just issue statements, but seeks out the fans in our own domain—this site.

Speaking of which, I just want to once again thank Jeff and Gant and Steve and Bob and FLCeltfan and everyone else at celticsblog and all the posters for keeping the conversation going in the offseason.
