More Years Issues
Posey is gone to New Orleans, P.J. Brown is expected to retire, and Pollard isn't likely to return, but an NBA source said the Celtics are still strongly interested in signing two of their free agents, guards Eddie House and Tony Allen. The source, however, said House and Allen are receiving interest from other teams, and are seeking three-year deals.

“An NBA source?”
Hmmm!
The writing is on the wall. After watching Posey leave, the agents understand that Danny is not going to show any “loyalty” and that the bottom line rules here, so why not go after the best deal available?

Agreed. If the offers extended to House and Allen are minimal/short term, they would be foolish not to listen to other teams. Loyalty shouldn’t be a one way street.

house isnt gonna make some much money that i would have a problem using the non bird on him for 4 years but i guess i can understand if danny would much rather see if he can find a stopgap vet pg for the league minimum because:
1) obviously the league picks up half the tab if they can sign someone to that.
2) gives them a 1 year stopgap while they find out if pruitt can handle the backup job fulltime in 2 years and possibly have their pg problems solved for the foreseeable future.

So do we really want to sign both Tony and House? Shouldn’t we search for a Posey replacement, like Barnes, Finley or George?

ill be honest. its arguable he could get the same production out of jr giddens and bill walker that hose guys could give. beyond childress im not overly enamored with any of the wing names out there left over. i might say yes to maurice evans. i might even give miles a shot if i believed him to be healthy although again just for the vet minimum. but beyond that, im not certain danny wouldnt be better served just going with the rookies on the bench if he could find a vet pg like an arroyo or a damon stoudamire with some experience that wouldnt mind a 1 yr tender for the vet minimum. im sure dannys thinking right now theres more than 1 way to skin a cat.

Tony Allen getting a three year deal? I wouldn’t think he could get that unless it was a 1 year deal with 2 team options or something.

The length of contract and $$$ expected by these hopefuls are precisely the reason Danny is holding the line. I doubt that he has his eye on only one or two players but must have different scenarios depending upon who is left after the dust settles. He either spends the whole MLE on one player (i.e., Childress?)or he signs more than one player using part of the MLE or the vet min.
Apparently Danny is not the only GM being cautious with salary expenditures. As expected some more desperate GMs have upped the ante on certain players but the rest know that they are adding bench pieces and all of the available players have red flags
I wonder too if Danny is saving space for potential buyouts? Even the Giddens and Walker signings seem to be relegated to less-than high priority depending upon other potential prior moves. Giddens will get a three year contract at slightly more than last year’s 30th pick. Walkers contract will likely be a 2 year contract with a third year team option.

The wild card in all this is Gabe Pruitt. If we, as fans, had some real understanding of what he can and can’t do at both the 1 and 2 spots, we’d have a far better idea of what the Celtics should be offering House and Tony Allen. Hopefully, Ainge has the solid assessment of Pruitt that we lack, and that it’s a positive one. If it is, I expect House and Allen are gone and we’ll be seeing a stronger offer made to a shooting forward.
Coach Bo, what is that you don’t see in Walker that makes you say he’ll be of no help? Also what is the non-Bird rights contract that people keep mentioning. I know what Bird Rights are but non-Bird rights for 4 years? Does that mean we can cut a guy in year 2 and not be liable for the other 2 years?
there’s bird rights (player has switched teams through FA in 3 years) : team can offer max regardless of cap
there’s early bird rights (player has switched teams through FA in last 2 – 3 years) : team can offer a big raise, nut not as much as under bird
there’s non-bird rights (player switched team through FA less than 2 years) : team can offer a raise over last year’s contract (20%)
Eddie for two years at $5 mil or three years at $6 mil? I’d sign him for 2 yrs $5 mil. why? Great glue guy, shouldn’t lose both (Posey) of them. Instant offense and hustle are KEY bench qualities. If Pruitt’s got game Eddie would be good backup 2.
If coaches like Giddens then maybe no need to re-sign Tony. He will have a good year for somebody, it’s coming. but if they like Giddens so be it.
My prediction, Lakers beat Celtics in 6, maybe only 5 games. Celtics young bench plays gallantly but not well enough as they and band aid help prior to trade deadline are not enough for #18.
