Rumor: Starbury To Boston
Hold on to your hats folks. This could be an interesting development.
Marc Stein is reporting the following:
Nearly one year since Stephon Marbury last played in a regular-season game, signals are getting stronger that the New York Knicks' outcast will eventually make his comeback with the Boston Celtics.
That still depends largely on Marbury's ability to negotiate his release from the Knicks after weeks of fruitless and oft-contentious buyout talks, but sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com this week that Boston is Marbury's preferred destination if he manages to become a free agent and that the Celtics are indeed hopeful of signing him.
...
Although it has been widely assumed that Celtics forward Kevin Garnett would resist a reunion with the controversial point guard -- after Marbury broke up their Minnesota partnership in less than three seasons together by forcing a trade to New Jersey -- one Celtics source insists that Garnett has voiced no opposition to the idea of signing Marbury for the rest of the season to strengthen Boston's backcourt depth behind starters Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen.
When asked specifically about the likelihood of Marbury joining the Celtics this season, the source predicted that "it will happen."
...
One source close to Marbury cautioned that it would be premature to say that he's narrowed his wish list down to the Celtics, but one Western Conference executive said of the notion that Marbury is Boston-bound: "I've heard the exact same thing."
My thoughts will be posted on this soon.

don't like it
we need a big man, not a basket case. this could be one of those corey dillon/randy moss type situations where a guy has a bad reputation but…. why take that risk to fill that spot? it’s not the priority. unless it helps us get joe smith somehow i don’t see it.

Celtics are running out of options.
I say go for it. Keep him from the Lakers. Then trade for Smith and keep him from the Cavs.

I agree with that.
I loathe Starbury, frankly. But if Garnett can run herd on the guy – demand that he play hard and within the system – then I’m willing to take a look at it.
This is precisely the kind of deal Red would have made.

and always felt he was.
That’s why he forced the trade. Talent wise, he was an is, but he’s a loser. I’m not sure he could stay in check. I don’t think he ever respected KG, and it would resurface.

Bad idea
Poe and Baby are too small, we need someone big down there.

This does not mean
that we will not be able to get a big man. We are not using any players to get Marbury, so a deal for a big man can still be made.

Bankshot is dead on as usual
2 guys that makes us favorites by far are Marbury & Smith…there is ZERO risk,he allows Rondo AND House less point minutes….and the guy is a good player….it does not stop us from getting a big guy….downside??…none…..heaven forbid if RR got hurt? you want Sam logging 30+ a nite or Marbury???

Agree
If cost isn’t an issue, this is a no-brainer. Marbury is likely to behave, certainly his best ever chance for a ring, as well as to redeem his reputation. If he is the loser most have said he is, then he sits…

I do NOT
want Marbury logging 30+ minutes a night. Thats where he will become a cancer. But if he is only playing 10-12 minutes off the bench in a limited I just dont think he becomes a problem. However, if the C’s ask him to play starter minutes then all bets are off.

Joe Smith
is the real missing piece anyway, IMO.

90 pts and we're in
I think???? we’ve not scored 90+ and lost…Marbury will help us score 90, which = wins…which we all like…Starbury is a lousy SOB maybe but his best chance for a new contract is via the Posey route, ride the coattails of the big 3 to a title and cash in…this is perfect for both him & the C’s

Confusing but why not?
I don’t think this is the best idea ever but maybe it’s worth a shot. Maybe a reunion with Garnett will light a fire under his @$# and get Marbury to realize that this might be the last chance he has to prove he’s still a good basketball player before he ends up overseas or something. I think he still has potential but hasn’t been motivated or in a good situation in years. It’s a cliche but sometimes a change of scenery and a new group of players motivating him is what a player needs once in awhile.
I’d rather have some height such as PJ Brown or a similar player but I don’t know if they are planning to make another move before the trading deadline and picking up Marbury makes them deeper so maybe it’s all part of a bigger plan. I’d like to see Pruitt get some more legit minutes this season but it seems like that isn’t going to happen…

Don't Want Marbury
But Danny is a gambler. If he does bring Marbury in he will have done his due diligence. He brought in Ricky Davis and he helped us for a year. I think on this one he will get opinions from Doc and the veteran players. We see Marbury as a terrible person and maybe he is. But the players know him better than we do. Forgetting about the big for now we need someone to allow House and TA to play the 2 and 3 and not pg. My choice would be Gabe. If Marbury can be induced to be a playmaker first it could be a good move. And maybe the inducement of a ring can be that motivating factor. Will be interesting to see what happens.

i honestly don’t know how to feel about this. i worry about chemistry….but i do know that with strong team players like peirce, allen and garnett we won’t let one guy ruin it for us. let’s put it this way…if marbury screws this one up it’s just gonna make him look bad…and not necessarily the celtics. i don’t think he will stand in the way in us defending our championship.

don’y like the guy. holds on to the ball too much. is the epicenter of the offense. what, we were happy with sam keeping the ball to himself last year? and he has been sitting for months which equals terrible game shape, which means we have to tolerate tons of minutes of him doing his ego thing to get in shape.

You do not want a cancer that is more talented than most of your team gradually
playing a crucial role. He didn’t play in NY for a reason. He’s too good to give bench minutes to, and too much of a cancer to accept them.

It really depends on what Ainge thinks of Pruitt.
Ainge has invested in Pruitt. If he thinks Pruitt can’t cut it, then yeah, he considers Marbury. But my guess is, Ainge isn’t thinking about Marbury at all, and this talk is only being generated by Marbury’s agent.

What do we expect?
Marbury is typical of what is available out there at our price. We either roll the dice with the guy and hope he accepts his role or dont. I dont see a lot of difference here from the initial Posey signing. The guy has a bad rep from his former team/coach and we dont know how he will fit in. His teammates dont say a lot one way or the other except that he needs to focus on the game rather than his own needs. A lot of us (myself included) will tend to say I told you so, if this doesnt work.
If he comes, I wonder what role he is expected to fill? He takes minutes from Pruitt, House, Rondo and probably Tony Allen. Will he play any defense? Will the Doc and starters prefer him to Rondo in the fourth quarter like they did Cassell briefly last year?

I don't think its a slam on Gabe's future
sorry to beat the dead horse but Danny has to make up for the Pose deal or act within its theory which is to figure out how to win now and still have cap space in 2010.So if you sign Marbury and trade for Smith, they are one year rentals maybe two if they work out. Then they are gone as will be House at least and maybe Ray. Perk, RR PP and KG are the core beyond that and whichever youngs make it. I think are manuevering to get someone like Wade then. The point is we are picking up rentals, that is the plan, that is what Pose was.

49 Games Left - Thoughts on Marbury
1) How many more games before he arrives.
2) He hasn’t played an NBA game in almost a year.
3) He needs to get in NBA game shape. There aren’t many practices so it will have to be during games.
4) Donnie Walsh may not buy him out at all. Why would you if you have to pay him anyways? He’s not with the team.
5) Marbury is going to lose leverage as time goes on. When’s the last date you can be bought out or sign with another team?
6) The Celt’s last game with NY is in early Feb. Does Walsh wait until then?
7) I think he’ll be a good fit for 35 games. Marbury will look at it as Starbury against the world. Self Motivation on the short term.
