" New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - The New Orleans Hornets bolstered their defensive presence by reportedly coming to terms with free-agent James Posey.

The New Orleans Times -Picayune reports the contract for the guard/forward is for $25 million over four years.

The 31-year-old Posey played last season for the Boston Celtics and averaged 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds. He also shot 38 percent from three-point range over his 74 games for the NBA champion Celtics. It marked his second league championship in three years.

Posey has career averages of 9.2 points and 4.9 boards over 663 games with Denver, Houston, Memphis, Miami and Boston."

4 years, 25 mill? Damn.

Good Deal.....Both Sides>>>>Even though a die-Hard Celts fan

All us Celts fans should be happy for Mr. Posey, “a.k.a” the most essential piece in our playoff run if you ask me. If you think about it, most, if not, all of the focus centered around the “Big 3”, or the “Big 2” featuring Ray Allen, (according to not so positive on the Celts as of late, Bill Simmons), with that Posey releived the pressure on the other guys by burying great shots, shutting down opponents and being as consistent as a good ol’ peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

If you compare it to other deals in the NBA, allah Raef LaFrentz, Mark Blount, Mike Finley, etc., it puts the $6 million deal into perspective when you start to realize those guys have an average of about $15 million per.

Consistent, dedicated, and inspirational players are few in far between in the NBA, and when you can add a veteran player, coming off of a championship to the most talented young roster in the league, it’s a very valuable commodity. As is Mr. Posey.

Before we put Posey in the Hall of Fame...

Accrue,

While I agree that Posey was a key contributor to the Celtics return to the promise land and while I am happy that he got the money he deserved, the “most essential” piece of the playoff run may be a bit absurd. He had great moments and even had great games, but role players, are role players. This team lived by Paul Pierce’s heroics. While the historic comeback (in which Posey was phenominal) in Game 4 vs. the Lakers will be remembered as the turning point in the Finals, we have to remember Game 7 (Lebron vs. Pierce)....and we have to remember Game 1 vs. the Lakers. Was Pierce hurt? Who cares? The man “limped” back into the game and drilled to tres, prompting the Boston Gar…Shawmut Cent….Fleetcen…Banknorth Cen…Garden into a frenzy. Oh…and Pierce was also guarding Kobe.

The C’s will definitely miss Posey next year as they look to repeat, but he can be replaced. Pierce…that’s a different story.

Agreed

I don’t think the C’s should have signed him for that long or that much. If they had Tony Allen and Eddie House would probably not be back in the fold. It had to be done. And Hollinger and others have made a great point – don’t overrate role players on championship too much. Like you said he’s good, but he’s a role player. I am intrigued however by the fact that Ainge recently called Tony Allen a better defender than Posey. Hopefully Allen is healthy and can show that.
