"Questionable" Bench Leads The Way

Housebench_medium

The first unit started off slowly and fell behind by 10 points.  No worries, the bench came in and took control of the game.  First it was Glen Davis and Tony Allen (welcome back Tony!) mixing it up.  Then Eddie House just started draining 'em.

  • Rondo had a strong night, taking it to the rim relentlessly
  • Some questionable officiating tonight - neither team was happy with the crew
  • Eddie needs to be in the 3 point shooting contest.  "Eddie, Eddie, Eddie"
  • I gotta admit, down 10 in the first had me worried about a "trap" game.  But Tommy had it right.  They were just in a rhythm from playing back to back and we were a little bit cold after some rare days off.
  • Once again, hats off to the bench.  Look at the +/- numbers (after the jump)!

I like when the recap is posted with about 3 minutes to go in the 4th quarter….

Although I ultimately settled with Lost, just watchin on the computer during commercial breaks. I’m gonna have to go back and re-watch the 2nd half

My Man Eddie

There is nothing more fun in the NBA than a gunner in the zone. Better than a dunker.

OK so it was Sacramento. But the team is playing great. Rondo to Garnett is getting better.

If Tony can be head-managed so that this Tony shows up every night we’re good to go deep in playoffs.

I love Eddie!

And that haters have to admit it now….. Big Baby can ball!

lol, good point

all the whipping boys stepped up: Eddie, Tony, Baby

Powe even showed some signs of life

That depends...

on who it is you are “hating” on… And whether you are man enough to admit when a guy had a good game. Funny how we like to go crazy over a good game or two…

Nice play by all the bench except the 3rd stringers of POB and Walker, and Gabe wasn’t that impressive. He better step it up because he is un-doing a lot of good will. Powe actually looked better tonight in spite of some tough misses and some bad calls by the once again bad refs.

by EJPLAYA on Jan 28, 2009 11:06 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, the officiating is usually bad, but tonight was especially bad. Two of Pierce’s first three fouls were total baloney. No wonder he got a T.

by Brickowski on Jan 28, 2009 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

You're only a hater...

If you don’t give credit where credit is due – there are more than just “haters” debating on this board…Glen Davis has skill and is capable of having an impact on a game…i just want consistency before I upgrade his status as a prospect…good game tonight, looked smart in using the threat of a set shot to get to the rim – unlikely that he’ll cover 16 feet on two dribbles against a superior interior defense on a consistent basis, but he took what was there and made good decisions overall….

…especially nice counter, fall-away in the lane…great balance and touch – the best of Big Baby…using a one dribble side-step and step-up shot to avoid closing defenders will give him 3 ranges to attack off the elbow. I’d like to see him take a page out of Walker’s book and use a half-post, hip-bump to knock his defender back to create space for more 8-12 foot fall-aways too. As a finesse player with size, Davis should be looking to utilize both elements in unison more as his confidence grows…it’s early here though, this stuff doesn’t develop overnight. Should be fun to watch down the stretch, especially if the team sticks with its current bigs.

There were some encouraging signs from Powe as well – very stout perimeter defense from him tonight and he took 3 or 4 bull-rush post-ups from the Kings talented frontline and didn’t get moved or pick up cheap fouls – that hand-checking foul call was ludicrous, as was the hack by Hawes on the o-board. Mixed his shots up nicely and got within 6-7 feet of the hoop under control and in position for an easy bucket – missed dunk, uncontested hook, and a nice step-through to beat his primary defender – clearly been reviewing his game with group and taking advantage of PT.

The more we go along through this past 10 games, the more I like the idea of keeping the frontcourt as it is and focusing on finding a veteran PG who is better than Cassell. I think Sam would actually run the offense brilliantly over a sprint-length playoff run, but if the team can upgrade I think it would tie things together.

Pruitt has not been assertive enough with his play-making instincts, settling for too many jumpers. They are good shots, but its not helping anyone else. Transition is his play-making forum right now and I don’t see half court becoming his forte before the season ends.

With Eddie House exploding offensively at almost the identical time Doc chose to tweak the rotation, the bench looks substantially more effective – which was predictable and discussed during the team’s poor play. Moving Eddie off-ball has put him in the shooting zone and he is looking like a major microwave scorer right now – he’s had sustained seasons of this type of play from him, so im optimistic he may have found his groove…

I’d be nice to see Walker get a chance to practice with the Green team and get a crack at earning a spot in the rotation. With Scal playing so well and being able to play the 4/3 though, I think we’re going to see a lot of interesting frontcourt combination’s. It’d be tough for Walker to dislodge any of the frontcourt players at this point.

Good test games coming up. Detroit has pride and San Antonio has been going well. If we get through the upcoming long road trip we’re sailing with home games while Cleveland and LA have road heavy schedules…can get a lot of this accomplished before the trade deadline to, so the current team has great tests before management has to make any decisions.

Great game from Tony Allen as well.

by Brickowski on Jan 28, 2009 10:09 PM EST reply actions

Absolutely!

That might be the best I have seen TA play since he has returned from injury. (At least the first half was) He was in control, had his head up when going to the basket. Passed the ball well. Rebounded, etc. Didn’t love the sloppy 4 turnovers in the second half, but you have to give him some slack due to it being garbage time and him likely being exhausted by then.

I think he was focusing on going out there and not trying to do too much which allowed him to play within himself. We all know he has talent and is a great athlete. Hopefully that is something that Doc reminds him of because if he played like he did in the first half he would really be a big plus.

by EJPLAYA on Jan 28, 2009 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

TA was nice too...

…but he is pretty much the cardinal example of why I don’t get too excited about games like Davis has had recently…as always, i await a point of consistency where he can stay healthy and learn to adapt his game to multiple situations – I know there’s genius inside him, but I no longer believe he has the ability to fully master it – always easier for him when Ray, Eddie, and KG can space the floor for his drives though – good mixes for him as well with a more starter-heavy rotation…

you watch the kings and you see nice young talent they are trying to develop and thank god, danny went past that. it is so clear you need the vets and the hall of famers.

by nazzbo on Jan 28, 2009 11:25 PM EST reply actions

The Kings don’t defend. How can you leave House so unattended? Kevin Martin, among others, is a total matador.

That’s why they don’t win. Youth doesn’t help, but matador defense is the real killer.

by Brickowski on Jan 28, 2009 11:34 PM EST reply actions

A little harsh...

…Martin didn’t fight through screens very hard tonight, but he’s also on a 10-35 team with a completely didfferent agenda than focusing on winning – wasn’t too long ago that Pierce and Ray were not well thought of a complete players…

Kevin Martin is a player i’d like to see on a quality team eventually and I think Sacramento could make a few key moves themselves and become a playoff contender quickly. They’ve got some nice assets and good contracts of various lengths to exchange.

dont necessary have to perform like this every game but about 70% of that level can help much more…

eddie’s been on fire for the last few games but there is no doubt he will cool off a bit eventually … then come on fire dont know when… hopefully in the playoffs

big baby is has been great but cant we see both BB and Powe play well in a game?

and about TA… great hussle but please dont get too confident… stick to what you do best please… less is more

by ssspence on Jan 29, 2009 8:04 AM EST reply actions

it’s wonderful to see Eddie on this roll. He and Baby are playing well and TOny gave them a nice lift in the first half even though his second half wasn’t as good. If the bench plays like this does Danny still need to make a deal? we still need a big man and so far gabe hasn’t proven that he can run the show as a pg. But if you brought marbury in whose minutes does he get? Certainly Gabe’s but that’s not a lot of minutes. with eddie playing the way he is and rondo playing at a high level there’s maybe 10 minutes a night for marbury. It would still give us another weapon for the nights when eddie or rondo aren’t going well plus it might open things up for leon down low. But Danny has to ask himself whether he wants to mess with a good thing. Marbury could prove to be a real distraction and a cancer on a team that is very tight

by Red2 on Jan 29, 2009 8:45 AM EST reply actions

Marbury

After watching the SC interview yesterday, I would feel a little better about him coming to the C’s. I still think the Big Three would keep him in check. He can play the 1 or 2 so I think he could get enough minutes and still allow Eddie and TA to get close to what they are getting now. I think Doc is going to be careful with TA anyways so he will be ready to go for the playoffs. Pruitt just isn’t ready yet. He has had flashes here and there but overall he, along with Walker and O’bryant shouldn’t be in the big plan just yet. Marbury, if his head is on straight, brings scoring, ball movement, and toughness to the bench. This is what we need. Remember that this is a business and the kid can play. Personal feelings can’t be in the equasion. I truely think that if he were to come here, he would be a “good guy”. Marbury, Eddie, TA, Powe, and BBD is a solid, athletic 2nd unit. Add Scal and/or another big if we can find one, and we have a bench to contend with!

by gizmo010101 on Jan 29, 2009 9:37 AM EST up reply actions

Bench Improvement/Marbury

I think 3 factors have alot to do with the improvement of the bench. One is playing Scals, especially against bigger forwards. The second, and maybe the main reason is moving Eddie to his normal position and having him play with Ray or Rondo as the pg and even more of the starters, in other words mixing and matching starters with bench. My hope was for Pruitt to be the 2nd unit pg, but so far that hasn’t worked out. The third is the improved focus on defense from the bench players. With them now using Eddie in a different way, regardless of who the pg is, and the improvement in the bench’s defense I don’t see what Marbury could add to this team.

by TrueGreen on Jan 29, 2009 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

More on Marbry...

I agree with you TruGreen on the defense. I am not pretending that Marbury will be great on defense or make our bench better defensively but…look at the defensive improvements Ray and PP have made in the last year. Marbry isn’y a great defender, but not a bad one.

Scal is (was) playing great but more minutes = more production for most anyone in the league. Look at what TA did when Pierce was out two years ago.

I guess I am looking strictly at production. Marbury is a starting PG in this league. If he is willing to come off the bench and get 20-25 minutes a game, not a person here can say that won’t help us! Again, he will have to show that he is willing to compromise and be a team player for this to work. I am sure he won’t even get a second look if Doc and the Big Three don’t like what they hear from him in their first sit down. Besides, what do we have to lose. We give him the prorated vet min and if he doesn’t work out we buy him out and get rid of him.

I copied this link from the NY Post. Go to the very bottom paragraph and see the interesting quote from Donnie Walsh regarding Marbury going to Miami or Boston. It kind of make me think twice in Marbury’s defense!

Your're Right, Maybe

You say we don’t have anything to lose if we bring on Marbury. But we do. We will lose one of our current players, probably Sam or O’Bryant. Le’ts just talk about Sam and Marbury. First, remember when Sam came last year he never was able to get into the flow of the offensive system and ended up being just a play on your own shooter where he was up and down, mostly down. He was also out of playing shape because he was recovering from an injury. I don’t think that scenario is any different with Marbury or any other pg who could come in. I don’t know if Marbury can learn the system quickly, we are fighting for home court advantage and I don’t think there is time to experiment with him in games. Also, he hasn’t played and isn’t in game-shape. Also we are starting to see the bench problem being worked out by House going more to the two, BBD playing within himself, and the boost that Scals has given us. We are also mixing in more starters with the subs. So we’ll see what happens

by TrueGreen on Jan 29, 2009 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

A Few Notes From Last Nite (Beside The Obvious)

1. Mike Gorman noted that when a Celtic player came out of the game for a sub, the guy coming out was like rooting for the guy coming in and showing it with a hand slap or some personal gesture. When the Kings made a substitution it looked like the players didn’t even know each other.
2. At some point in the game when KG was on the bench, maybe during a timeout, you could see Clifford Ray yelling at him. Then Ray burst out in a huge laugh. Would love to know what was being said. But it just shows how close these guys really are.

by TrueGreen on Jan 29, 2009 10:39 AM EST reply actions

House Tells Secret Or Real Reason The Bench Play Has Improved

In today’s Globe:

“I think the fact that our minutes got cut shorter, we just weren’t playing well as a unit,” House said. "Doc [Rivers] spoke on it and basically said that guys were going to sit next to him if they weren’t making the right plays. So guys wanted to stay on the floor and started making the right plays.

by TrueGreen on Jan 29, 2009 10:40 AM EST reply actions

If you expect the bench to play that well consistently you will be disappointed. Last night was exceptional, and poor defense by the Kings made them look even better. But we should expect sound basketball from the bench on most nights, and that’s what we have been getting.

I don’t see the issue with Powe. He missed a couple of bunnies, but so did Pierce. It happens. But he was where he was supposed to be and hustled on the offensive glass like he always does. Scoring is really secondary to what BBD and Powe do, although they both have to score when the defense neglects them to focus on other players.

by Brickowski on Jan 29, 2009 11:11 AM EST reply actions

Agree

With teams that play better defense our bench will certainly suffer as will the starters, especially in a playoff series. But it also works the other way around too. That’s when it really comes down to which team is the best. During the regular season you need to go with the ups and downs and really enjoy the ups. In the playoffs all external factors are leveled off and you really see who is best. Teams can make minor changes such as last year when LA put Kobe on Rondo which we countered by taking Rondo out and spreading the floor, which made Kobe cover someone. Or you can do more mix and matching, playing starters with subs which seems to be what we are doing more of. The bench problem was recognized early and with a better schedule which allows for more practice time we can develop this approach. A good example of non-familiarity now was when Perk got a rebound under pressure and worked his way to a nice pass to the ref while Pruitt was cutting to the other side. I don’t think this would have happened if Rondo were in.
