No Bailout For Detroit

Piercepistons_medium

Boston vs. Detroit: What did you expect?  A scoring clinic?  It was a good old fashioned grind it out defensive game and the good guys came out on top.

  • Solid game by the starters.  The bench was a bit off.
  • Perk got himself a flagrant 2 and kicked out of the game for a hard foul on Maxiell.  He deserved it.  A lazy foul, probably in frustration.
  • Maxiell did his part to frustrate Perk by playing high energy ball.  5 points and 5 rebounds in just 13 minutes.
  • Hats off to Stuckey too, that kid can play.
  • Why is Amir starting?  5 minutes?  Did I miss an injury?
  • AI passed Barkley in all time scoring.
  • Another day, another double digit assist game by Rondo.  How long have I been waiting for a point guard like this?  A looooong time.  So sweet.
  • 10 straight.  Next up, our old friends the TWolves!

That headline is cold Ranter.

Nice win.

When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"

by Green17 on Jan 30, 2009 9:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Perk?!?!?!

Any fear of suspension…that was a dumb foul by a guy who has been playing very good basketball…

by BuckeyeCelt on Jan 30, 2009 9:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Its a joke if hes suspended just because of the bynum situation last week…not to mention he actually got ejected unlike bynum…maxiell then pushed perk, and punched rondo in the shoulder, where his ejection/suspenion/fine? KG had tiny push in there, what is he gonna get suspended too? that would be a joke

by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 30, 2009 10:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wish I could agree but,

I don’t think Bynum should have been suspended, he was going for the ball. If the Perk play was against the Celts no doubt we would be demanding a suspension. I hope I’m wrong but I think he deserves it. That was uncalled for…

by BuckeyeCelt on Jan 30, 2009 10:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Then Maxiell should be suspended as well.

by NoraG1 on Jan 30, 2009 10:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree...

his response was wrong…

by BuckeyeCelt on Jan 30, 2009 10:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Although I have to say Perk didn’t send anyone to the hospital.

by NoraG1 on Jan 30, 2009 10:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True, but

there is NO WAY that his headlock could be misconstrued for a legit basketball play either…

by BuckeyeCelt on Jan 30, 2009 10:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bynum went for the ball? um no he didnt…even the homer LA announcers testiffied to that

by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 30, 2009 10:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

but...

posting in game thread stated i’m nostalgic for days when the game was handled by the players not the refs. i have no problem with a flagrent on perk. don’t even think he should have been ejected let alone did that warrant a suspension. let the players sort it out within reason. just hate the refs being responsible for what was once policed on the court. the fear of escalation has made the lack of tolerance for hard fouls a joke. part of the game is intimidation, clean or not. if it had been a detroit player i would say the same thing. has to do with the association not the jersey. oh well. unfortunate for the league.

by ChainSmokingLikeDino on Jan 30, 2009 10:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bynum definitely did not go for the ball. I thought what he did was on a par with what Williams did to Rondo last year in the playoffs. As for Perk, he got what he deserved tonight.

by Berkcelt on Jan 30, 2009 11:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wish I could agree as well

No chance Bynum was going for the ball. I guess it’s just in the eye of beholder.

by Brickowski on Jan 30, 2009 9:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Perk's Flagrant 2

Yes it was a flagrant and he should have been ejected, but how do you miss a two hand push in the back of Eddie House. And Ray strips Stuckey clean and the official behind the paly, who can’t see anything, calls the foul shile the two that can see the play clearly think it’s clean. There’s just some things in the NBA that I’ll never figure out.

by joeb on Jan 30, 2009 9:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I thought the same thing

If they would have called the push in the back on maxiel (against eddie) none of that would have happened.

by BuckeyeCelt on Jan 30, 2009 10:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i wasn’t paying attention when did maxiell push eddie?

by twinbree on Jan 30, 2009 10:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

just...

prior to grabbing that board. if he never pushes eddie he doesn’t grab the rebound with that position. he pushed house out of the way to clear space.

as i said above i miss the days of the nba when thatt was part of the game and everything wasn’t seen as inciting a riot. let the players have some leeway to police themselves.

by twinbree on Jan 30, 2009 10:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Pistons played better and harder then they did all year, and never led while we had some questionable lineups…eddie/ta/leon/bbd/pierce was so wrong…
Powe made me cringe, he was so awful

by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 30, 2009 10:01 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

The officiating was terrible, which is one reason why the game was so ugly.

But I like Maxiell. He’s a throwback and plays the right way. I wish the Celtics had him, and I’m really glad the Lakers don’t, because he’s exactly the kind of player they need.

by Brickowski on Jan 30, 2009 10:02 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ick, I happen to despise Maxiell and think hes really overrated…I mean I think he had 5 rebounds total in the ecf

Agree about Maxiell, Brick

Manuel Aristides Ramirez is the greatest hitter I've ever seen.

by Steve Weinman on Jan 30, 2009 11:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

why?

He gets all this credit for bringing it every night, and doesnt, very poor rebounder and seems to have regressed this season and was terrible in the ecf..and why would you wish the celtics have him? they kinda already have 2 guys just like him, but are just flat out better guys for cheaper I assume…I also dont see why the lakers would need him? there roster is loaded and they got rid of turiaf who again, is very similar to maxiell..they dont need as guy like him

by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 30, 2009 11:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

A win is a win...

but that was a little ugly. They made it tough on us offensively. Credit them. That was their only chance was to try and grind themselves into the game. Our second unit especially struggled. However, we won.

Stupid play by Perk. He deserved to get tossed and deserves a fine but not a suspension IMO. He has to be smarter than that up 5.

I can’t believe Rondo missed that wide open layup that would have really sealed it there. He misses an unbelievable amount of layups. I think the easier the shot is the harder it is for him to make.

Agree with the bad officiating. We have to play the other squad and the refs most nights…

by EJPLAYA on Jan 30, 2009 10:06 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Dumb play by perk, but couldve been worse in my eyes..he couldve retaliated more after maxiell got up, pushed punched and acted like a tough guy

Winning Streak ....

If the Celtics win the next two games, that will bring their winning streak to 12. Then the Lakers come to town. Will the Fakers be the ones to break the winning streak once again?

I hope that the Celtics are still on a roll next week … and NOT due for a bad game!!!!!

I’m getting nervous about the game with the Fakers …

by TheGreenThumb on Jan 30, 2009 10:21 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I sincerely believe our guys will bring their A games for the Lakers. I think the Christmas loss rankles a bit and our vets know how to get up for a game like this.

by Thruthelookingglass on Jan 30, 2009 10:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bringing the streak into the LA game worries me too…I dont want another streak snapped by the fakers, and a streak just gives them more motivation a bigger targer on our backs

remember game 6?

Could be a repeat next week. No way will LA win… Cs are playing at a very high level now… and if either Ray or Eddie is hot, well… it won’t even be close.

by DRJ1 on Jan 30, 2009 11:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I have confidence that the Celtics beat the Lakers. Celtics are the better team and are playing much better then last time they played the Fakers

by NoraG1 on Jan 30, 2009 10:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think the celtics are the better team as well…but If lakers sneak out a win or whatever, I dont think Ill be able to take delusional lakers fans heads growing even bigger

Yeah, I am also confident we will win next Thursday. Hopefully we can blow them out the same as Phoenix, Dallas and Game 6 of the Finals last June…

The game in Philly on Tuesday might actually be the toughest game next week, they are playing very well and have Elton Brand back.

by Ruben Wolkowyski on Jan 31, 2009 3:48 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The second unit is back to its old tricks. Playing against a team with decent defense, Eddie plays point, and the movement of the ball stops. Eddie’s got to play the two.

Perk deserved to be tossed, though the refs missed the push in the back on Eddie who had position.

by Jeff Clark on Jan 30, 2009 10:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not really

The refs were letting both teams play very physical and Detroit brought a lot of effort defensively after the first quarter. They pressured the ball and forced turnovers. Solid defense is going to cause poor offensive nights for our bench even with Pruitt in there.

Plus lately he’s been so foul prone I worry whether he could avoid 3 quick ones one any of the three potential matchups (AI/Stuckey/Rip)

by Fafnir on Jan 31, 2009 2:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Didn’t the second unit demolish Detroit in the two previous meetings behind a pair of great Tony Allen performances?

by Who on Jan 30, 2009 11:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The problem with that argument is that we could then say the second unit played well the first month, so therefore there is no need to change things. My point to the earlier post was that the second unit began playing a more fluid game when TA went down. Last night, and albeit, it was one game, but the second unit with Eddie playing the one struggled, and went more one on one. If it continues, then I think something has to be done. It doesn’t mean that Gabe is a savior, but only that we need someone to play point so Eddie and TA can play their better positions.

by amenhotep04 on Jan 31, 2009 1:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm sorry, but...

I really have to question some of the posters here and just how acutely aware they are of what’s going on beyond who’s on the court…TA certainly didn’t play outstanding bball, but there were some other factors going on:

- Detroit’s perimeter defense was focused on eliminating easy 3 point attempts
- House brought the ball up sometimes, but wasn’t the principle ball-handler in the half court
- Boston didn’t utilize its bigs on offense – starters or bench – outside of KG’s perimeter game

Perkins has been extremely effective when posting up against this team, while Davis and Powe have both been good in pick-and-roll and cuts off penetration. Boston relied almost exclusively on Pierce ISO and simplistic P&R beyond the 3point line – rarely swinging the ball to the weakside or using pass-triangulation to take advantage of over-pursuant defenders coming over the top of their man.

Boston just didn’t play a crisp offensive game, its a simple as that…while TA has looked better than last night, making him the sole bearer of burden for the poor bench play is patently unfair and ignores other elements of the game that came into play.

On a side note, i’d like to point out that ALL of Boston’s big men played stallwart defense – continually switching onto wing and recovering to their man without much fault last night – Detroit got almost no easy looks at the basket and very few free shots, with the exception of Iverson having a decent game and Stuckey hitting some nice pull-ups off the dribble while defended.

Maxiell had a “flash” five minute impact, but most everything was shut down inside. Perkins was as solid as he always is defensively, and had two very nice quick-hitting finishes that displayed his excellent hands and much improved ability to use length and finesse on the finish instead of wind-up power.

Davis and Powe both did good work on the glass, grabbing some tough rebounds in traffic and limiting Detroit’s 2nd chance ops. Davis’ key o-board being perhaps the turn-key moment in the game as it set up House’s 3 ball. Powe had an excellent night defensively, at one point shutting down a Rip Hamilton ISO drive and forcing the kick out – if it wasn’t for his two “Magic Johnson” moments where he inexplicably decided to pass instead of finish in front of the basket, he’d have had a solid overall game…still, i’d rather have him thinking about passing more, and the assist to TA was a very good read, despite getting too happy about it and forcing the next two.

KG was awesome with the jumper and with his containment of Sheed. Ray missed some layups and didn’t get many clean looks from distance, but he didn’t force the issue too much and allowed Pierce and KG to take advantage of their matchups…

People need to chill out on the whole – winning ugly is sometimes as valuable as winning pretty – it shows a team can buckle down, focus defensively, and grind a game out…

by BillfromBoston on Jan 31, 2009 2:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It’s not TA. My posts have to do with how players are being used. Winning ugly is fine. Guys having good or bad games happens. That’s not the point. Nor is whether or not players played good or bad defense. The goal is to maximize the potential of the players. If the second unit does not play team ball, offensively and defensively, then it’s up to Doc to make changes. It’s pretty simple.

by amenhotep04 on Jan 31, 2009 6:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Its ONE game dude...

…and there have been NUMEROUS changes to the rotation since TA went out…pointing to one game as proof-positive of something is foolish – which is why good coaches and GM’s wait for longer term trends to develop before making decisions on things…

There will probably be alot of hype about another big game from bynum…too bad he gave up 34/13 to big Al…2 ends of the court big fella

by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 30, 2009 10:43 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

ugly game- yes, but i really liked it. very physical. perk was using his tuckus all nite and sheed was using his elbows. hamilton is one dirty player- just watch him almost every play he has a push or a scratch- and if anything gets done to perk- hamilton did a deliberate face job. what has happened to powe? he looks horrible with the ball and seems to not have a clue. stuckey is really good. the key play in the 4th was to take out tony, moving eddie to the 2—bingo- a righteous 3. kg was the consumate all pro as was pp. ray not his best but don’t underestimate his all around game today.

Everyone remember when bynum had that hard foul on wallace and ESPN refused to show that re-play? well I just saw the highlights of the bos/det game…and the main highlight was perks foul…hmmm coincidence? then mashburn says “I like how maxiell got up and shows what hes made of” um, Jamal, buddy, he threw a punch at rondo and shoved perk…UGH

Alot of sad networks who will be sure to pick against the Celtics and look like fools.

by NoraG1 on Jan 30, 2009 10:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Actually, a great game because...

… refs were blowing almost everything against us (no foul shots for KG when he’s hit DURING HIS DUNK attempt, foul on Ray when all he hit was the ball, and many others), we got very little from the bench, almost no 3-pointers from either Ray or Eddie, Perk gets thrown out… and despite all that, we still win. At this point, I’m ready to say that only the refs can beat us… and they will continue to try, unfortunately… but the team is playing GREAT BALL!

Re the 2: Maxiell fouled Eddie, Perk fouled Maxiell, Maxiell then fouled Perk and Rondo, KG sorta pushed Maxiell (but more to slow him down), then Maxiell sort of exploded into smithereens. The 2 was proper. Perk was thrown out. Justice was served. Enough.

And I LIKE IT that the Cs are getting no respect from the morons on tv, or the league. Lights their fire, just like last year.

by DRJ1 on Jan 30, 2009 11:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

The only complaint I have about this game is that we have to play the Pistons again this year. Geez they’re annoying.

Also, if Perk gets suspended via league conspiracy, we’re going to need all our guys, but after that can we re-remove TA from the lineup? I think I prefer Gabe’s consistent mediocrity to bad TA.

by illantari on Jan 30, 2009 11:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Bench had a bad night...

… but they’ll get it together for Sunday. TA is always worrisome. Gabe doesn’t make TA’s stupid mistakes… plus has occasional flashes of brilliance.

"I think I prefer Gabe’s consistent mediocrity to bad TA"

Very well said…and I cant take Eddie at the point or tony thinking he can bring it up…wow we actually miss scal as well, not because hes great, but just him sitting out at the 3 pt line is better than BBD/Leon clogging the paint at the same time

by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 30, 2009 11:23 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Bench had a what now?

First, I agree with the first poster. Great headline.

Second, after wating the replay shown on NBA dot com, I think Perk should be suspended for a game. Oh, well. I couldn’t get a good look at the retaliation, so I’ve no opinion to state on that. It didn’t look cool, but I haven’t seen anything over the line…

Lastly, I would sure appreciate knowing what anyone here thinks about how the C’s responded after Perkins left. Who filled in? This is going to be, possibly, of course, but hopefully not much, a key point “going forward” as they say. Effective bench play? Some say not, I see…

Did the other four of the starting five just take care of all the damn business through ’till the end? Thanks…

Watch the ESPN highlights

They outline Big Baby’s presence in the 4th Quarter after Perk was ejected. He made a couple of big plays which was great.

There is also a very cool Survey on the ESPN website which asks “Who was the biggest All-Star snub in the Western Conference” and then they show the results for each state. The results seem to show people vote for best player on their hometown team :)

by Ruben Wolkowyski on Jan 31, 2009 4:15 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Our defense was consistently good throughout. After the foul, our offense settled down and they found (and hit) good shots, Rondo’s botched layup not withstanding. As I recall, there were a couple important rebounds too.

by Thruthelookingglass on Jan 31, 2009 8:14 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

On another note...

I’d like to point out (in the midst of all this Laker talk), that the Cavs just got much better with the return of Big Z. His time out also allowed Varejao to get more comfortable with his offensive game. When Delonte gets back, ooh boy. That’s one quality team out there and yes, I am scared and not afraid to admit it. We cannot brush off the East. The Cavs and Magic are legit, and will be until the season’s over.

by Slick on Jan 31, 2009 3:02 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

The cavs are legit, the magic are pretenders….and also the cavs didnt really play much better then they had been with Big z…we’re talking about the lakers because a re-match of Xmas day is very close, not because we’re brushing off cleveland

by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 31, 2009 9:47 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Cavs I am most scared of all the teams. Orlando? Celtics have handled them pretty well. Best case scenario Cavs and Magic meet in the playoffs. East is better then the West this year that is for sure.

by NoraG1 on Jan 31, 2009 3:07 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree, but the funny thing is Orlando blew out Cleveland on Thursday night. They were up by 25 in the 4th quarter apparently (but only won by 10 or so).

The rematch with Cleveland ay Boston will be interesting, but we have to wait until March. Then there’s another game in Cleveland in April to prepare for the playoffs…

by Ruben Wolkowyski on Jan 31, 2009 3:59 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Cleveland was

without 2 starters when Orlando beat them. I don’t think Orlando beats Boston or Cleveland in a 7 game series.

"Hats off to stuckey, that kid can play"

While I agree with this the kid can play…but not point guard, he is not a good point guard right now in my eyes, and this is a reason for the pistons struggles…they have no point guard..3 shooting guard scorers playing starter type minutes…maybe he’ll develop into one, but right now hes just a good scorer/slasher, not point guard

by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 31, 2009 10:53 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

We are better, bring on anyone

The Rondo-KG connection is getting to be one of my favorite parts of the game. They are zoned. Our passing is overall better this year (at least during the streaks).
Tony has had two good games back. Glad tosee that.
Only player who is worse is Leon. Coaches are handling right. His mins are down but he’s not in the doghouse. He does look bad on both ends. Hard to tell why. But Big Baby and Scal have picked up the slack.
KG to Rondo to Eddie in the 4th Q was great play. Just as I was yelling at Rondo for not shoooting, Eddie “eddies” it. We are better. i can’t wait for the Lakers . I too see Philly as the trap game
