Russell Will Write Book About Red

The AP Reports:

NEW YORK -- Basketball great Bill Russell is working on a memoir about his friendship with the late Red Auerbach, the Boston Celtics coach for whom Russell starred on a long run of championship teams.

"Red and Me" will be published by HarperCollins in Spring 2009.

"Arnold Jacob Auerbach passed on Oct. 28, 2006 -- almost 50 years from when I joined his Boston Celtics," Russell said Monday in a statement. "I felt a tremendous sense of loss, a huge void in my life. There was an empty space in my psyche where a special person had been. I thought about that at Red's funeral. And the fact that there was no logical reason why we ever should've become friends, because we came from such diverse places. I thought about how much I missed his friendship."

I can’t wait to read it……..I haven’t been here since the Celtics won and coming back to hear this is great news……

Just enjoying the summer and the championship…… ;)

Awesome. Look forward to reading it.

Loved the way Russell stepped into the void left by Red’s passing during this season. I know Russell was very happy to see the Celtics play “Celtics Ball” this season, but I also think he stepped in for Red.

Go up for Glory was like a basketball epistle from the Bible and Basketball for the Player, the Fan and Coach by Red was great as well.

I’d love to see some in put from Cousy as well. I love it when Cousy talks about Arnold.

When Red died, I kept on asking in this forum when will Russ talk about it. I never really saw a public statement from Russ. Typical though for him. He always did things his own way and had a healthy suspicion of the media. Great to see this in the works. If you’re reading this Bill, don’t rush it. And, make sure your daughter reads drafts.

I am torn. A part of me wants to buy the book, since I already own “Go Up For Glory” and “Second Wind”. The other part of me heard a Celtics front office man saying “Bill has become greedy”, so I just hope he is doing that in Red’s memory, and not because of the money.

I’m also on record as saying that the Bill Russell/Kevin Garnett interview thing made me very uncomfortable. Sorry, Bill, like you, I’m Jesuit trained.

An interesting point, REAL LARGE JAMES.

I said the same thing here about the Garnett / Russell interview.

It was uncomfortable to me also.

russell owes red. he’s also bright, insightful. i hope it’s not just a bunch of anecdotes, as red was more than that. he was a narcissistic sob, who would have loved the whole ubuntu thing, because even tho his ego was monumental, he was smart enough to know the team and the game came first.

I don’t know if anyone has said this but there was an hour long special I believe that was shown about a year ago on NBA TV called “Red and Me” and it was Russell doing exactly what he’s going to do with the book. It was actually on again just last week and I caught the last 20 minutes of it. Very good.

When Greg Dickerson was interviewing Wyc before the DVD release, Wyc said that they had made an increased offer to Posey. The speculation was that they might have offered him a 3rd year. Wyc wouldn’t eloborate. Greg also reported that Danny was sitting and talking with Posey at length.
