Ainge Shopping For Shooter

Adrian Wojnarowski reports

What GM Danny Ainge wants is a shooter off the bench, but he’s struggling to find one. League sources say he made a bid for the Orlando Magic’s J.J. Redick recently, a guard he’s long coveted, but an offer of J.R. Giddens and Gabe Pruitt couldn’t come close to prying Redick. What’s more, Orlando isn’t motivated to fortify the Celtics. Suddenly, the Magic believe they can beat Boston. League executives say Ainge has become more persistent this week in searching out deals, but as a Western Conference executive said, "He just doesn’t have any players that anyone wants."

What about Tony Allen?

Would you trade Tony Allen for J.J. Redick?

Nope

Sorry, I dont want Redick, and I dont see how he helps us one bit…

Pruitt and Giddens for Redick? Ha, ha, is this a joke. I wouldn`t trade either of these for JJ. What does he bring that House doesn`t! Pruitt is 10 times better!

Orlando isn’t motivated to fortify the Celtics. Suddenly, the Magic believe they can beat Boston

Yeah. Id day the Magic would beat us in a series right now easily….but they dont even play JJ redick, and they would be getting the better end of the deal!!!!!!!! wow

Also, this proves again people have little to no respect for us…even the magic are sitting back licking there chops thinking they can beat us…do I smell a first round exit? seriously

Tell Eddie House that Ainge needs a shooter.

Great. As if watching the Celts fall to Cleveland was bad enough, I have to hear Ainge supposedly believe JJ Redick is worth more than Giddens and Pruitt.

This article makes no sense. If the Celts need a shooter, even if he can’t do anything else, then they already have one. The guy’s name is Eddie House. He was the guy last seen ignoring his teammates and chucking up 3’s in yesterday’s fourth quarter.

That pretty much sums things up.

Very True

But am I the only one who would be scratching his head if the celtics made this deal? first of all, Orlando is dumb not to do it! they think giving us redick, a guy they despise and keep at the end of the bench will fortify our team? LOL….I strongly believe they’d be getting the better end of the deal

by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 10, 2009 10:01 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That’s pretty much it in a nutshell, Roy.

But Redick? He can’t guard a chair. If this is the best Danny can come up with, it’s a lot easier to understand the mess he made this summer. He’s not as smart as people on here want tothink.

Do you really compare Oden to Rondo?

Seriously, i’m not trying to be rude or anything. I’m just curious as to what it would take to get Rondo from the Celtics. This post is about getting a shooter and Outlaw is hitting 3’s at like 40 per cent. You guys need a shooter; we need a defensive minded pg.

Outside of Roy and Oden, what would it take for the Blazers to get Rondo? Or is there just zero chances of Rondo leaving?

Rondo's done more in his career than Oden

I don’t think a shooter is needed. House and Pruitt are fine. I like Pruitt the more I see him. Heady kid, good D, he makes a good guy off the bench. I think a backup C is the priority and maybe a backup SF. Other than the start 5, I don’t think the C’s have good trading chips. I hope someone will get bought out.

by pick_and_pop on Jan 10, 2009 10:24 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Simple Solution

The simple solution is to start Tony Allen and Bring Ray Allen off the bench. But of course that’s too complex for Rivers, who will stick with his rotations until the ship has disappeared from view.

Coach,

what would you do to improve the existing team without adding any players?

by wahz on Jan 10, 2009 11:57 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Starting tony allen woul hard hurt us unless he started for rondo, sorry but we would be hard strapped to win a game ever again with TA and rondo as our backcourt…that would literally be the most atrocious backcoure of all time

by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 10, 2009 11:42 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

TA, Rondo & Perk at same time?

I think the suggestion above is horrible and I wonder what credibility the poster has to criticize Doc.

Rondo, TA, and Perk starting together? 3 guys with no jumpshot? KG could never play anywhere near the paint with that lineup, and the lane would be clogged with the players defending Rondo, TA, and Perk playing off their guys.

by guava_wrench on Jan 10, 2009 12:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you forget

the part about this team being defensively oriented and if they get stops they can get easy transition buckets.

well, they’re not getting any stops lately with ray in their because everybody is running by him. at least TA can play some defense.

by reggie35 on Jan 10, 2009 5:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

More dumb GM's, just like Ainge

Apparently, the rest of the league just doesn’t understand how great Pruitt and Giddens are. All we hear is how much those 2 should play (along with Walker) on this blog. Predictably, most still want to hold onto them. This should be a wake-up call that NOBODY else is interested in the guys people are pining for to crack the rotation.

by KJ33 on Jan 10, 2009 10:55 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't trade Pruitt for Redick straight up

Redick can shoot, theoretically, but he’s a defensive liability who has shown no ability to run a team. Pruitt can also shoot, he looks very capable defensively, and he seems to be developing some nice PG skills (had a nice assist to Powe last night, a nice slash to the basket, etc.). It is true, though, that all of this doesn’t matter if Rivers refuses to play Pruitt — as in the second half of last night’s game…

(posted on previous thread) I'm surprised to see peole here bashing Danny

for "not improving" the team. Do you realize the Celtics cap situation? Did you not see this coming when HE traded for a Championship and got two more $20 million players. He doesn’t have room to just sign players at will. The Celtics are already $8.85 million over the cap. Posey would have cost you 5.6 million per year for 4 years. Double that with luxury tax and you’re paying 11 million for 4 years. Posey had to go. If he signed him. You’d be wy over the cap and blaming Danny 2-3 years from now, then Posey is not worth the money and you’re stuck with him and his 16 minutes a game.

Danny is not to blame. Danny brought you a Chip. And don’t think that after years of mediocrity that the Celtics have been this great cash cow, that can just afford to spend foolishly like the Knicks.

by wondahbap on Jan 10, 2009 11:10 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

That doesn't even make sense

Danny indeed offered Posey a 3 year MLE contract, so your reasoning is nonsensical. In the 4th year of Posey’s contract, we could be under the luxury tax threshold (or, more probably, trade Posey before that).

And nobody is bashing Danny, just questioning some decisions he made during the Summer. I’d rather have signed Posey and backup pg with the min. salary (or just have Pruitt+Cassell backing up Rondo). The payroll would be the same we have now.

by cordobes on Jan 10, 2009 12:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it was the length of Posey’s proposed contract that was the problem, as Danny most likely wants to be in the running for a big name free agent in 2010.

i checked Jason Kapono’s contract and he has a player option for the 2010-11 season, which could possibly rule him out of coming to the C’s via a trade (plus he’s getting paid over $5-6 million per season- way too much).

by Ruben Wolkowyski on Jan 10, 2009 12:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This conversation is just too old by now

The chances of the C’s signing a big name free agent in 2010 are basically non-existents. Besides that, and for the final time, Ainge offered Posey a 3 year contract, that would run until AFTER 2010.

Kapono has an horrible contract. Who talked about Kapono?

by cordobes on Jan 10, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Pierce’s contract might come off the books in 2010, but I am unsure if we’ll have money to spend on a free agent. is there an article or a website that outlines how much money we might have in 2010?

this website was posted a short time ago on CelticsBlog and i checked on the Early Termination Option on Pierce’s contract- if he opts out then he can still sign a new contract with the Celtics. apparently Kobe Bryant may do the same thing with the Lakers this year. i am unsure, is that what has already been discussed?

by Ruben Wolkowyski on Jan 10, 2009 1:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Pierce might opt-out. I really don’t see that happening though. Remember we’d need to renounce to the rights of our free-agents (Pierce, Ray, etc) to clear their cap holds and create salary space.

Anyway, talking about this as a factor for not signing Posey is misleading . Ainge offered him a 3 year contract. That goes beyond 2010. So the 2010 FA market clearly didn’t play a role on his decision.

by cordobes on Jan 10, 2009 1:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

2010 could be a factor.

Ray Allen is gone after next year.

by wondahbap on Jan 10, 2009 3:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

How do you know that?

But even with Ray Allen gone, it’s not enough.

But, for the last time: Ainge offered Posey a contract that would go further than 2010.

Hence, 2010 wasn’t a factor.

I think this is clear enough, no?

by cordobes on Jan 10, 2009 4:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I read it the first time.

My “2010 could be a factor.” comment was in response to your “So the 2010 FA market clearly didn’t play a role on his decision.”

Of course I don’t KNOW that Ray Allen would be gone, but I think the impending contract situation with the rest of the team, make him a good candidate to be gone after next year, or traded during next season. He’s making $18 mill. I can’t see the Celtics re-upping him when they have to worry about the future (Re-signing Rondo, Perk, KG, extending PP). the money they save on letting Ray go, buys 2 good young players at least.

by wondahbap on Jan 10, 2009 5:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

So the 2010 FA market clearly didn’t play a role on his decision – it clearly didn’t, whatever you believe there’ll be space available in 2010 or not.

If Ainge was worried about 2010, he wouldn’t have offered him a 3 years contract.

——

The fact that Allen is making $18 million doesn’t make that amount of money available to sign new players even if they let him walk for nothing. I think that 6 players only – KG, PP, RR, KP, Walker+Giddens – will probably be costing around $54 million. With the remaining cap holds, that won’t leave lots of space to sign a FA -especially considering how many teams will have plenty of room to operate that off-season.

by cordobes on Jan 10, 2009 6:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No. I read one of your comments incorrectly.

My comments about 2010 had nothing to do with my Posey comment.

Just that Boston will have money some money to spend in 2010, and could factor in some of Danny’s decision making. Scal and Ray Allen represent 21.5 mill coming off the books.

by wondahbap on Jan 10, 2009 7:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It's a lot coming off the books

But even more staying there. And that’s what matters.

by cordobes on Jan 10, 2009 7:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

So, does this mean that those who said

that this team was lacking perimeter shooting were right?

by cordobes on Jan 10, 2009 12:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

instead of panicking and making a trade they’ll regret, why can’t doc rivers start playing around with different rotations. keep ray allen fresh so he can hit the killer 3’s at the end of the game. when the bench came in last night, i saw a lot of energy and good ball movement. the bench cant be THAT bad. give them a chance!

Tony Allen is a better option than JJ Redick on the wing for Boston.

I think it´s time to include the 2011 First Round Pick into our trade ideas.

That´s the only valuable piece left.

by Casperian on Jan 10, 2009 1:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think that first round picks are the keys to most of the guys the C’s are linked to, especially Joe Smith. I think that’s what those teams will be trying to acquire more so than anything else.

by Who on Jan 10, 2009 3:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No to Reddick

I really liked the idea of Reddick when he was coming out. We needed everything then but a shooter who is money on free throws wass very appealing. But didn’t happen and he has proved himself to not be NBA caliber. Magic could use a shooter and they don’t use him. Nothing to this just as there was really nothing to Danny’s “infatuation” with Swift.

Instead of getting a shooter, how about telling current bad shooters like Big Baby to stop shooting. I like Baby but his shooting is pathetic. Pound the ball into Leon.

HELL no to Reddick. C’mon Ainge, go make a play for Camby.
