Celtics make offer to Corey Maggette

Marc Spears is reporting that in addition to making a MLE offer to James Posey, the Celtics have made an offer to Corey Maggette.  Considering they need an eventual replacement for Ray Allen, this would certainly be an intriguing pickup.  Maggette averaged 22.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

He's always been considered immensely talented, going back to his days at Duke when he was Dick Vitale's very own Mr. Maggette-oooh.  The question is whether you'd want him over Posey.  It sounds like if they can sign either one it will only be one, not both.  Posey has certainly become a fan favorite after his postseason performance, but Maggette seems like a special talent, which could help carry this team as the veterans get older.  He wouldn't be the bedrock of the team, but he'd be quite a talent to have.

I've added a poll.  I'm a Maggette guy, but I'm sure Posey has plenty of supporters.

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up

I like Maggette for three reasons:

1. He rebounds well for his position.
2. He gets to the line a lot (seriously look at his game log) where he has been deadly – 81.9% – over the course of his career.
3. He’s in his prime – 29 in November.
4. And he allegedly uses “Are you ready for Maggette?” as a pick up line.

At the same time I don’t see it happening for several reasons:

1. He’s looking for a huge pay day. Probably more than the MLE.
2. He frequently complained about coming off the bench in LA and I would imagine he’d have to do that in Boston and take a reduced role in general. Although there is a big difference between coming off the bench for the Clippers and doing so for the defending champs.
3. I’ve never heard much about him as a defender.
4. Pierce, Allen, and KG work in part because their respective games are different. Maggette’s reminds me a lot of Pierce, minus the range.

There’s a good chance the Celtics end up with neither. Crazy couple of days of late.

Green Bandwagon: Celtics '08 or bust. Are you on the bandwagon?
