Marbury To Be Released

marbury_ainge.jpgFrom ESPN:

Stephon Marbury may be in shape physically to join the Knicks on the court, but the Knicks might finally be ready mentally to part ways with their chaotic point guard.

The Knicks are preparing to put Marbury on waivers by the end of the week, several sources with knowledge of the situation told Newsday. The team must await the go-ahead from Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan, however, because it would involve eating another large chunk of money in a buyout, Newsday reported.

Will Danny have any interest?

(yes, this is a blatant attempt to generate discussion out of nothing)

(no, that picture isn't recent)

Would be a good scoring option off the bench, depends on where his minds is.

They’d be instant favorites to win it all again…

But aren’t they that already?

They’d also instantly change their image.

Therefore, I cannot see them having any interest at all.

Low risk, high reward. He comes in and is a problem – he can be cut.

If he’s healthy physically…
If he’s healthy mentally…
If he accepted the role…

He would be the 6th man of the year, no doubt.

A lot of ifs…

We could really be the team of 2nd Chances “Marbury” “Tony” “Darius” would be cool though we could go small off the bench with Steph Eddie Tony Darius and Powe or baby

It would be better than signing Cassell. I think KG can keep his head on right. It would be worth a shot.

How do you measure mental health?? He’s NEVER learned in his career to play pg and has always been alittle off, no reason to think he will now. He didn’t learn it last year either.

He’s always been a solid scorer, which would be a huge boost off the bench.

What a tool Starbury is.. no way no how.

I can’t believe anyone would seriously consider this locker room poison onto the team. We are not a desparate team seeking any answer to our problems.

We’re the Boston Celtics. Losers need not apply.

by Schupac on Sep 23, 2008 12:51 PM EDT reply actions

Deadbeat player who was mixed up in Isiah’s corrupt behavior. No 2nd chance for multiple losers like him. Danny is not that crazy. Stevie Francis need not apply either. The NBA has passed those guys by and they’ve got plenty of pocket change to pay for their diminished sense of self.

by Wildblu1 on Sep 23, 2008 12:52 PM EDT reply actions

Marbury could give us 2-3 good years, which is the useful life of the big 3. If KG pushes, my guess is Danny will sign him. There will be no pressure on Starbury. He is a weird dude, but has got talent. Certainly makes more sense than Cassell at this point.

by footey on Sep 23, 2008 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

You guys would regret it if you signed him. Maybe not “horribly regret” it, but I think you would regret it nonetheless.

On the flipside, the unintentional comedy could potentially be off the charts!

by College Wolf on Sep 23, 2008 2:18 PM EDT reply actions

Marbury > Cassell.
Me > Marbury.

by BonK on Sep 23, 2008 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

Regret? not sure, since the Celtics would not be responsible for his salary and also he would be here for 1 year, unless some other team ridiculously gives him a contract.

So much depends on where his head is and if he’s maturing or regressing in his professionl life. I remember him first coming into the league thinking wow this kid has talent and he talked so fondly of Cousy

Maybe the Celtic lure/prestige might rub off him the same way it has many others when putting on a uniform. Granted I’m reaching here knowing how today’s players just don’t give a crap and sometimes all you need is a swift kick in the butt.

My feeling is that Doc would be able to handle Marbury because he has the backing of his players. Our atmosphere is so different here than in New York, maybe he just needs to get the bleep out of New York.

He has a load of talent, but if he can’t be controlled than I don’t want him on this team

First team all-second chance:

G Marbury
G Tony Allen
F Darius Miles
F Bill Walker
C Patrick O’Bryant

(Honorable Mention: JR Giddens)

He is talented…no doubt about it. If he wants a ring, a professional environment, and a rabid fandom…then come to Boston. If he wants money, women, and trouble…no thanks.

by Mon on Sep 23, 2008 2:49 PM EDT reply actions

I’m pretty sure that he wants the latter of what Mon was referring to.

by College Wolf on Sep 23, 2008 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

To a small extent, Sam Cassell wore me out everytime he played with the Celtics last year. With every shot attempt he took, far more so than with any other Celtic, I found myself questioning whether it was or wasn’t one he should’ve taken. It was tiresome.

Now if Marbury were to join the Celtics, he’d probably exhaust me in a week, not to mention Doc.

Thumbs down.

by no kidding on Sep 23, 2008 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Besides, I thought Marbury was all dead set on heading to Italy and playing the ‘beautiful’ basketball.

by no kidding on Sep 23, 2008 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

we need a big man. marbury does not have the 2nd or 3rd string ego. eddie can do what marbury does, maybe not as well, but is much lower maintenance. he also is proven player on this team.

by nazzbo on Sep 23, 2008 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

One thing I always liked about Marbury is he gets a lot of points attacking the basket, that’s a bonus for any team.

by Celtic on Sep 23, 2008 3:36 PM EDT reply actions

Please no. I don’t like rooting for guys like him… :P

by silvershamrocker on Sep 23, 2008 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

We wouldn’t want no kidding to have to go through that kind of torment, so Danny please consider this before signing him, very important factor in the decision making process. Just like Sam, Starbury would be expected to provide some punch off the bench. People tend to remember things according to their own pre-conceptions, like Posey only in the playoffs, not the offensive ineptitude of the second unit for long stretches last year during the regular season. Nobody could create their own shot, they were all spotting up, but with nobody to penetrate and kick unless the Big 3 were on the floor. Sam did NOT play primarily with the Big 3, ignoring them and selfishly chasing his own shot, Doc encouraged him to shoot when he was out there with the subs, the options to score were few and far between with that unit.

If Marbury was able to accept a lesser role, which would be spelled out clearly before signing him, he could do what he does in few minute spurts. By and large, most people are analyzing him from what he has been, a starting PG who plays 40 minutes and has been one of the best scorers on the teams he has played for recently. Projecting how that Marbury would fit with the C’s misses the mark, he would not be asked to shoulder that load, so again IF, and he won’t be signed otherwise, he was willing to be a hired gun to help the bench with some much needed penetration and scoring over the long season so the Big 3’s minutes can stay reasonable, he could help the team for sure.

Marbury > Pruitt. Just one reason to sign him.

by P_two on Sep 23, 2008 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

What about Europe?

Do you think he’d take an early trip out to Italy or somewhere?

I don’t see great offers for him in the NBA. How many teams would give him a starting role? How many minutes are on offer? How much money? Doesn’t look like much of an offer.

Europe could be very enticing

by Who on Sep 23, 2008 5:23 PM EDT reply actions

Didnt Marbury say a year or two ago that he wanted to pull a David Beckham?

by StartOrien on Sep 23, 2008 5:34 PM EDT reply actions

I would say no to Marbury. He’s a good player but not the type of team player we need. he would also be a bad influence on the young guys.

by Frontierboy on Sep 23, 2008 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

KJ33, thanks for your consideration of my difficulties. Nobody knows de trouble I’ve seen.

By the way, if Marbury’s so great, why is New York pushing him out the door? Especially after he led them to all those victories?

by no kidding on Sep 23, 2008 7:49 PM EDT reply actions

I think that would be his best decision, who; but the rosters of top European teams are already full-filled. Not much money left, except on Russian teams – and I don’t see Marbury living in Khimky.

sign marbury and sign cassell to a coach’s contract in case marbury doesn’t work out

i like rooting for Danny’s reaches to do well like Powe

I am going to have a lot of “danny’s reaches” to root for this year. If a few of them pan out, we will be awesome.

The thing is, Marbury stopped attacking the basket, and settled for long jumpers his last few years in New York. He got too comfortable making the easy money, and his teammates came a distant second.

by Tradetime on Sep 23, 2008 11:22 PM EDT reply actions

Marbury only “appears” to be a good player when he has free reign to dominate the ball. Make him play team basketball and of course his numbers drop. He’s just not an above average point guard. I bet house’s /- stats would be a lot better than marbury’s.
