Belated Game Thoughts

I didn't get to see the game till later (DVR) and only caught the 2nd half (long story that you don't care about, but it includes taking down Christmas decorations - aren't you glad I spared you that story?) but here are some thoughts from the game.

  • The Celtics led by as many as 20 but let the Raps back in it.  Allowing a late 17-5 run didn't help.
  • If Ray Allen doesn't hit 8 three pointers, we might have lost this game.
  • If we don't play better, we might see another losing streak begin.
  • Perkins was out (sore shoulder), so that doesn't help.  However, Scalabrine played well in an increased role.
  • Big Baby didn't.  He was 1-12 from the floor in 30 minutes of play.  At least he grabbed 11 rebounds.
  • Rondo had a nasty dunk
  • Scal don't back down from nobody
  • Lots more game notes by HoopsAddict including this one:  "Glen “Big Baby” Davis is so huge that when he fell in the third quarter I heard the thud all the way up in the gondola here at the Air Canada Centre."

I was hoping for a nice layup game.  This one wasn't pretty, but it got us going in the right direction.  Lets hope the trend continues tomorrow in Boston.

Love the Baby, Hate the Shot

He’s going to be a good NBA player but his shot is flat and terrible now. Not just today. All year.

Not a very satisfying win. They lost the 4th Qtr by a lot and it was only Ray in the zone or else we lose.

Can’t really see it. No player looks bad (except BBD’s shoooting) but the system is not getting it done.

Scal played well.

No need for negative ... we won!

Nice to get a road win, that’s all that matters.

For all the fans who are convinced Patrick O'Bryant can't play in this league...

… I’d like to know why they believe Glen Davis isn’t an offensive liability as a backup center.

Davis seems to be a nice, personable kind of guy. He might even be a decent 12th man as a strong forward. He does a good job of boxing out, and rotates well on defense (though he can’t challenge anyone’s shot). But offensively, he stinks in the paint, and has no way to reliably get his shot off. And don’t mention his jump shot. It’s a joke.

I’m tired of reading snide remarks of O’Bryant. The last one I read had him being compared unfavorably to Greg Oden. Yeah, that’s fine. But how about comparing him with Davis?

I'm the biggest POB around

but even I would be willing to give him a shot

on the other hand, I’m also willing to trust Doc’s judgment (to a point)

To an extent, I also trust Doc. But I’ve seen a year and a half of Glen Davis, and know he can’t cut it. I’m anxious to see, with my own two eyes, whether O’Bryant can’t do better.

You can’t be serious. Davis plays with effort, which you’re never going to get out of Paddy.

This infatuation with a stiff is bordering on Gerald Green-like status. The guy can’t play, people. He couldn’t play in college. He couldn’t play at Golden State. And Doc’s speaking volumes.

Admittedly we need a backup 5. It isn’t Paddy.

You fail to address the issue.

You want to tear down Patrick O’Bryant, yet you’re the only one on this blog who’s claimed to have seen enough of O’Bryant to have formed a strong opinion. Your argument is, the rest of us don’t need to see O’Bryant, since you and Doc have already dismissed him. Well, I’m not that sold on Doc’s early assessments. And meanwhile, you’re unpersuasive as to why Glen Davis should by playing backup center. And this, while everyone can see that he can’t.

And don’t give me the garbage about how “Davis plays with effort”. My dog plays with effort – but he can’t play center either.

The Bench.....

Only caught a bit of the game but saw the box — big minutes for the Big 3 and very little again from the bench, save for Scal. Yes, they got a badly needed win but the bench is still a major problem.

As for POB, they need someone who can come in and give them 10 minutes a night this season and if he can’t do it, he’s a luxury (i.e. another project) that they really can’t afford right now.

by Kuberski33 on Jan 11, 2009 10:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

This is what drives me nuts.

We have people who are ready to dismiss O’Bryant as a luxury project that the team can’t afford to waste ten minutes on. But then they take no notice that the Celtics are blowing leads trying to get by with Glen Davis in the paint. They disparage what they’ve hardly seen (O’Bryant), but are unconcerned with the guy who’s playing like garbage in front of their eyes. (If they actually watch the game,)

by no kidding on Jan 11, 2009 11:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Why?

If the guy were good enough to get minutes, he’d be getting them because you’re right, BBD is playing like crap and is a big reason why this team is struggling right now. The point is, POB is obviously not good enough at this point to be getting minutes because he ain’t getting them.

You can blame, Doc but how many guys who Doc/Danny have deemed not ready/able to play have actually gone to other teams and done anything?

Their track record is pretty decent when it comes to evaluating talent.

by Kuberski33 on Jan 11, 2009 11:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It never ceases to amaze me how fans believe their knowledge trumps what Doc sees in practice.

Baby isn’t a perfect center. But I’ll take effort all day long.

by CoachBo on Jan 12, 2009 7:44 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

But … if Doc wants to roll Danny’s mistake out there, I can always use the clips to show my players what a lack of effort really is.

Silver lining in every dark cloud.

Doc's track record?

Doc’s track record is that he’s slow to come around to playing young new guys. For instance, do you remember how long it took for him to start to take the brakes off of Rondo and Powe?

So no, I’m not buying the argument that O"Bryant “obviously” isn’t good enough, simply because he’s not playing.

And I’ll say this, from the limited “garbage” minutes I’ve seen of O"Bryant, he looks far more useful in the paint then Davis, who you concede is playing like crap. (And I’ll add, Davis has consistently shown he hasn’t the abililty to get his shot off in this league.)

by no kidding on Jan 12, 2009 12:09 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

If you can't wrap your mind around Davis vs. O'Bryant, try considering House vs. Pruitt.

Speaking of Doc’s track record…. we’ve known since half way through last year that Eddie House (after Lindsay Hunter completely undressed him) wasn’t adequate to play back up point guard. So here we are, nearly half way through this season, and Doc is still trying to talk himself into giving Gabe Pruitt serious minutes.

Frankly, I don’t need to wait another season to be convinced that Glen Davis can’t cut it. I’m ready to see what O’Bryant can do.

Speaking of Powe

I wonder why he only played 8 minutes and BBD 30?

by bigal_nl on Jan 12, 2009 1:09 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

To my way of thinking, Powe doesn’t come into the question. He’s the undisputed backup at the 4 spot. Period.

by no kidding on Jan 12, 2009 10:34 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I would suggest to you that POB is more likely to be waived than he is to contribute anything meaningful to this team this year.

by Kuberski33 on Jan 12, 2009 9:42 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

That's a fine strong prediction. But what are you basing it on?

Again, I’d like people to address the point. We can see with our eyes as fans that Glen Davis can’t get the job done. He simply lacks the height and leaping ability. Meanwhile, we haven’t seen enough of O’Bryant to get a firm opinion. But, what we have seen shows he has a nice mid-range shot, better moves, and is a better leaper, and finisher around the rim than Glen Davis.

It may turn out that O’Bryant is hopeless and can’t play. I just want to be able to see for myself. That’s why I’m a fan. But still, I’m thinking he might be alright as a backup center. I already know that Davis isn’t.
