No New News On Posey/Maggette
Free agent James Posey, via agent Mark Bartelstein, continued to talk to other NBA suitors in the wake of what he considers an unacceptable offer from his former team - one that falls short of the $5.8 million mid-level exception as well as his desire for a 4- to 5-year deal.
A Celtics source also continued to insist yesterday that the team has not made a formal offer to free agent Corey Maggette, and that the former Clipper is simply aware that the team has a $5.8 million mid-level exception available - the same amount the team has been unwilling to offer Posey.
But as Maggette continued to consider offers yesterday, with the Warriors reportedly getting into the act, a number of teams had something to offer that the Celtics won’t - a starting job.
Though the Spurs had the same salary slot available, San Antonio is also interested in the high-scoring, volume-oriented Maggette as a starter.

I understand Maggette is the better player and it’s enticing having him as our 6th man. But I firmly believe Posey’s ability to play the 4 in our small lineup cannot be duplicated by Maggette- therefore I rather keep Posey.

We are screwed. Posey will take the full MLE for 5 years from someone else and Maggette with sign with the Spurs because he will start. Can’t blame either guy. Posey would be a fool to take our shorter deal and Maggette will get 30-40 minutes a night in SA Whoever Danny signs will have some pretty big shoes to fill.

we’re going to lose out on both of them.

It’s not always about the money, but in this case, it probably is. The Celtics aren’t going to get either Posey or Maggette. They can’t afford them.
Ainge has a real challenge before him, and how it ultimately works out may turn on things that are nearly impossible to predict. In particular, what if anything, will Gabe Pruitt, J.R. Riddens, and Bill Walker give him this year.

Let’s wait until Ainge ups the offer to 3 years full MLE. That seems about right value for C’s. If there is a legit 5 year offer, I’m sure they will make the right determination whether to bet on Posey four years. My guess is no way the C’s offer 5 years.
Maggette may only come off bench next year. After that who knows about Ray. He might be ready for 18-20 mins game off bench.

Right now I agree, we are losing out on both. I think Tony Allen has a good chance to come back to the team on short money.

You’re probably right about Tony Allen being brought back.

We’re not losing out on both of them…no way.
The C’s are now a desired destination.
Danny & Co. will come thru with something…I have faith.
I’d actually prefer Corey…not that I know what the heck I’m talking about.
But judging by his #‘s, the offense is there for Corey…he’s a fantastic athlete.

No question mcpu40. Posey fits this team well, but for the same money Magette is a lot more talented player. Just don’t think he will want backup minutes with the Spurs offering a starting position. I think that Magette will announce his decision and if it isn’t us we will quickly give Posey what he wants. I just think we will overpay unfortunately.

So I take it Posey is Guy Richie, Maggette is A-Rod, and Danny is Madonna in this whole affair?

I can’t believe we’re missing out on both. Sure when you’re some mediocre to scrub team FA don’t give you a second thought. But when you’re the champs offering a chance to play with the Big Three, you’re bringing something to the table as well. We need not beg for players services anymore. They have to impress us as well. I have to believe that were Posey really to have a pile of full MLE offers on his plate, he would be gone by now. Danny is calling his bluff and will wait him out..

first, lets all agree that magette will not sign a long term contract for just the full MLE (5.8 mill). why would he when by next year he may be able to command 8 mill per year?
so if magette is just going to sign a 1 year contract for the full MLE, why would he go to the spurs if the lakers, clippers, mavs, suns, jazz, hornets are all there to knock out the spurs in the 1st round.
with the celtics, he is assured of going atleast to the ECF.
if the celtics go and win the finals, dont you think magette will get his 8-10 million per year the next season? if posey suddenly is hot commodity (entitled to 6 million) for being 6th man of the 2008 celtic champion team, what more can magette be entitled to?
conclusion, i dont think the celtics are losing out on the spurs for magette.

cant we just sign posey to an escalting deal for the full MLE for 5 years? (i dont know what you call that contract where posey gets minimum of the full MLE, and his salary just gets higher and higher as the year goes) and after the 3rd year, maybe we can ship his ass out and start rebuilding?

let’s not get caught up in the corey-posey box. there are plenty players outside that box. after ray and kg, i thought we’d be in the playoffs, but danny came up with some late signings, ie, posey, eddie,pj,et.al. and bingo-nba champs.

weird how ESPN NEWS now has—-“Report:free agent F Corey Maggette considering offer from Celtics”….scrolling along the bottom of the “Breaking News” screen….I thought this rumor was kinda old.

I think Danny made a good move. Maggette addresses a need for the C’s…someone who can create his own shot for scoring off the bench. As good as Posey is with all the intangibles, the second unit’s offense was awfully stagnant. A second unit of Cassell/Pruitt, Maggette, Giddens/Walker/T. Allen, Powe and Big Baby/new center would most likely be more expolsive than Cassell/House, T. Allen, Posey, Powe/Big Baby, and PJ Brown.
If Maggette signs with the Spurs, so be it, but I would rather see Danny give him the MLE, than give in to Posey’s demand for a 5 year deal. He is not THAT good to be making that kind of money/ taking up that amount of cap space, for that long.
By the way, from what I’m reading, House might be a Knick next year.

The scary thing about not getting Posey is the Lakers getting him. Imagine Posey with the Lakers? They’ll have a lineup of Fisher, Bryant, Posey/Odom, Bynum and Gasol. http://thelakersnation.com/blog/2008/07/03/posey-wants-lakers-lakers-willing-to-go-full-mle-to-land-him/ I really hope we do get Posey.

Good point, porkplan. But, if they do it for 5 years, they’ll be spending unreasonable money long term for 3 players at that position (Walton and Radmanovic are already overpaid, and signed for a few more years). Is it possible the lakers are just trying to drive up Posey’s price to weaken the C’s? I think their real need is at the point. Who knows, trading Crittendon may have been a bigger mistake than people realized at first. If Farmar is not the real deal, they may paint themselves in a corner.
I would rather see Ainge sign Maggette to a reasonable deal, and put out that lineup against LAL, than cave in to a contract that is bad in the long term just because Posey might end up playing for the Lakers.

Are the Celtics able to pay Posey without using the MLE? In other words, is there a rule that says that’s the only way they can sign him?
by TrueGreen on Jul 5, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I love Posey but he isn’t a starter. He’s an excellent bench player and we can’t over pay for that. Maggette is a starter and even if he doesn’t start for us next year he will the year after that. He would be a huge pickup for us.

couldnt posey had just renegotiated his contract with the celtics? or was the not possible?
by laswoosh on Jul 6, 2008 12:35 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Posey was in the middle of a 2 year deal. He opted out, so that Is his renegotiating. That said, a 5 year, 30 million deal for Posey, which takes you to his 35th birthday is a BIG mistake. I love Posey but you have to keep his contract lined up with Pierce’s.
This is how proper salary cap management works. When Pierce’s deal is up, the ONLY major salary they should have on their books is Kevin Garnett. This will allow them to rebuild on the fly quickly. That is how the Spurs (for one) do it — all of their non-core contracts are tied to Tim Duncan’s career decisions.
