Doc Gets New Deal Through 2010-2011

doc.jpg

Adrian Wojnarowski reports:

After winning the NBA championship, Doc Rivers and the Boston Celtics have reached agreement on a contract extension through the 2010-2011 season, a league source familiar with the deal told Yahoo! Sports.

The contract has not been signed, but Celtics officials and Rivers’ agent, Lonnie Cooper, are in the process of finishing up the paperwork, the source said.

You've got to love this closing paragraph:

Celtics GM Danny Ainge absorbed significant criticism for keeping Rivers after a 24-58 season in ’06-07, but was determined to give Rivers a significant upgrade of talent before ultimately judging him. Rivers was runner-up to the New Orleans Hornets’ Byron Scott for Coach of the Year.

Way to go Doc!

This is no surprise and certainly the right thing to do. I also questioned whether or not Doc would want an extension because of his family situation. He doesn’t need the money. He loves to coach and he loves this Team and Organization. I wonder, though,if he completes this contract because of his family.

That’s the second move this off-season – after the resign of Ed House – that I like.

Congratulations to Doc Rivers – he has achievements speak volumes, and the naysayers are rather quiet, at least until the next time they perceive a “coaching fault.”

Well-deserved respect for a well-deserving coach. Congrats
