Celts Make Offer To Maggette

The Celtics have made contract offers to two forwards: Their own free agent, James Posey, and Clippers free agent Corey Maggette, sources told the Boston Globe. The most the Celtics could offer is the mid-level exception (about $5.8 million), and it's doubtful that they could sign both players. The terms of the offers were not disclosed.
Posey averaged 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds in 2007-08 and was a NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidate in his first season with Boston. The two-time NBA champion was a strong leader for the Celtics and opted out of the second year of a two-year deal on Monday to become an unrestricted free agent. Maggette averaged 22.1 points and 5.6 rebounds last season for the Clippers and played for Celtics coach Doc Rivers in Orlando during the 1999-2000 season.
Didn't see that one coming.
Update: One report says that the Spurs are front runners for Maggette.

Wow Maggette would be a great fit, how about a 22 ppg scorer coming off the bench.Yikes! I also would love to see what kind of improvements he makes on D with Thibodeau working with him.

well, maggette would certainly be able to provide scoring off the bench, something the celtics did not have on a consistent basis last year.
plus, it might mean pierce can play fewer minutes a game, which might help keep him rested for the playoffs. or maybe even extend his career a year or two.
but if the celtics are only able to get one of posey or maggette, i hope it is posey.
Hi everybody,I come from Italy and I’m a proud fan of Boston Celtics since 2001/2002 season.
Reading this rumour I have thought about the opportunity to have a scorer from the bench like Maggette.
I really don’t believe that we’ll take both of them ; we have to begin our transactions with the firm of Posey than, we’ll see.
Bye Celtics’fan. See ya soon.

How we can give up Ray Allen? For Brand?
I hope you’re joking, it will be a silly move for this team.
Anyway, imagine if Maggette will agree to the contract with us :o

There’s no way he accepts the MLE.. But if he does I’m going to be so stoked. One of my favorite guys in the NBA.
I’d much rather have him than Posey. He’s basically Paul Pierce-lite.

The C’s could sign Maggette to a three-year, mid-level deal. He could get 25-30 mins coming off the bench, then start for a year when Ray Ray’s contract us up. He would still only be 31 when he hit the market again, in time for one last big pay day. The C’s might be thinking they need some insurance in case Ray Ray starts to decline quickly.
I hope this is just a move to get Posey to sign for 3 years at the full MLE. He shouldnt be pushing for a 4 year deal with us to begin with so maybe he’ll wise up after this. He needs to understand that at the end of the day its not about money. Its about his team that he loves here in Boston and its about winning. If he truely wants to be a Celtic than he will take the 3 year deal and smile about the fact that he is playing for the best franchise in sports.

Maybe Danny can figure out a way to do a sign and trade with LA Clippers by giving up Scalabrine (and Giddens or Walker??) and still resign Posey. That would also mean that House would likey not be resigned being replaced by Maggette. LLE and vet minimums still available to sign a Scalabrine replacement and Backup bigs and pt guard. I don’t think we carry 15 into the season.

I dont see how Maggette would even entertain an MLE offer when he is already making 7 mil a year. The guy had a great year last season and could be looking at 9 – 10 mil a year contract. Im a little worried however, two rumors could be pulled together into one. Sign and trades of Maggette and Livingston for Ray Allen would work money wise…Livingston is an off the bench point guard and Maggette steps in as the starting SG. Maybe we could also keep Posey if this was the case??

This doesn’t make any sense unless they are doing a sign and trade with Ray. Maggette is not a MLE guy. Our MLE will go to Posey.

Maggette has to sign for the MLE somewhere. He can no longer be signed and traded as his rights will be forfeited by the Clippers so they can sign Davis. So he will have to sign for the MLE. The kid is considerably better then Posey although in a perfect world we would sign both..

Now I’m gonna tell you a question :
how many opportunities are there that Maggette will come to Celtics
and that we confirm Posey?
I don’t believe at this possibility but I hope ;D

JHTruth is right. All of these people who are saying “Maggette isn’t an MLE player” have to do the math. The Davis signing blindsided him. He can’t do a sign-and-trade now. All he can do is go to a team with cap space. Since Philly and Memphis (and maybe the Warriors, if they decide to cut Ellis and Biedrins loose?) are the only teams out there, and Memphis isn’t signing a swingman with Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo on the roster, that leaves Philly or the MLE. It’s that simple.
Orlando and Texas have a big advantage over Boston because of their state tax situations, but Maggette might decide a 1-year MLE deal with the best team is his best move. San Antonio is probably a better fit for him lineup-wise, but his path to the finals is easier in Boston.
Signing Posey to the full MLE would be a mistake, I think. Especially if it’s beyond 3 years.

There’s no comparison. I’ve seen Maggette play a lot. His game is offense, offense, offense. Posey is the guy they need to seal the deal with. Then sign Thibodeau to a lifetime contract.
