Acceptance of the status quo.
The Celtics have lost three of their last five games and so that means that there are currently about a million Danny Ainge wannabes currently trying to think of every and anyway possible to improve this team. Trade proposals, benchings, promotions of end of the bench players to rotation guys, rotation shuffles, player releases, coaching changes and free agent signings have all been thought of and some have been discussed ad nauseum. But the real question is, what really does need to be done and what really will be done?
Could this be nothing more than a case of deja vu all over again? Should we expect pretty much what we got last year, which was nothing in the way of trades, nothing in the way of coaching changes, a shuffling of the bench players minutes but no real substitution changes, and if the team can get lucky, a signing or two of a free agent, whether they be just released, just bought out or recuperating from injury for the last 6-8 months?
Should we as Boston Celtics fans just learn to accept the staus quo, that this is our Boston Celtics team for the 2008-2009 regular season and that for the most part, these are the guys that are going to have to get us the home court advantage we need and the title we want? Because as much as Sam ans PJ came aboard late last year and helped a bit in the playoffs, they gave us next to nothing in the regular season. Should we just learn to be patient and accept that there's nothing major on the horizon and that the real Danny Ainge is extremely satisfied with this team?
I, for one, think so. The obstacles currently facing this team to make major changes are too large to overcome, IMO. Ainge has very little desirable tradeable commodities. Players who could make a difference make too much for him to match salaries with without giving up a starter. Many of the available free agents are signing elsewhere, retiring, or just not better than what we currently have on the roster. The end of the bench is just plain and simple not better than the 6 through 9 guys in the rotation. Doc is a creature of habit and isn't about to change his rotations and substtution patterns and his job security is about as good as it gets for an NBA coach not named Popovich, Sloan or Phil Jackson. And considering that the only significant bought out veteran option out there is Antoine Walker and we all know he isn't Danny's favorite type of player, I guess we'll just have to deal with the fact that what we see is what we get.
And it could very well stay that way. Joe Smith and Stephon Marbury being bought out and hitting the open market and then signing with the Celtics are no guarantees. Apparently, OKC wants to trade Joe Smith and not buy him out and if he is bought out Smith has already discussed his interest in returning to Cleveland, so that may be a long shot. Marbury is stuck in New York until one side or the other decides to blink in their staring contest that is his buyout negotiations. It may very wellcome to pass that neither side does blink and Marbury has played his last NBA game for a long time to come. I haven't heard the Celtics have interest in anyone else except possibly Alonzo Mourning and we don't even know if he'd be willing to leave Miami or will even be able to return from his injuries.
So learn to accept that what we have could possibly be all we ever have this year and that the players currently on the roster are just going to have to be good enough to win it all because they may be all we see in a Celtic uniform this year.
Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

We didn't win it all with the bench we had at the same time last season
We added Cassell and PJ Brown down the stretch.
Besides, you don’t know that we can’t win it all with this bench.

I'm sorry...
but did I say that we couldn’t win it all with the bench constructed as it currently is? If you read it that way then I apologize for making it sound that way. I think team could win it all as it currently is. But the starters will be the reason why and not the bench, IMO.
And I acknowledged we picked up Cassell and Brown and that they helped in the playoffs. I just feel we would have had a 66-16 regular season record whether they came aboard or not. Things could change with this bench and things might become easy to accomplish if the bench is tweaked a bit. But we definitely could win it all just like we are, it’s just the starters will really need to play big minutes come playoff time if we are to repeat with the bench staying the way it is.
Either way we’re good. The jist of the article was to say that we may need to be happy with the team like it is because there’s a more than good chance that the team that’s playing now could be the team that enters the playoff ready to defend the title. That’s all.

I agree, I think the C’s can win with this bench.

Nah. There’s no way on Earth we repeat with this bench. There’s nothing there beyond Leon Powe.

You, and anyone else who makes this statement, knows that it is not true.
You can say that our chances are low compared to the chances we had last year. You can say that we need a couple of additions to solidify our spot atop the Eastern Conference. But, as the team with the best record in the East, to say that we have zero chance, is simply not true. It is very possible that if we made no changes to our roster, we could win it all. Not all championship teams have to be runaway favorites who always play dominant basketball.
I think if you just admitted that there is in fact a way we could repeat with what we have, and stay away from hyperbole, it would clear up a lot of confusion and prevent a ton of unnecessary arguments.

I think the team needs another wing player. An option outside of Tony Allen, especially since he’s inconsistent and prone to bad games. Preferably a long tall wing.
I don’t think it’s a priority to sign someone capable of replacing TA, but to sign someone capable of complementing TA.

I don’t know, Who. The Celtics already have three guys, Tony Allen, JR Giddens, and Bill Walker who are all pretty close to being the same player. I can’t see Ainge bringing in another guy.
My idea of complementing Tony Allen would be to replace House with Pruitt at the point. That might help settle Allen down some.

Nick
I’m in the same boat as you with the “we have what we have” scenario right now. The L’s right now are coming because everyone on the team needs to pull there heads out of there rear ends (excluding Powe, Pierce, and Allen). I thought the beginning of the season up until the LA game we played beautifully as a team. Tony was consistent, the bench was on fire, and the starters were mowing down all oppositions, but now we’re a frantic mess. If I was Doc I would start tossing POB in for a few quality minutes with the starters, say midway of 1st? See what results we get from that so in the future we know what we can use him for, same goes for Gabe. Posey is gone, I doubt Marbury’s coming, PJ’s retired, Cassell isnt the answer (or is he?), and J.Smith is a who knows. We are still the best team in this league and we can still repeat if we WAKE UP.
